Chit-Chat Spotify Playlists 2010 – JANUARY
1/ ‘La Cienega Just Smiled’ – Ryan Adams (Gold 2001) A sad song, but wonderful song-writing, reminiscent of the 70s singer-songwriters. One of his very best songs. 2/ ‘Dreaming’ – Blondie – (Eat To The Beat 1979) Hats off to the under-rated Clem Burke – fantastic drumming ......Beep, beep Blondie 3/ ‘Way Over Yonder In The Minor Key’ – Billy Bragg And Wilco (Mermaid Avenue 1998) Billy does Woody Guthrie, with haunting Natalie Merchant backing vocals 4/ ‘Take The Skinheads Bowling’ – Camper Van Beethoven (Telephone Free Landslide Victory 1985) Slower version (I’m sure?) of the quirky 80s US cult classic 5/ ‘Love Will Keep Us Together’ – The Captain And Tennille (Love Will Keep Us Together 1975) Great 70s song-writing return by Neil Sedaka, as the Captain’s wife tells us in the fadeout, ‘Sedaka is back’ 6a & 6b/ ‘San Quentin + Reprise’ – Johnny Cash (Live At San Quentin 1969) Johnny pens a song for the cons. They love it so much; he has to sing it again. These tough guys turn into a panto crowd, but it’s still fantastic. 7/ ‘Stool Pigeon’ – Kid Creole And The Coconuts (Tropical Gangsters 1982) Carefree, happy, dance-pop single from the early 80s 8/ ‘Lucid Dreams’ – Franz Ferdinand (Tonight: Franz Ferdinand 2008) The song is OK, but the highlight is the daring 4-minute Mini-moog electro-jam at the end, which sounds sensational on decent speakers 9/ ‘Summertime’ – Ella Fitzgerald And Louis Armstrong (Porgy And Bess 1957) You can have your Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin and modern day Divas, Lady Ella’s voice is beyond comparison, ably assisted by Louis Armstrong 10/ ‘Ripples’ – Genesis (A Trick Of The Tail 1976) 8-minute epic, from the newly Gabriel-free Genesis, about seeing the years pass by 11/ ‘The Butterfly Collector’ – The Jam (‘Strange Town’ Single B’side 1979) One of the best all-time B’sides – Think it’s about a Groupie, but it’s cutting stuff from Paul Weller, nonetheless 12/ ‘Gun Shot’ – Anthony Johnson (Gun Shot 1982) Jamaican dancehall classic from the early 80s, urging the Jamaican kids to pay no attention to guns and weapons 13/ ‘The Stoop’ – Little Jackie (The Stoop 2008) Summery NYC retro-soul from a rising star 14/ Danny O’Keefe – Magdalena (Breezy Stories 1973) Another Seventies Singer-Songwriter. Very much under-rated. Great production. 15/ ‘Showdown’ - Pendulum (In Silico 2008) Fantastic Drum and Bass, as ever, from the barnstorming Aussies 16/ ‘Breakin’ Up’ – Rilo Kiley (Under The Blacklight 2007) A happy separation song, showing a new poppier change of direction for LA band Rilo Kiley 17/ ‘The Story Of My Life’ – Marty Robbins (Single From 1957) Where it all started for Bacharach and David – a simple Country ballad 18/ ‘Let It Loose’ – The Rolling Stones (Exile On Main Street 1972) Gospel-tinged highlight from a fantastic album, rising to a crescendo. But there’s always Keith’s organ-sounding guitar riff keeping it on track. Great piano too. 19/ ‘Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) – Nancy Sinatra (How Does That Grab You 1966) Better cover version of Cher’s song from the same year. Written by Sonny Bono. 20/ ‘Why Don’t You Love Me (Like You Used To Do’ – Hank Williams (Single from 1950) Another timeless classic from the legendary Hank Williams. Written at the age of 26, he was dead 3 years later. ===================== |

