Troublemaker - Olly Murs featuring Flo Rida
25th November http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aQDOUbErNg Olly beats the Girls Aloud comeback single to the top of the chart, thereby equalling their tally of four no.1s. This is a decent enough pop song. |

The Power Of Love - Gabrielle Aplin
9th December http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNpeK7sDLzE Not the Jennifer Rush song, nor the Huey Lewis one, this is a cover of the Frankie Goes To Hollywood one, giving some much needed royalties to its writers Peter Gill,Holly Johnson and Mark O'Toole. Featured on the John Lewis Christmas ad,it's been in the top 10 for four weeks and was dropping down the chart until its sales were boosted by James Arthur's rendition of the song on last week's X Factor. It's not quite as good as the original but it is a competent effort. |

Impossible - James Arthur
16th December http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mhj15W23IjA This is easily the year's fastest selling single with first week sales of 490,000. The original version,by Shontelle, got to no.9 in 2010. It's a bit repetitive and I don't like the production. Decent singer though, his own music is likely to be better than this. |

He Ain't Heavy,He's My Brother - The Justice Collective
23rd December http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svOX9dy0hyw This single outsold James Arthur by 269,000 copies to 224,000 to be this year's Christmas no.1. With singers from different eras and genres,it's a patchy effort but it's still a classic song. Among the vocalists are Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen. With the proceeds from the single going straight to solicitors,I'm not sure if this can be called a charity single. |

Scream And Shout - will.i.am featuring Britney Spears
13th January http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYtGl1dX5qI After five weeks in the top 3,this finally moves up to no.1. It's a decent enough bit of electropop. As neither of these two are the best of singers there's a lot of auto-tuning involved. This is Britney's sixth no.1 and her first since 2004. |
|

Get Up (Rattle) - Bingo Players featuring Far East Movement
27th January http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hlvlEGCoAQ If,like me,you've never heard of them,Bingo Players are a dutch dance duo and Far East Movement come from Los Angeles. The song is quite annoying but this video, featuring a gang of vigilante ducks on a council estate,is certainly worth watching. Presumably,it's the video as much as the song that has led to this going straight in at no.1. |

Thrift Shop - Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz
10th February http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK8mJJJvaes So thrift shop is what they call a charity shop in America. I didn't like the song much. It's only the second self released single to reach no.1 in the UK. Macklemore is a Seattle based rapper. |

I Could Be The One - Avicii vs Nicky Romero
17th February http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bek1y2uiQGA I assumed Avicii was the DJ and Nicky Romero was the singer but they are both DJs and the uncredited singer is Noonie Bao. I liked that 'Levels' song that Avicii did last year but this one isn't memorable. As with the no.1 from 27th January,it's the video that stands out rather than the song itself. I did not expect that ending. |

One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks) - One Direction
24th February http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDcA9eTw3Xg For this year's Comic Relief single,One Direction combine Blondie with the Undertones. It's dreadful,John Peel will be spinning in his grave. Do they even know the Blondie song is about a stalker? Probably not. |

By:
Mirrors - Justin Timberlake
3rd March http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U41KPUfOSFk Justin's fourth no.1. Two unusual things about this one,it doesn't have a video for me to watch and it's 8 minutes long. This makes it the second longest UK no.1 behind 'All Around The World' by Oasis. The first five minutes are an average pop song followed by three minutes of the same line being repeated over and over again so it's a bit of a let down. |
|
By:
What About Us - The Saturdays featuring Sean Paul
24th March http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH-sqgv9RLQ After five years and 11 previous top 10 singles, the Saturdays finally get their first no.1. That doesn't mean it's any good. It's a generic factory produced piece of rubbish with no personality. |

Let's Get Ready To Rhumble - PJ & Duncan
31st March http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_sJmIQrH54 It's not April Fool's Day until tomorrow so I have to accept that this has really happened. Following a performance of the song by Ant and Dec on their show last week,84000 musically deaf people have decided to download it. First time around,it reached no.9 in 1994. |

Need U (100%) - Duke Dumont featuring A*M*E
7th April http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnJIb4A-DuY Some 90s style house music now. Not that it has much to beat, but I would put this down as the best no.1 of the year so far. Duke Dumont is a British DJ. A*M*E (Aminata Kabba) was born in Sierra Leone and moved to London when she was 8 after her mother's hair salon was burned to the ground. |

Waiting All Night - Rudimental featuring Ella Eyre
21st April http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M97vR2V4vTs Rudimental's second no.1 in less than a year holding off the challenge of will.i.am and Justin Bieber's collabaration. I enjoyed it,good chorus with a nifty brass section. Ella Eyre doesn't have a wiki page yet so I can't tell you anything about her and she doesn't appear in the video so I don't know what she looks like. |

Ive listened to a few of these lately, and one or two are quite good.
However the featuring or versus ones seem to follow a similar pattern. A DJ or computer geek uses a drum machine/computer to write a basic backing track, then gets a singer with a modicum of talent to sing on it. And sometimes they completely take the piss like DJ Sammys "Heaven", which slightly rewrites an existing backing track, gets a woman to sing on it, then doesnt even give her a credit on the song. WTF. |

