Under Control - Calvin Harris and Alesso featuring Hurts
1st December http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZqmarGShxg Calvin's fifth no.1. It's a very predictable,generic piece of dance music. |

Somewhere Only We Know - Lily Allen

Skyscraper - Sam Bailey
22nd December http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh2cMMFanB8 A predictable Christmas no.1 this year with Sam Bailey outselling Pharrell Williams by more than two copies to one. 149,000 is a decent amount but it is the second lowest first week sales for an X Factor winner's single. She's a glorified cruise ship singer really,I wouldn't expect her to have more than one more no.1. Demi Lovato's original version reached no.32 in 2012 and then resurfaced at no.7 two months ago after Hannah sang it on the X Factor. |

Happy - Pharrell Williams
29th December http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6Sxv-sUYtM Pharrell's third no.1 of the year. I liked it,it's a jaunty sort of song that will appeal to all age groups. If you're going to a new year's eve party, you're probably going to hear it. The video for the song lasts 24 hours, this is just the edited version. |

By:
Timber - Pitbull featuring Ke$ha
5th January http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHUbLv4ThOo A third no.1 for both Pitbull and Ke$ha. It's a country/dance/rap song which wasn't too bad, certainly better than that 'Cotton Eye Joe' thing from the 90s. Rihanna was supposed to be the featured singer but she didn't have the time. |
|

It's the sort of song that I shouldn't like, but I do!
Is that TNM stood in the background in that bar? ![]() |

Rather Be - Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne
26th January http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-M1AtrxztU I was looking forward to hearing this as I liked that 'Mozart's House' thing they did last year. This one doesn't have the quirkyness of that song but it's still very good, one of the better no.1s from the last few years. It's sold 163,000 copies which is the biggest weekly sale for a January no.1 single since Spaceman by Babylon Zoo in 1996. |

Money On My Mind - Sam Smith
23rd February http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0G9T5Bnjlc Sam Smith follows up his Critics' Choice award at the Brits with his first solo no.1 and second overall. He's clearly a decent singer but this is a forgettable song with some annoying backing vocals. |
|
By:
Happy - Pharrell Williams
2nd March Pharrell Williams creates a bit of chart history as 'Happy' is back at no.1 for a third time. It's 57 years since this last happened. The only two singles to have three seperate turns at no.1 are 'I Believe' by Frankie Laine in 1953 and 'Singing The Blues' by Guy Mitchell in 1957. |
|
By:
My Love - Route 94 featuring Jess Glynne
9th March Jess Glynne's second no.1 of the year. She doesn't appear in this video either so I still don't know what she looks like. This house track has a great sultry sound to it but it's just the same line repeated over and over again. Route 94 is London DJ Rowan Jones,he named himself after the highway that connects Chicago and Detroit. |

I was fortunate to stumble across this thread as i only post on the darts forum.
As it's been pretty quiet on there, i had a wander and looked in on chit chat and stumbled across this thread. I spent the week reading through the entire thread. As others have rightly said, a monumental effort by many of the contributors sitting through some utter guff from the 50's to the present day. Having read through the many posts i now believe the 60's and 70's were by far the best decades for chart No 1's. The last 20+ years of No 1's were truly awful and no, i won't be revisiting them. However, i'll be tuning into the first 20+ years of charts to see if some of those tunes were as bad back then as some say, as well as finding some hidden gems. All i all, a remarkable musical journey through my younger years. Thanks again to E L Wisty for having the mad cap idea to start the ball rolling. I really was hooked from the opening post. Regards, DnB ![]() |

Thanks DnB. I see the thread is now 4 years old. Time flies. If Betfair ever allow new members to join the forum, maybe others might do the same and read it from start to finish.

