Lay Me Down (Red Nose Day 2015) - Sam Smith featuring John Legend
15th March https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvJX7OgPYww This year's Comic Relief single. It's an adequate piano ballad, they sing it well. This is the third version of the song to chart. The first version by Sam Smith only got to no.46 in 2013,his re-recording reached no.15 this year and is still in the top 20. |

Hold My Hand - Jess Glynne
29th March https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLyUcAUMmMY Not Jeff Lynne,it's Jess Glynne. She does have a similar hairstyle. This is her third no.1 but the first on her own. I liked it,a good pop/dance song with a hint of country. |

By:
See You Again - Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth
19th April https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgKAFK5djSk From the soundtrack to 'Fast & Furious 7',this is a tribute to the actor Paul Walker who died in a car crash before the film was finished. It's a piano ballad/hip hop thing which I didn't like at all,the worst no.1 of the year so far. |

By:
Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) - OMI
3rd May https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1Jp-V4jalI Moving up after two weeks at no.2,this is possibly the first no.1 ever to feature prominent use of both the trumpet and the bongo drums. I like this one,a chilled out tune for the summer months. OMI is Jamaican singer Omar Pasley. This is a remix of his song from 2012. |

Only 6 no.1s so far this year,so it hasn't been too bad. |

Want To Want Me - Jason Derulo
31st May https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rClUOdS5Zyw Jason's fourth no.1. This does nothing for me at all,mediocre. |

By:
Not Letting Go - Tinie Tempah featuring Jess Glynne
28th June https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsDwItoNlLc Tinie's sixth no.1 and Jess' fourth chart topper inside the last 18 months. I didn't like it the first time I heard it but this is the fourth time I've listened to it and it's growing on me. Not too bad. |

Are You With Me - Lost Frequencies
5th July https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjHMDlAPMUw Lost Frequencies is Belgian DJ Felix De Laet. This is his remix of a country music song from 2012 by Easton Corbin. It would be pleasant enough to listen to driving around on a summer's day. It's just 2 minutes 18 seconds long but still 40 seconds longer than the shortest no.1 which is 'What Do You Want?' by Adam Faith. It's also the last ever Sunday no.1. From now on the singles chart will be updated on Fridays. |
|
By:
House Every Weekend - David Zowie
10th July https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfEVLXu3NXs A rather appropriate song to be the first ever Friday no.1 single. I didn't like myself though,it's one for cool teenagers only. David Zowie is a DJ from Chatham in Kent and it's the name he was born with. |
|
By:
Black Magic - Little Mix
17th July https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkElfR_NPBI This is a surprise to me. I thought Little Mix would have quietly faded away by now. It's a catchy, well produced pop song with a Taylor Swift sort of sound to it. |
|
By:
Drag Me Down - One Direction
7th August https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_-qsqRC5u8 One Direction's fourth no.1. This is a poor effort. If anyone else had recorded this song,it probably wouldn't have made the top 40. |
|
By:
Marvin Gaye - Charlie Puth featuring Meghan Trainor
14th August https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igNVdlXhKcI A catchy song with a retro 60s style production. I quite like it. This is the first no.1 where the title of the song is the same as a singer who has also had a no.1 single. |

great work anubis .
it's a weird feeling these days that i hear a song i really like and think it's new in the charts ,only to find it was number 1 two years ago . shows how much notice i take ![]() |

Don't Be So Hard On Yourself - Jess Glynne
21st August https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THeLVhU53ow Yet another no.1 for Jess Glynne. As ever,a great vocal performance but the song is too similar to her previous efforts to really stand out. |
|
By:
Fight Song - Rachel Platten
28th August . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo1VInw-SKc The 1300th no.1 single. This is all very American, she's managed the fit all the cliches required for a hit song into the three and a half minutes. 1.01 this song will be chosen by someone to perform on this year's X Factor. Looking at the video,I thought she was some teenager with her debut single but she's actually 34 years old and released her first album way back in 2003. |

What Do You Mean? - Justin Bieber
4th September . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK_0jXPuIr0 I have so far avoided having to listen to a Justin Bieber song for this thread but now he finally lands his first no.1 with his 28th top 40 hit. I expected something a bit better than this lacklustre effort, the only memorable thing about it was using the tick tock of a grandfather clock as a bassline. |
|

Macklemore and "Downtown" is a cert for number one.
Contains the immortal lyrics" If I only had one helmet I'd give it to you" and " Tiramisu, tearing my suit" ![]() Even FACTS will be dancing to this! ![]() http://youtu.be/JGhoLcsr8GA |