Chit-Chat Spotify Playlists 2010 – FEBRUARY
1/ ‘Hello’ – The Beloved (Blissed Out 1990) Vince Hilaire and Sir Bufton Tufton in the same song. Very odd. 2/ ‘Under The Milky Way’ – The Church (Starfish 1988) Semi-obscure, mournful classic by Aussie band, The Church. Hit No.90 in the Charts (?!). The synth-bagpipe solo adds to the melancholy. 3/ ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’ – Julie Covington (Evita 1977) This is the original that’s rarely heard these days, even though it reached No.1. She sounds a lot more vulnerable and fragile, than the belting, over-the-top versions by Paige, Bassey, Dickson and (God-forbid) Madonna. 4/ ‘Amoureuse’ – Kiki Dee (Loving And Free 1973) Early 70s ballad about a woman losing her virginity, from errr ........ Motown’s finest 5/ ‘At The Chime Of The City Clock’ – Nick Drake (Bryter Layter 1970) Jazz-tinged masterpiece from the long-lost Nick Drake about the trials of life in the big city, as a newcomer. Stunning alto-sax solo. 6/ ‘Mr Cop’ – Gregory Isaacs (Extra Classic 1977) Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry influenced track with glorious vocals from the Jamaican reggae legend. 7/ ‘Stuck On Repeat’ – Little Boots (Hands 2009) Electropop delight from the English rising star. Very Kylie. 8/ ‘Head Home’ – Midlake (The Trials Of Van Occupanther 2006) 70s West-Coast soft rock meets 19th-Century reclusion in a 21st Century classic album 9/ ‘Swing On A Star’ – Maria Muldaur (Songs For The Young At Heart 2006) Easy-listening recording of the Bing Crosby 40s song for kids. The ‘Midnight At The Oasis’ lady has a great voice though 10/ ‘So Far Around The Bend’ – The National (Dark Was The Night Compilation 2009) Their decent offering for the AIDS/HIV Compilation from last year. Sounds a bit like Pavement. 11/ ‘Tubular Bells Pt.1’ – Mike Oldfield (Tubular Bells 1973) Was this really worth being subjected to Richard Branson’s grin for the next 40 years? Mandolin! 12/ ‘Chase The Sun’ (Edit) – Planet Funk (Non Zero Sumness 2002) The only thing I know about darts 13/ ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ – Elvis Presley (Single Released 1956) Stunning rockabilly track from Elvis, recorded in the same session as ‘Hound Dog’. Not a bad day’s work 14/ ‘Carolina Drama’ – The Raconteurs (Consolers Of The Lonely 2008) Epic folktale balled, which closes their latest album. Jack White on tip-top form 15/ ‘I Love Your Smile’ – Shanice (Inner Child 1991) The last truly great Motown song? 16/ ‘Graceland’ – Paul Simon (Graceland 1986) With wonderful backing vocals by the Everly Brothers, he rightly confirms this is the best song he’s ever done 17/ ‘Nelson Mandela’ – The Special AKA (In The Studio 1984) A Protest Song that truly worked in some way. 6 years till his release 20 years ago this month 18/ ‘Johnny Was’ – Stiff Little Fingers (Hanx! 1980) Bizarrely, this epic Live track is possibly the best Bob Marley cover version ever done. Better than Marley’s own, even. 19/ ‘International Players Anthem (I Choose You) (Remix)’ – UGK (ft. Outkast) (UKG Underground Kingz 2007) Great Southern Hip-Hop song from a couple of years ago. Sadly Pimp C is no longer with us. 20/ ‘My My, Hey Hey (Into The Blue) – Neil Young (Rust Never Sleeps 1979) A song about Neil Young’s own relevance in the world of Punk music at the time. More poignant with the passing of Kurt Cobain ================================= |

