I'm a massive Blue Nile fan and the Starless album sounds excellent, I'll be downloading it promptly. Is it the same Chris Thomson that used to be lead singer in Mannfred Mann's Earthband or somebody else?

|
By:

Great Songs From 2016
6/ Radiohead - 'Present Tense' [A Moon Shaped Pool] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hgVihWjK2c Forgone the original for an exquisite live 'campfire' video, directed by P.T. Anderson in California a few months ago. Favourite track off the good, but not brilliant, Radiohead album from this year. Radiohead do Bossanova. --------------------------------------------------- 5/ 21 Savage (and Metro Boomin) - 'No Heart' [Savage Mode] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wtwpUwxQik [EXPLICIT warning] Bit of a controversial pick this, as hip-hop isn't the first choice of Chit-Chat. This is explicit, violent, druggy, arrogant and extremely deadpan (to the point of almost laughable) and should say nothing to a older, white, middle-class, sheltered bloke from England, but there's just something intriguing and original about it. --------------------------------------------------- 4/ Teleman - 'Düsseldorf' [Brilliant Insanity] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QN7YA4FO7TY Put on, put on your favourite song.....well this is one of them. Love this from first hearing it, at the beginning of the year. Imagine Kraftwerk trying to perform 'Don't You Want Me'. --------------------------------------------------- 3/ Solange - 'Cranes In The Sky' [A Seat At The Table] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0qrinhNnOM Beyonce, Beyonce, Beyonce.......well her sister has outshone the megastar, with this peach of a single. A sultry, exquisite voice, conveying how she tries to ease her struggles against modern life. A word for the spacious, but epic Soul production. --------------------------------------------------- 2/ Whitney - 'No Woman' [Light Upon The Lake] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGKN6qiDqnk Opening track from this Chicago band's debut album. Love the arrangement on this electronic piano, strings, horns and retro-70s layered electric guitar, but all thoroughly understated. --------------------------------------------------- 1/ David Bowie - 'I Can't Give Everything Away' [Blackstar] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZscv36UUHo 2016's major moment in music is still by far the death of David Bowie, 11 months on. One of the standout tracks from 'Blackstar' is his last ever song on album. Pro tip: The harmonica at the beginning is similar to 'A New Career In A New Town' from 'Low' and there's even a hint of Ronson/Ziggy guitar at the end. --------------------------------------------------- |

Great Songs From 2016
7/ King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard - People-Vultures [Nonagon Infinity] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6f78_Tf4Tdk Kicking up a gear here with a truly bizarre (but brilliant) song and video from this Australian psychedelic rock seven-piece band. Apparently an amazing live band, not yet picked up on by the press, this video is magnificent and hilarious --------------------------------------------------- 6/ Radiohead - 'Present Tense' [A Moon Shaped Pool] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hgVihWjK2c Forgone the original for an exquisite live 'campfire' video, directed by P.T. Great Songs From 2016
8/ The Monkees - 'Me & Magdalena' [Good Times!] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSOQyR7psSo Come back of the year for me was The Monkees album. Totally unexpected, but some brilliant tracks. Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, Andy Partridge, Weezer and others all helped with songwriting. This quiet, melodic song, with Michael Nesmith on vocals, is my favourite. --------------------------------------------------- 7/ King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard - People-Vultures [Nonagon Infinity] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6f78_Tf4Tdk Kicking up a gear here with a truly bizarre (but brilliant) song and video from this Australian psychedelic rock seven-piece band. I heard The Monkees - 'Me & Magdalena' for the first time earlier today. It's really rather good.
Two teenage brothers called The Lemon Twigs brought out an album called Do Hollywood which is just incredible. The influences are all very 70's and the fact that it's all been written and performed by teenagers is just ridiculous (in a good way of course) |
|
By:
Also check out Time Moves Slow by BadBadNotGood with guest vocals by Samuel T. Herring of Future Islands. It's a belter.
|
|
By:
Bookmarked the second song. Very good.

Returning to the Madchester / Baggy scene of the early 90s
The Mondays and the Stone Roses rightly took the plaudits for their classic albums, but possibly the greatest indie-dance crossover track was this rarely heard gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIWfZtb4VCQ Paris Angels - All On You (Perfume) 12" |

1960s and Earlier
Today marks the 40th anniversary of the passing of the legendary Elvis Presley. In 1962 Bob Dylan recorded a demo of 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' and 4 years later Elvis covered it, due to his love of it. It eventually appeared on the soundtrack album 'Spinout' Dylan is quoted by Rolling Stone, that Presley's version of 'Tomorrow Is a Long Time' was the cover of one of his songs that he 'treasured the most' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1KNB9KuDJ8 Spotify link http://open.spotify.com/track/79PoTBkb6jXtEigTpwzPod Elvis Presley - 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' (1966) |

1970s
Played, written and produced by the boys from Chic, this could be just 'Thinking Of You' (ft.Sister Sledge) One of the most magical intros in Pop history and a stunning bassline from Bernie Edwards, bizarrely charted here, 5 years after first being released. Quite underrated. 'Live' on Pebble Mill BBC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAe54eFGp1o Spotify Link http://open.spotify.com/track/7mimnm2QlSzW3J38FRMETP Sister Sledge - 'Thinking Of You' (1979) |

Willie Nelson's 1975 album 'Red Headed Stranger' is just sublime.
It's a demo concept album, close cousin to Springsteen's 'Nebraska' If you like that, seek it out. Here's 'Time Of The Preacher' https://youtu.be/Mf1w66uijqU |
