Good Feeling - Flo Rida
8th January 2012 for 1 week http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OnnDqH6Wj8 Flo Rida's fourth no.1. This uses a sample from 'Levels' by Avicii which was in the top 10 at the same time. Both songs also sample 'Something's Got A Hold On Me' by Etta James from 1962. I like the Avicii song,it would have made a worthy chart topper but this song by Flo Rida is forgettable. Etta James died the week after this reached no.1. |

Domino - Jessie J
15th January 2012 for 2 weeks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJtB55MaoD0&ob=av2e I don't like this one,it's very Katy Perry sounding. And why do they have to change the shot in the video every second? I've noticed a lot of pop videos these days are edited that way. It makes them very exhausting to watch. |
|

Interesting thread that is nearly complete after two years!
Sure it's been asked before, but what happened to the Original poster, when and why did he give up ? |
|
By:
He's still around under a different name. He gave up towards the end of the 80s,I think, due to a lack of time and not liking much of this modern music.

Twilight - Cover Drive
29th January 2012 for 1 week http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73noUWDDpWw&ob=av2n This isn't too bad but nothing special. I'm not sure how this managed to go straight in at no.1. Cover Drive are from Barbados. |

Titanium - David Guetta featuring Sia
5th February 2012 for 1 week http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRfuAukYTKg&ob=av2n Fantastic song,I like this one a lot. Soaring vocals and swirly synth sounds. Great video as well. Sia recorded a demo version of this for Katy Perry but she turned it down. It was then recorded by Mary J Blige whose version leaked online so Sia's original version was released by Guetta. |

Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye featuring Kimbra
12th February 2012 for 1 week http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY An Australia/New Zealand duet now. This is a top quality song. It starts off with a sample from 'Seville' by Luiz Bonfa combined with 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' being played on the xylophone. This reached no.1 the old fashioned way, gradually moving up a few places each week. |
|
By:
Hot Right Now - DJ Fresh featuring Rita Ora
19th February 2012 for 1 week http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7OPZOBJZyI This the first drum and bass no.1. It doesn't really sound like what I know to be drum and bass, more of a commercial D&B/pop hybrid. It's a bit too frenetic for my liking. |
|

Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye featuring Kimbra
26th February 2012 This has returned to the top of the chart for another four weeks and is still the current no.1. |

Well done mate, your ears must have bled along the way given some of the dross that miraculously made it's way to No.1 over the years, the x factor years must have been particularly hard.
Now how about "I'm going to listen to every US No.1 in the charts ever", off you go ![]() |

Part Of Me - Katy Perry
25th March http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuwfgXD8qV8&ob=av2e The brand new no.1. This is Katy Perry's third chart topper. It's very like her other songs,a case of if it ain't broke don't fix it. The video sees Katy cutting her hair and joining the US Marines after dumping her boyfriend. |

top stuff anubis, been off the forum for a week so apologies for the lateness in congratulations. For those of you asking I was the original EL Wisty, and I enjoyed doing this thread early on, was a real eye opener listening to some of the fifties number ones which were mainly awful imo, with a few highlights ("poor people of paris" by Winifred Atwell a personal favourite). Learned loads aswell during sixties and seventies but afraid just didn't have the obvious staying power of anubis. Well done to madmadmoon for his efforts along the way too, don't know what happened to him though.
ONce again, monumental effort anubis, no way I could've hacked the last 15 years or so, you're obviously made of sterner stuff. Think of all the knowledge you've gained - you'd make a useful teammate in a popular music quiz. |
|
By:
Thanks,Rob. Yes,there were a lot of songs I didn't know were cover versions and I didn't know about most of the samples taken from other songs. I think I noticed mad mad moon on another thread a few weeks ago so he's still around.
Now you have to choose your top 10 no.1s for my survey, see the other thread. You still have the weekend, voting will close on Monday. |
|
By:
I will vote for sure anubis. and I'll have to put winifred atwell in somewhere, my personal highlight of my contribution to the thread:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O50GfY29Iaw 2 minutes of out of tune piano playing perfection. well done again, i really feel i should say so in any post on the thread. |
|
By:
Although I read this thread from the start,I didn't click on the youtube links so in my own time I might listen to those 50s and 60s no.1s that I don't know.
|
|
By:
I kept up with the thread the whole way.
It remains one of life's great treasures how you can reference your own march through the ages by hearing some of these tracks again. A fantastic effort boys and a reminder of how good this forum can be ![]() |

By:
yep great achievement this.