Chit-Chat Spotify Playlists 2010 – MARCH
1/ ‘Walk Like A Panther’ – The All Seeing I (ft. Tony Christie) (Pickled Eggs And Sherbert 1999) Fine song written by Jarvis Cocker, augmented by the impressive vocals of (pre-Peter Kay hysteria) Tony Christie 2/ ‘Feed The Birds (Tuppence A Bag) – Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins – The Original Soundtrack 1964) Not only Julie Andrews favourite Disney song, but Walt’s too 3/ ‘Look For Me’ – Chipmunk (ft.Talay Riley) (I Am Chipmunk 2009) Top 10 single, from this year, for the young hip-hop star from Tottenham 4/ ‘I Want You’ – Elvis Costello And The Attractions (Blood And Chocolate 1986) Elvis does heartbreak – a dark song about betrayal, beautifully produced by Nick Lowe 5/ ‘Pull The Wires From The Wall’ – The Delgados (Peloton 1998) Haunting song from one of John Peel’s favourites 6/ ‘Time’ – Easy Star All-Stars (ft. Corey Harris and Ranking Joe) (Dub Side Of The Moon 2003) A reggae version of the Pink Floyd classic track. Different, but in no way poorer for it. Great duel combination vocals 7/ ‘Green Fields’ – The Good, The Bad And The Queen (The Good, The Bad And The Queen 2007) Damon Albarn tells the story of a song he wrote for Marianne Faithfull – London-based, but Beatles influenced 8/ ‘Dancing In The City’ – Marshall Hain (Dancing In The City 1978) Almost one-hit wonders, Marshall Hain were the surnames of a male/female British duo and this is their worldwide smash hit 9/ ‘Digital Suicide (Lullaby) – Heartsrevolution (Hearts Japan EP 2008) Another boy/girl duo, this time from New York. Still to release their first album, which will be more electro 10/ ‘It Doesn’t Matter Anymore’ – Buddy Holly (Single from 1959) Buddy Holly moving away from Rock’n’Roll, with more strings. Two minutes of Pop perfection, that unfortunately became a posthumous hit. 11/ ‘Seattle’ – The Hot Toddies (Smell The Mitten 2007) Sugar-sweet pop from California girl-band (with naughty, filthy lyrics) 12/ ‘Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)... – Jay-Z (American Gangster 2007) Glorious street corner hit track from one of Jay-Z’s later albums, featuring Cassie, Beyonce and Kanye West on backing vocals 13/ ‘Drunkship Of Lanterns – The Mars Volta (De-Loused In The Comatorium 2003) The Mars Volta are totally unique. Their music almost physically smashes you in the face. Jazz-influenced epic produced by Rick Rubin 14/ ‘Messages (10” Version)’ – Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark 1980) Reworked (and much better) faster version of OMD’s first Top 40 hit. Possibly their best song 15/ ‘Telephone And Rubber Band’ – Penguin Cafe Orchestra (Penguin Cafe Orchestra 1981) Advertisement-friendly tune made from a sampled answering-machine tape loop of telephone noises and a plucked rubber band 16/ ‘Ganapati’ – Susheela Raman (Salt Rain 2001) Southern-India influenced track from the Mercury Prize nominated album 17/ ‘My Conversation’ – Slim Smith And The Uniques (Absolutely The Uniques 1969) Rocksteady delight with the amazing voice of the ill-fated Slim Smith, who bled to death, in his early Twenties, after putting his arm through a window. 18/ ‘Cherry Pie’ – Warrant (Cherry Pie 1990) Blatant, sexual, over-the-top Pomp Rock from the early 90’s. Nirvana came along a year later and that was that. 19/ ‘5:05 AM (Every Stranger’s Eyes) – Roger Waters (The Pros And Cons Of Hitchhiking 1986) Dark thoughts about relationships from post-Floyd Waters. Some quality guitar parts from Eric Clapton 20/ ‘Keep Me In Your Heart’ – Warren Zevon (The Wind 2002) Too weak to visit the studio, dying Zevon wrote and recorded his final tender song in his home ================================= |

