British detectives have expressed dismay over flaws in the Portuguese police’s investigation, in which dozens of people were allowed to trample over the crime scene and evidence was found to be contaminated with cigarette ash. Files relating to the case also disclosed that several other holidaymakers stayed in the flat from which Madeleine disappeared while it was still designated as a crime scene.

Kate McCann said doors were banging shut do to the draught, friends, police were in the apartment searching for Madeleine she was screaming uncontrollably there must have been a right furore going on yet........amongst all this noise, screaming and undoubted panic......the McCann twins slept right through it all, even staying asleep when they were carried to another room.
I've got four children and that would require a miracle in normal circumstances.
What, in hindsight, should have happened is that they, the McCanns, should have been made suspects on the spot then the twins could have been taken away to be examined to see if they'd been administered drugs so they'd sleep that would have stopped the McCanns having the right to refuse the checks being made on them.
The Portuguese were probably far too sympathetic towards them and the 'heat' only came when they were implicated by the British police.

@Ayersrock that's not a source that's a Clarence Mitchell press release

lol, everything is about clarence mitchell, the broadsheets take his word as gospel and do not investigating whatsoever - just like earlier someone said clarence mitchell orchestrated the greeks to put out a press confrence to find the parents of the girl kidnapped by the roma gang - just to keep up the abduction theory on madeline mccan,

also, the lack of abduction evidence might also be because the Portuguese were worried about Tourism revenues which was no doubt hit in the aftermath - this debt ridden country rely heavily on tourism with the algarve being the biggest attraction - who wants to have that area associated with child kidnappers

The financial crisis came in 2008, the supposed abduction happened in 2007.
I agree they wouldn't want to be associated with child abductions when there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever to support it though.
It's like someone calling AyersRock a paedophile and that person calling you that terrible thing having great sway with the media/press, everyone should see you're innocent it's surely obvious there's nothing to connect you with being a paedo, not one shred of evidence, yet the press keeps saying the same thing it's not very fair, you're even on television being called that yet where is the evidence?

lol, everything is about clarence mitchell, the broadsheets take his word as gospel and do not investigating whatsoever

So there's no source other than newspaper ramblings

There's been no investigative journalism into this case whatsoever. No UK media even mentioned that the all important Smithman was identified with 60-80% certainty as Mr McCann.

Has Gerry been arrested yet?

when there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever to support it though.

and why is this? is it because there was none? or is it because certain figures concealed?

You are saying one one hand that the Joe public shouldnt believe everything they are fed - but at the same time you are doing the same thing by taking the Portuguese police word on absolutely everything, its double standards

The British police said there was no evidence of abduction, the only two sightings of a potential abductor were the McCanns friend Jane Tanner which the Portuguese managed to quickly state was incorrect, the McCanns detective agency focused on this red herring for over 6 years though and strangely, after all this time, the British police say now that the supposed faceless man described by Tanner is not a suspect.
So we are left with the one remaining sighting of a potential abductor but for 6 years the detective agency and the British police have totally ignored this potential abductor witnessed by Martin Smith and his wife and the e-fit was only released in the last week, why? Because that person was named with a 60-80% certainty? This sighting is all the McCann team team can cling to as far as abduction goes now so they are running with it but still the story of the original sighting and the e-fit is being kept from the publuc, why?

If she was abducted , the depressing thing is that it was probably her constantly crying for mummy that alerted the paedo to the fact that she was there in the first place , and the fact that mummy (or daddy) were nowhere around

Their absolute stupidity helped an abductor no end (if she was abducted)

it simply sounds like they are doing just that, clinging to anything to keep the story going to keep her memory fresh whether they believe the previously so called un-important efit is actually now news worthy or not - there is no  tangible evidence of an abduction yes, but you still have to keep an open mind as to why they may not be, insiders with the Portuguese establishment could have either contaminated/destroyed or ignored evidence, like I keep saying - read up on stories about the many high profile figures involved in paedophilia scandals

Leaving their kids home alone was negligence of the highest order and they deserve criticism but the constant "they accidentally killed her, buried her, and staged a false abduction" claim, is based on too many 2+2 equalling 5 scenarios, "they are in the medicine profession, they know about drugs, they sedated her too heavily (which is a contradiction in itself)", "gerrys not her real dad, he didnt want her", "the endless questions they didnt want to answer" (never mind the fact they were under orders to not talk about specific things from the portguese police), "the dna in the flat" (kids never cut themselves do they?)

It seems to me, a lot of people have grown resentment of them because of the fact they left their kids, they've had soo much time effort and millions spent on the search etc.

Much of that has been spent on perpetuating the myth, spin etc, and also defending their actions, or lack of. And not looking for the "abductor"

Ayres Rock if there are only two possible scenarios to who was responsible and there is absolutely no evidence towards an abduction don't you think its reasonable to look at the possibility that at least one of the parents was responsible in some way or another. Of course six years on the prospect of finding evidence against them is very small. A blood test on the other children was the main thing that should have been carried out. Its hard to treat parents as suspects from an early stage as the focus must be on believing the child is alive and all efforts made to find her. But most parents who have seen their child really abducted would not care about being suspects as they would see it as a necessary part of police investigations and the last person to see someone who is killed or abducted is the first person who always needs to be looked at so they can be at least ruled out.
By:

Having the McCanns ruled out of any involvement as soon as possible would be in their interests, not because there might always be suspicion but because they would know it mean the police could then focus 100% of their resources on other possibilities. They hindered the investigation in lots of ways and you have to ask why.