Get Lucky - Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams
28th April http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NV6Rdv1a3I Sixteen years after their first hit single,'Da Funk',Daft Punk have their first no.1. I like a lot of their songs and have their 'best of' CD,so I was looking forward to hearing this one. It's alright but not as good as I was anticipating. With Nile Rodgers on guitar,it has sold 155,000 copies this week, the largest one week tally of the year so far. Daft Punk are the sixth French act to get to no.1 in the UK. |
|
By:
La La La - Naughty Boy featuring Sam Smith
26th May http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O1_3zBUKM8 I quite liked this song and the video was interesting. Naughty Boy's real name is Shahid Khan. He won £44,000 on Deal Or No Deal in 2005 which he used to buy recording equipment. It looks like it has proved to be a sensible investment. |

Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell
2nd June http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyDUC1LUXSU I don't like this one at all, there doesn't seem to be any tune to it. It's the fastest selling single of the year so far with 190,000 copies sold in the first week (and another 200,000 last week). |
|
By:
I Love It - Icona Pop featuring Charli XCX
30th June http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxxajLWwzqY A straightforward pop song with a catchy chorus sung in the vocal style of 90s girl duo Shampoo. I didn't mind it on first listen but it would probably irritate me if I heard it a few more times. Icona Pop are a Swedish duo while Charli XCX comes from Hertfordshire. |

Love Me Again - John Newman
7th July http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfihYWRWRTQ John Newman,a good old fashioned name. He's a 22 year old Yorkshireman, the 2013 equivalent of Rick Astley. This is his second no.1,he featured on Rudimental's 'Feel The Love' last year. It's a decent song, there's a northern soul sort of sound to it. This is the second video for a no.1 this year to finish with someone being run over by a white van. What's that all about? |

Wake Me Up! - Avicii
21st July http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5y_KJAg8bHI Avicii's second no.1 of the year, featuring uncredited vocals by Aloe Blacc. It's a country music/dance music hybrid, the fastest selling single of the year so far with 267,000 copies sold in its first week. It wasn't too bad but I can't believe that many people would actually buy it. |

We Can't Stop - Miley Cyrus
11th August http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrUvu1mlWco Surprisingly, this is Miley's first top ten single. Three of her previous efforts stalled at no.11. So she has finally beaten her dad's chart placing of no.3 with his 'Achy Breaky Heart' in 1992. I didn't like the song but I'm sure it will appeal to its target audience of teenage girls. |
|
By:
Burn - Ellie Goulding
18th August http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGyEd0aKWZE Ellie's first no.1. It's a fairly average electronic pop song,I expected better. Leona Lewis recorded the song for her 2012 album but it was eventually omitted from the final track listing. |
|
By:
Roar - Katy Perry
8th September http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CevxZvSJLk8 Katy's fourth no.1 with 180,000 copies sold in its first week. I can't deny this is a good pop song which I wouldn't mind hearing again. |

Talk Dirty - Jason Derulo featuring 2 Chainz
22nd September http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbtPXFlZlHg Jason's third no.1. This is terrible, one of the worst no.1s of the year. The only good bit was the saxophone part but that is actually sampled from the track 'Hermetico' by Israeli group Balkan Beat Box. |
|
By:
Counting Stars - OneRepublic
6th October http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT_nvWreIhg The closest chart battle of the year sees OneRepublic beat The Vamps (whoever they are) by 1150 copies. This single has moved up the chart the old fashioned way, taking ten weeks to reach no.1. It's alright but I expected a bit more from a song that's gradually built up a following. |
|
By:
Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus
13th October http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My2FRPA3Gf8 After all the hype and publicity,it was inevitible that this would be today's no.1. This video, featuring a naked Miley, has already been viewed 220 million times. As for the song,it's a bit better than her no.1 from August but still forgettable. |

Royals - Lorde
27th October http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFasFq4GJYM 16 year old New Zealander Lorde sees off the challenge of last year's X Factor winner James Arthur to reach no.1 with her debut single. It's certainly a lot better than his effort. It has a sparse, minimal production, not the sort of song I'd expect to get to no.1. She's the youngest solo artist to have a no.1 single since Billie in 1998 with 'Beacause We Want To'. |
|
By:
The Monster - Eminem featuring Rihanna
3rd November http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDXXi19_7iE This is their fourth collaboration. It was boring and predictable. Rihanna joins Elvis Presley and the Beatles as the only acts to have no.1 singles in seven consecutive years. |
|

Look Right Through (MK Remix) - Storm Queen
10th November http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9c3EQhtf9-U Storm Queen is American DJ Morgan Geist. This is a remix of his song from 2010. It was alright but at only two and a half minutes long,a bit too short. |
|
By:
Animals - Martin Garrix
17th November http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCYcHz2k5x0 17 year old Dutch schoolboy. An annoying, cliched piece of European dance music. Trashing a car and then setting fire to it hardly makes him a decent role model for his peers. |
|
By:
Somewhere Only We Know - Lily Allen
24th November http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve9cBwI-pAg Lily's third no.1,as featured in the John Lewis Christmas advert. It's not half as good as Keane's original version which reached no.3 in 2004. I always thought they were singing 'Oh sympathy' and it still sounds like sympathy when she sings it but I have now discovered it's 'Oh simple thing'. This is the closest chart battle of the year with Lily beating Bastille by only 660 copies. |