Tsunami - DVBBS and Borgeous featuring Tinie Tempah
16th March http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-VwSUfPJco Tinie's fourth no.1. DVBBS are a Canadian duo and Borgeous is a Miami DJ. I've got nothing good I can say about this song. The main electro riff can only appeal to a 5 year old and the rest of it is a noisy mess. The original instrumental version of this reached no.1 in Belgium and Holland last summer. |

interesting to see the point where EL Wisty called it a day - it was just after he listened to that awful Shirley Bassey song ,his ears were ringing for days ![]() |

I Got U - Duke Dumont featuring Jax Jones
23rd March http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHCYHldJi_g Duke Dumont's second no.1. I don't remember the first one but looking back to last year,I gave it a good review and I'm going to do the same with this one. It has an upbeat, summery feel to it with great use of steel drums. I've always liked the sound of steel drums. The song uses a sample from 'My Love Is Your Love' by Whitney Houston. |

She Looks So Perfect - 5 Seconds Of Summer
30th March http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2BYmmTI04I Australian version of McFly. They were the support act for One Direction on their world tour. A very predictable sound but not quite as bad as I was expecting. |

The Man - Aloe Blacc
6th April http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGy9i8vvCxk Aloe's second no.1. He was the vocalist on Avicii's chart topper 'Wake Me Up' last year. It's not too bad,the orchestra and gospel choir give it a bit of scale. Elton John and Bernie Taupin get a share of the royalties as he has borrowed a line from 'Your Song'. |
|
By:
Nobody To Love - Sigma
13th April http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD5fLb-WgBU Drum and bass duo from Leeds. I liked the piano part and the drums but I'm not so keen on the singing part. The vocals are from the Kanye West track 'Bound 2' but it's not a sample. The singer he used,Charlie Wilson, has been replaced by an uncredited session singer. I hope you're keeping up with this. The song has 15 co-writers,one of whom is called Norman Whiteside. I don't think it's the ex Man U player. I don't know why it needed so many people to put this together,it's a fairly straightforward piece of music. |

Hideaway - Kiesza
20th April http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESXgJ9-H-2U Canadian singer/songwriter. I'm not sure about this one,I would need to hear it again to make a proper judgement. I'm not too impressed on the first listen,it has a similar sound to some of the other recent no.1s. It has another one of those 'Unfinished Sympathy' filmed in one take walking down the street videos with this one involving lots of 80s style dancing. Kiesza is a classically trained ballerina who has also worked as a code breaker for the Royal Canadian Navy. A woman of many talents. |

Waves (Robin Schulz Remix) - Mr Probz
27th April http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUjE9H8QlA4 Yet another dance/house no.1. It was pleasant enough to listen to but nothing in it to make me remember it in the future. Mr Probz's real name is Dennis Princewell Stehr,he survived being shot in Amsterdam in 2010 and is the fourth Dutch act in the last year to reach no.1. |

Summer - Calvin Harris

I Will Never Let You Down - Rita Ora
18th May http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50GQjUZ4P3M Rita's fourth no.1. I didn't like it when I heard it and now I've discovered it was written and produced by Calvin Harris,I can see why. More of his generic pop/dance rubbish. I was unaware that these two have been an item for the last year. Rita is now tied with Geri Halliwell as the British female singer with the most solo UK no.1 singles. |

Today I listened to a superb collection of YT clips.
All No1's from 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's. Each song lasting no more than 10 seconds. The 60's & 70's were great, 80's okish, 90's were awful and turned off after 2 mins. Never bothered playing the noughties. A most sterling job by Tommaso Romero http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uB7kRFGkRng |

Stay With Me - Sam Smith
25th May http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB-5XG-DbAA Sam's second no.1 of the year and his third overall. After all the dance music no.1s we've had this year,it's a refreshing change to hear a good old fashioned ballad. There's a bit of a churchy sound to this one with the organ and gospel choir. |
|
By:
I Wanna Feel - SecondCity
1st June http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wRW57nBLMI More house music. I found this one to be boring and repetitive. It samples 'You're Makin' Me High' by Toni Braxton and is the second no.1 this year to feature uncredited vocals by Kelli-Leigh Henry-Devila. He's probably uncredited as there wouldn't be enough room on the record sleeve for his name. SecondCity's real name is Rowan Harrington. |
|
By:
Sing - Ed Sheeran
8th June http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlYcUqEPN58 Ed Sheeran goes all R&B. This is alright,a big improvement on the tedious acoustic stuff he normally comes up with. The song was co-written and produced by Pharrell Williams. |

Ghost - Ella Henderson
15th June http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tA8AfQaUnXM I wasn't sure which song JB was referring to but now I realize he had already foreseen that this would be the new no.1. It's a good effort but I expected something a bit better from probably the best singer the X Factor has produced. There's no discernible style to it. Ella finished 6th in the 2012 series. |
