In these instances the cueball will be sliding when it strikes the colour. If the contact is head on the white will stop dead (think of curling stones sliding on a rink). The a contact is made at an angle, a sliding white will deflect at ninety degrees. |

The comparison with tennis and table tennis is, forgive me, a poor one. In those games the ball is airborne when the spin is applied. |

pokermonster is right I believe, we'd need a slow motion replay of a big "topspin" shot, but unless the ball spins faster so that one rotation of the ball leads to thee ball covering a distance shorter than it's circumference the ball is not spinning, just rolling sooner.

I'm sure if you dig around you will find some videos taken of a cue ball travelling after various sorts of spin have been applied. They puts spots on the cue ball so you can see what happens, they used to be used as a coaching aid.

As long as the cueball is rolling naturally (which will happen as long as the player does not strike below the centre point) the only factor that determines how far the white travels after contact is the angle of the contact and how hard one has hit it.
It is therefore pointless to try and apply a lot of topspin to the cueball by striking it near its top edge. You would just be increasing the chances of a miscue. |

Depends how hard you hit the ball.
Hit it hard just below the middle and it stop dead when it hits the object ball Its actually skidded all the way with a bit of back spin to stop it, when it hits. Hit it above the centre hard its still skids but with topspin, so when it hits the object ball it continues to travel, How much depends on your skill. You can judge it to an inch or two if you are good. |

There is a simple test that proves this point:
Start with the cueball on the brown spot and the blue on its own spot. These are the only two balls on the table. First shot: Send the white into the blue at an (almost) full on collision, sending the colour up over the pink and black spots and back to baulk, coming to rest within two inches the baulk cushion. If the blue bounces back into the white, start again. This first shot should be played plain ball. Note where the white finishes. Second shot: Replace the balls and try again using as much topspin as you can muster. You can even move it closer to the blue if you like. Keep trying until the blue finishes in the same place again; this is your proof that you have not struck the white harder than before. Note where the white finishes. It will be in the same place as with the first plainly struck shot. |

Put backspin on a ball and when it hits the cushion it comes of the cushion faster.
Put top spin on the ball and the spin has the opposite effect. |