Just going back to AyersRock saying Portuguese police could have deliberately destroyed/trampled over evidence

British and Portuguese police say Madeleine’s friends and family may have unwittingly destroyed vital evidence in the first few hours after her presumed abduction during their search for her and are concerned as to why the press were called and informed before the Portuguese Police.

It's all premeditated really isn't it?
Don't call the police instead ring the press/Sky News to say a British child has been abducted in Portugal so the immediate news release is about an abduction and that sows the first seed in peoples minds.

I think this 4 year old found in the Gypsy camp has given the mccanns fresh hope. Like everybody else I don't know what happened to Madeleine.
Accidental death and covered up by one or both of the parents? Who knows? Plausible but it would need to be only Gerry who knew as Kate imo looks drained and if guilty would surely have confessed by now.
Abducted? Seems the more likely scenario but again who knows and if she was lets hope it was for someone looking for a ready made family as the other option doesn't bear thinking off.
What is certain though is that the mccanns have done themselves no favours with their conduct ever since this story broke. Gerry in particular has treated interviewers and journalists with contempt whenever he's been asked 'difficult' questions.

This would have been fair enough given the circumstances and the McCanns could easily have answered questions from the public without fear of 'set up' or being prosecuted.

As you may or may not be aware, the chief public relations officer for the McCanns, Mr Clarence Mitchell, was interviewed on Radio Humberside on 6 January this year (2011) and told its listeners that the McCanns' claim that Madeleine was abducted was, and we quote: 'only an assumption' or 'a working hypothesis' - 'and not, therefore, a fact.'

In view of the many questions in the public's mind about what really happened to Madeleine, we have made a list of some of the most commonly-asked questions relating to Madeleine's disappearance, thus giving the McCanns, and yourselves as publishers, an opportunity to set the record straight, for example in respect of the many contradictions that have arisen amongst the statements made by the McCanns and their friends. Should their book provide convincing answers to these questions, this will put an end to the debate about what happened to Madeleine.

The McCanns have frequently claimed that this debate about what happened to Madeleine is 'hindering the search for Madeleine'. One of the main reasons for this ongoing debate is that there are still so many unanswered questions about the case. It would therefore be in the McCanns' own interests and of course Madeleine's interest (if she is still alive) if the McCanns could clear up as many of these questions as possible.

As you know, the whole world has been asked to donate towards the search for Madeleine and to look for Madeleine without them even knowing and no evidence backing if she had indeed been abducted. Many people feel that the McCanns owe it to the public, whom they have so frequently asked for help, to give them reasonable answers to their questions.

You have to ask yourself though what is more likelly........

Was Mr Smith mistaken in thinking the person he saw was Gerry (he was only 60% sure)? There are at least 7 witnesses that place Gerry Mccann in the tapas bar at 10pm when this sighting took place.........is it more likely that 7 people are lying (and why would they) than Mr Smith being mistaken??? I dont think so.

Also, when the Mccann freind went to check the kids at 9-30pm, did he actually see Maddy? Did anyone else see her after 7pm?

Don't call the police instead ring the press/Sky News to say a British child has been abducted in Portugal so the immediate news release is about an abduction and that sows the first seed in peoples minds.

At around 22:10 Gerry sent Matthew Oldfield to alert the resort's 24-hour reception desk and to call the police, and at 22:30 the resort activated its missing-child search protocol.[40] The resort's manager said that 60 staff and guests searched until 04:30, at first assuming that Madeleine had wandered off. One of those involved told Channel 4's Dispatches that from one end of Luz to the other, you could hear people shouting her name.

Friends of the McCanns' friends contacted the media in the UK, and by early morning they were carrying the news. Gerry's sister in Scotland alerted the British Consulate in the Algarve, the British Embassy in Lisbon and the Foreign Office in London.[44] Roadblocks were put in place at 10 am. Interpol issued a global alert known as a yellow notice five days later.[46] The police later

so first thing he did was get one of his friends to get the reception to call police, what another friend does quicker is not his doing, it wasnt him that called the media

the slowness in outting out roadblocks is more concerning as is....

Chief Inspector Olegário de Sousa of the Polícia Judiciária, who worked on the case, said that around 20 people had entered the apartment before it was closed off.[48] Madeleine's toy, Cuddle Cat, was not secured or checked early on for DNA.[49] Neither border nor marine police were given descriptions of Madeleine for many hours, and officers did not appear to make extensive door-to-door inquiries.[50] They also failed to request surveillance pictures of vehicles leaving Praia da Luz that night, or of the road between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António on the Spanish border.

Like the "60-80% it's Gerry" issue lots is kept out of the UK press - whether this is voluntary or there is a super-injunction who knows. Recall when the Prosecutor's report was published there was much that was not favourable to the McCanns but none of it made the UK media.

I find it very odd that other people outside the family in the tapas group would be asked and would go to the bedroom children. How well did the McCanns know these other people. I am not saying any of the tapas group were involved but them even going into the childrens bedroom is not right. Its something which should not happen yet the McCanns were happy with this and more surprisingly the other adults felt comfortable walking into the bedroom of other children.

Ayers your very critical of the portuguese police. As I said a few pages back they acted very similar to how the British police would act in such circumstances. There was no evidence of an abduction that was seen by the police or the McCanns that there was a break in or an abduction. What evidence are you saying the police were traipsing all over?
