I'm not sure why you think the Portuguese police are so incompetent Ayers when the UK police have made just as much progress.
Amaral and his colleagues face countless unanswered questions about mistakes in the original police investigation into Maddie's disappearance, such as failing to ensure the McCanns' apartment was sealed off for forensics. (This did not happen until the next day, by which time the McCanns, their friends, resort staff and detectives had traipsed through, destroying potentially vital evidence.) They also failed to seal off the Mark Warner Ocean Club resort. No roadblocks were set up and police on the Spanish border - two hours' drive away - were not alerted for 12 hours. Staff were only quizzed 60 hours later. And the CCTV footage from a busy main road was never studied. The list of mistakes goes on. well the Portuguese didn't exactly lay a smooth path leaving the British police with an easier task to pick up on anything they may have missed or to provide extra backup - the early stages are crucial and the the Portuguese police incompetence in dealing with simple basic procedures was a joke, the Brits not being able to get to the bottom of it is a direct consequence of the ineptitude of the decisions made by the criminal agencies over there in the original investigations. Not saying British police are perfect or honest but in this instance, the incompetence of the Portuguese means threads like this still exist 6 years on |

So they have left the all alone Mrs McCann but removed the important bit..
Mucky and murky.. |

the portugese translation on screen puts it differently and you dont see him storming out there, reminds of when the bbc showed the queen aparently storming out of a room in buckingham palace, they later admitted she was actually walking into the correct room
it says he is upset/worreid give him a minute, hes going to get some air |

I don't find it surprising that the apartment block wasn't sealed off straight away given the little evidence that any crime had actually taken place initially. If you phoned the police in the UK and said to them my 3 year old year old is missing, I left her sleeping with the door unlocked whilst I was over at the neighbours and when they arrived your other two kids were lying sound a sleep I would be surprised if their first reaction was to lock down your house, prevent anyone from going in and for them to just stand outside waiting for the forensic science team to arrive.
Alternatively I would expect people to be traipsing through looking for the child, to get photos and such like for identification and to look after the other children as without any indication of a crime the apartment at that stage wouldn't have been considered a crime scene. Again with almost no evidence of a crime having taken place other than a child having gone missing from an unlocked unsupervised room I wouldn't expect one of the first things for the police to do be to contact the borders and set up roadblocks. They may have been slower than they should have but the idea that the first thing the police should have been doing in such a situation is locking down the apartment, putting up roadblocks and sending details to border controls only really comes about with hindsight given there was no evidence to suggest a crime had taken place and in all likelihood a 3 year old had left an unsupervised unlocked room and wandered off. |

and comes from minds that have watched too much television. The Portuguese police did a perfectly good job. And the McCanns have no right to criticise when it was their refusal to come back for a reconstruction that ended the case. The Mccann's agenda has always been to promote the idea of an abduction - not too find out what happened to Madeleine. Two potentially different things. Let's remind ourselves that there is now only one piece of evidence that indicates abduction: the man carrying a child sighted by the Smith family. And Martin Smith himself said he was 60-80% sure it was Gerry McCann. |
|
By:
is that true that he claimed he was 60-80% sure it was him?
|
|
By:
Oh yes it's very true. Strangely not mentioned by a single UK news outlet during this week's coverage.
|
|
By:
when did he come forward with this?was it early in the investigation or much later
|
|
By:
even now a recording of that call was shown, with no mention of the claim.
|
|
By:
I'm not saying it was Gerry - but the fact this detail is always redacted in the UK media is indicative of how this story is managed and fed to the British public.

whitewash, must be an injunction its so complete

3 weeks later he gavve witness statement and then later after seeing GErry walking down from an easyjet plane carrying another of his kids something click in his head and he phone police again with the 60-80% statement, credible witness ex unilever exec apparently. But uk media say old man in seventies without his glass. Its unbelievable the spin that goes on |

By:
What motive to be involved would any of the parents have? Im struggling!
|
|
By:
|
|
By:
Because a parent has never killed one of their children before?
Again I'm not saying they have but the fact is most people don't kill children and most parents don't kill their children and people would find it hard to rationalise a particular motive for either but don't pretend it's never happened before. |

By:
what if the portuguese were on the right lines when they asked the question about them saying they wanted to give madeline to a relative to bring up?

For whatever reason, the Uk media are very selective about what they report on this case - I don't remember reading about this
http://www.mccannfiles.com/id33.html Saturday 01 December 2007 212 It is revealed that Portuguese police are investigating a mobile phone call from Russell O'Brien to Gerry McCann that was made on 10 June 2007. A team of telephone surveillance officers highlighted the call as it is understood to have contained key words that aroused police suspicions. Investigators are concentrating on the exact whereabouts of Dr O'Brien when the call was made. It is understood Gerry McCann told detectives the call was made within a 4km radius of Praia da Luz but technicians working on the mobile phone network have dismissed this after examining records. It is believed the call took place 28km from Praia da Luz. It also emerged that each member of the Tapas Nine were placed under surveillance after British communications experts arrived in the resort at the end of May. Mobile phone records, which leave a trail even when switched off, are believed to have been checked against statements made by guests and staff at the Ocean Club complex. The results of these tests are believed to have been handed to the Portuguese prosecutors last week. There is further press speculation about the 'Exeter connection', based around the fact that, just prior to May 3rd, Robert Murat spent 10 days at his sister's home in Exeter. Her house is less than a mile from the house where Jane Tanner and Russell O'Brien live. Tanner and O'Brien are neighbours of James and Charlotte Gorrod, who were also in Praia da Luz, at the same time as the Tapas Nine. Sunday 02 December 2007 213 It is reported that Portuguese police are investigating a disused barn in the south-east of Praia da Luz following the discovery of a blood stained towel which police believe may turn out to be Madeleine's blood. Fibres on the towel allegedly match fibres from the Renault Scenic hire car the McCanns' hired 25 days after Madeleine's disappearance. It is understood Portuguese detectives discussed the breakthrough when they met British police and a Crown Prosecution Service official last week at a police station in Leicester. The fresh information is believed to have come from mobile phone surveillance police who tracked a signal to the remote and deserted barn. There they found a towel with an Aztec design, which revealed three sites of blood deposits on the edge of the towel. Tests showed there was 'moderate' support to suggest the blood deposits matched Madeleine's blood. The results were not conclusive and are not regarded as being strong enough to be presented as evidence in a court case. However, close analysis of the towel revealed fibres which were not made of the towel material. The fibre fragments were microscopically examined against fibres found in the boot of the McCanns' Renault Scenic hire car. Portuguese police sources say there was 'strong support' that the fibres found on the towel matched fibres found from the boot of the car. |

Go back to the now famous "48 questions":
Is there any possible reasons why Kate should not have answered at least half of them? Lawyer present or not? Whether (she thought) that she may have already "covered" some of them? Pretty astonishing really. |