That Sigala song is quite catchy, a worthy number one.
One of the better songs this year? |
|
By:
Easy Love - Sigala
11th September . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozx898ADTxM Yes,JB,this is quite good. The xylophone is one of the underused instruments in pop music so it's good to hear a xylophone based track get to no.1. I thought the sample of ABC by the Jackson 5 was speeded up but having just listened to the original,it's not,Jacko's voice really was that high when he was that age. Sigala is a DJ from Norfolk. His real name is Bruce Fielder. |

http://youtu.be/YQHsXMglC9A 30th October. Blimey, this has had 700,000,000 views so I think you've probably heard it, Adele and Lionel Richie had this as their first song at their recent wedding. |

Love Yourself ~ Justin Bieber
http://youtu.be/oyEuk8j8imI 4th December Blimey, this is his fourth number one in as many months, must be some sort of record, pardon the pun. It's the same as all his other songs. Please make those Elves work faster Anubis7 |

Thanks for stepping in JB. I'm in between houses at the moment and don't have regular internet access so you can carry on holding the fort for a bit longer. I should be back on here in Feb or March. You're a brave man having to listen to two Bieber songs back to back.
While I'm here,I'll just throw in one of my amazing chart facts. Justin Bieber is the first living act since The Beatles in 1963 to replace himself at no.1. John Lennon and Elvis Presley have done it since then but they were dead. |

NHS CHOIR ~ A Bridge Over You
http://youtu.be/T8qHXlShfUQ 25th December 2015 A mash-up of Simon & Garfunkel/Coldplay songs, pleasant to the ear with some good vocals in the holiday season. The choir consists of doctors, nurses and other NHS staff from the Lewisham and Greenwich area and they rehearse on Tuesday evenings after work. All proceeds going to charities. (MIND, SAMH, NIAMH & Carers UK) A junior doctor had the idea of releasing this song as a single after they'd appeared on Gareth Malones "Sing While You Work" show on BBC 2. Sold 127k copies. I love the NHS too! ![]() |

Pop music fans on Chit Chat may be excited to know that Justin Bieber has set a new record in today's Top 40 singles chart announced a few minutes ago.
He is the first act since the charts started to have songs at number 1, 2 and 3. Number 1 ~ Love Yourself Number 2 ~ Sorry Number 3 ~ What Do You Mean? ![]() |
|
By:
Shawn Mendes ~ Stitches
http://youtu.be/VbfpW0pbvaU 22nd Jan After 6 weeks in the chart this finally replaces Bieber at number one. Anyone could be forgiven for thinking that it is another Bieber song though! He's only 17 years old and is from Canada, probably got a big future. A catchy melodic tune, pleasant on the ears but instantly forgettable. |
|
By:
Zayn ~ Pillowtalk http://youtu.be/C_3d6GntKbk 5th Feb 23 year old ex one directioner Zayn Malik bags number one with the fastest selling single of the year barely 12 months after leaving the supergroup because of musical differences. I've put the link for you but my advice is don't waste 3 & 1/2 minutes of your life listening to this soft ballad, it's awful! Let's hope the DMA's claim top spot soon. |
|
By:
Lucas Graham ~ 7 Years
http://youtu.be/LHCob76kigA 12th Feb A lovely song that's well worth a listen, this is actually a 4-piece band from Belgium and not a solo artist as the name suggests. its a powerful ballad that could bring a tear to the eye of a chit chatter, you've been warned! They're quite big over there having had 5 number 1 singles. |
|
By:
Mike Posner ~ I Took A Pill in Ibiza
March 18th After about 7 years at number one Lucas Graham have been dislodged by a song that has steadily gained popularity over the last four weeks or so. Mike, real name Micheal Henrion is an American singer songwriter, strikes me as a one hit wonder, but what do I know? It's supposedly anti drugs, I've heard it a few times, didn't like it at first but it's growing on me now. |
|

Excellent work JB. Thanks for keeping things up to date. There weren't too many singles for you to listen to. The chart seems to have reverted back to the way it was in the 70s with most no.1s taking a few weeks to climb the chart first and then staying at the top for a while.
I have moved in to my new house now and have just got broadband connected so I'll take the next song if that's alright with you. |

One Dance - Drake featuring Wizkid & Kyla
15th April . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJN4RIYf7EI Canadian rapper with his 2nd no.1. I don't like rap music but he's not shouting the lyrics and there's some melody in there so it wasn't too bad. This is the first no.1 this year to have a female singer on it. It's not officially on youtube yet but I managed to find it on there. Drake might take it down if he sees it. |
