You often hear commentators declare a player needs to put topspin on the white to gain good position for the next ball.

And yet one cannot impart topspin to a cueball with a cue, such a feat is physically impossible. Does anyone disagree?

Yes they can.

You hit the top of the whiteball.

It isnt rocket science.

of course it works

All hitting the top of the white ball does, Mr Eboue, is to start the cueball rolling naturally.

It does not have any extra forward rotation over and above this roll.

If you hit the top of the white one shot, and the middle of the white the next, both with the same power, the first one will roll further.

its not rocket science, its kinetic science

So why does the ball follow through much further than if the ball were hit centrally then?

Good evening Lozzy. :)

I can prove your statement is incorrect, sir.

So .. getting top spin by striking a tennis ball with a tennis racket in a certain way is also a fallacy?
By:

No, Starfish, putting topspin on a tennis ball definitely works of course.

Bottom spin is easier to understand, the white would not reverse direction after hitting the object ball without it..
By:

If yoy can put bottom spin on the white you can put top spin on it as well.

Table tennis .. top spin and back spin .. its the same.. its about where you're hitting the object ball, exactly the same as snooker ball and cue

Kevin: in most cases it does travel further. The exception being if the object ball is very close to the centrally struck white.

In these instances the cueball will be sliding when it strikes the colour. If the contact is head on the white will stop dead (think of curling stones sliding on a rink). The a contact is made at an angle, a sliding white will deflect at ninety degrees.

Backspin is possible. Topspin is not.

The comparison with tennis and table tennis is, forgive me, a poor one. In those games the ball is airborne when the spin is applied.

Kevin: I meant to type does not travel further. Sorry.

Yes, the medium of travel is the surface of the baize, not air, but it still rotates forward while its travelling

pokermonster is right I believe, we'd need a slow motion replay of a big "topspin" shot, but unless the ball spins faster so that one rotation of the ball leads to thee ball covering a distance shorter than it's circumference the ball is not spinning, just rolling sooner.

I'm sure if you dig around you will find some videos taken of a cue ball travelling after various sorts of spin have been applied. They puts spots on the cue ball so you can see what happens, they used to be used as a coaching aid.

As long as the cueball is rolling naturally (which will happen as long as the player does not strike below the centre point) the only factor that determines how far the white travels after contact is the angle of the contact and how hard one has hit it.

It is therefore pointless to try and apply a lot of topspin to the cueball by striking it near its top edge. You would just be increasing the chances of a miscue.

Depends how hard you hit the ball.
Hit it hard just below the middle and it stop dead when it hits the object ball
Its actually skidded all the way with a bit of back spin to stop it, when it hits.

Hit it above the centre hard its still skids but with topspin, so when it hits the object ball it continues to travel, How much depends on your skill.
You can judge it to an inch or two if you are good.

If you hit the white ball below the centre it creates backspin.

If you hit it above centre it creates top spin.

Not hard to understand.

There is a simple test that proves this point:

Start with the cueball on the brown spot and the blue on its own spot. These are the only two balls on the table.

First shot: Send the white into the blue at an (almost) full on collision, sending the colour up over the pink and black spots and back to baulk, coming to rest within two inches the baulk cushion. If the blue bounces back into the white, start again. This first shot should be played plain ball. Note where the white finishes.

Second shot: Replace the balls and try again using as much topspin as you can muster. You can even move it closer to the blue if you like. Keep trying until the blue finishes in the same place again; this is your proof that you have not struck the white harder than before. Note where the white finishes. It will be in the same place as with the first plainly struck shot.

The spin acts the other way when it hits the cushion

If you hit the white ball below the centre it creates backspin. Correct.

If you hit it above centre it creates top spin. Incorrect.

If you hit above centre it just starts the cueball rolling forward naturally. It does not have any extra rotation akin to a dragster spinning its tyres as starts moving down the track.

Taken from snooker website ............

TOP SPIN

By addressing the cue ball well above the middle, top spin will be added to the strength of the shot and will increase the distance the cue ball travels. It is a shot which should be in every player's armoury. Very many players today have never played Billiards and therefore don't realize what advantage top spin can give them. Some do not even make sure they raise their bridge to make sure they strike well above centre. Top spin is particularly useful when it is necessary to open a pack of reds. There will be more displacement with spin on the cue ball than without it.

I knew it would be a contentious issue Easter. :)

And I hoped it might start a lively debate, but the physics is sound, sir, I can assure you.

Put backspin on a ball and when it hits the cushion it comes of the cushion faster.

Put top spin on the ball and the spin has the opposite effect.

High Andrew. :)

That quote is almost entirely wrong sir. But whoever wrote it is in good company as most players, even exceptionally fine ones, do not realise topspin, as they understand the concept, is a fallacy.