Chit-Chat Spotify Playlists 2010 – APRIL
1/ ‘Up On Cripple Creek’ – The Band (The Band 1969) 5/1 to Show. The odds definitely were in your favour 2/ ‘The Funeral’ – Band Of Horses (Everything All The Time 2006) Epic anthem portraying social awkwardness from this Seattle band 3/ ‘The Boy With The Arab Strap’ – Belle And Sebastian (The Boy With The Arab Strap 1998) Title track form their 3rd album. Upbeat tune, down-in-the-dumps lyrics seemingly about London (An Arab Strap some form of tack?) 4/ ‘Useless’ – Depeche Mode (Ultra 1997) Quality, shimmering Industrial Rock from the Basildon band 5/ ‘Five To One’ – The Doors (Waiting For The Sun 1968) I’d say it’s pretty long odds that The Lizard King, Jim Morrison, was a fan of horse-racing 6/ ‘Cheltenham’ – The Favourites (Charity Single From 2010) The less said about this the better 7/ ‘Chips Ahoy! (Live)’ – The Hold Steady (Boys And Girls In America 2006) Imagine having a girlfriend, who has the gift of predicting the winner of horse-races? 8/ ‘Hope For Us All’ – Nick Lowe (At My Age 2007) Nick Lowe gently reflects on life, with a touch of class 9/ ‘Long Shot (Kick De Bucket)’ – The Pioneers (Longshot 1969) ‘All we money gone a hell’ sums up a bad day we’ve all had. Classic Jamaican Rocksteady 10/ ‘Bottle Of Smoke’ – The Pogues (If I Should Fall From Grace With God 1988) ‘Fcuk the stewards – A trip to Lourdes – Might give the old fcukers, the power of sight’ - Elation from Shane, as a big price winner romps home 11/ ‘Wild Horses’ – Prefab Sprout (Jordan: The Comeback 1990) Slick songwriting, as ever, from Paddy McAloon from a magical album 12/ ‘Little Red Corvette’ – Prince (1999 1982) When the little Purple one refers to horses and jockeys, he ain’t meaning the racetrack. Filthy little beggar 13/ ‘Dead Flowers’ – The Rolling Stones (Sticky Fingers 1971) Country-influenced track with reference to the Kentucky Derby 14/ ‘The William Tell Overture’ – Rossini (William Tell Opera 19th Century) It’s Hi-Yo, Silver! Away! (apparently) 15/ ‘Superstar’ – Sonic Youth (If I Were A Carpenter – Compilation 1994) Dreamlike stand-out cover, reaffirming Sonic Youth’s obsession with Karen Carpenter – the 2nd song from this year’s selection to be about a groupie 16/ ‘Wish You Were Here’ – Sparklehorse (Ft. Thom Yorke) (Lords Of Dogtown OST 2005) A fine cover of an ‘untouchable’ song from Mark Linkous and his band. Unfortunately shot himself dead in an alleyway last month 17/ ‘Hey Nineteen’ - Steely Dan (Gaucho 1980) No.19 is Priests Leap who has no chance this year (...finished last) 18/ ‘Not Addicted’ – The Streets (A Grand Don’t Come For Free 2004) Mike Skinner turns to the bookies to try to raise some cash, but he’s not addicted......he can stop anytime 19/ ‘Black Horse And The Cherry Tree’ – KT Tunstall (Eye To The Telescope 2004) Grammy-nominated track, with a nod to Bo Diddely 20/ ‘The Eve Of The War’ – Jeff Wayne (The War Of The Worlds 1978) A Million-to-One shot comes in, during pre-Betfair days, where the limit is now 1000 ============================== |

A tip for getting this Playlist in date order
Click the grey box that says 'Track' at the top of the Playlist a few times Eventually you'll get 'Rej' at the top and 'Why Don't You Love Me' from January at the bottom. This works with any Spotify Playlist, that has become jumbled up |

Unfortunately, it looks like the Golden age of Spotify is going to come to an end.
It was brilliant while it lasted |
|
By:
The music streaming website Spotify, which offers listeners unlimited free access, is to restrict the amount of songs that users can play without paying. From 1 May the service, which has six million users in Britain and Europe, will reduce the amount of free listening available from 20 hours a month to 10.
Non-subscribers, who use Spotify's free, advert-supported option, will only be able to listen to a particular track a maximum of five times. The move is designed to encourage more people to pay for subscriptions. At present, a £9.99-a-month fee allows Spotify users to play an unlimited amount of music, without adverts, on a computer or mobile phone. Subscription music just doesn't work - Janus, Apple, Rhapsody and Napster are either gone or struggling along far in the background |

The money merchants have moved into Spotify and the whole thing is now a shambles.
The clever developers who started it all have jumped ship and we're left with a mediocre product. Google starts a new service this week, I think. Like Betfair, it seems to be going to mobiles and tablets, totally ignoring the people who just sit in front of a desktop/laptop screen. |

Poppy - is this Spotify thing worth me getting involved with?
Aren't Apple introducing 'Apple Radio' or similar to effectively kill off Spotify ? |
|
By:
To tell you the truth, Alun2005, probably not.
Knowing the app inside-out, I can modify it to get rid of the bad things, of which there's been quite a lot lately. But for £4.99/month I have it connected to Hi-Fi system and FM Transmitter to all rooms in the house and portable music inside and outside. 20 million songs to easily search and presented smartly. Frankly, what gives me the most pleasure is hearing new stuff released each month and rarely heard 'classics' from yesteryear, rather than normal personal record collection listening. |
|
By:
Thanks Poppy. Good advice I'm sure. Looks like I missed the product at its best and may wait for this thing I heard about on Radio 4 recently that Apple are doing.
