I'd like to meet Jake.
Never mind, there is boxing on BBC 2 today just after midday on Sunday Grandstand. Highlights of The Four Nations Boxing event in Dublin - 12:05 - BBC 2 |
|
By:
Hello Tommy, I shall have to pop downstairs to watch that.
|
|
By:
Hello AITL. I'm expecting some of the lads that they showed in some amateur bouts recently on BBC to be boxing in this too. Some of them very pretty good. Especially the liverpool lads, I seem to remember.

My WEETABIX are awaiting my arrival in the lounge.
Off now, back later. |
|
By:
See you later, AITL.
They are also having an interview with Amir Khan on Sunday Grandstand. |

The boxing is on now.

A very enjoyable programme was that.
I especially liked Darren Sutherland from Ireland fighting at middleweight. He's got a great right on him. He could go a long way in the fight game. Nice bloke too. |

Not a bad hours entertainment.
I watch these with the volume off so I don't get misled by commentators. 48 kg class Nasir (Wales) v Moore (Ireland) It's blindingly obvious who Nasir models himself upon, but this kid, despite winning quite cosily, has major defence problems imo. He's fast on his feet, there's no doubt about that. But when he changes direction while ' floating' he leaves his arm trailing in mid-air, which is something the Greatest never did. If he wants to reject the rule book in a similar manner and fight with dropped hands, he MUST keep his elbows tucked in so that when he moves from skipping left to right or vice versa, his arms are already covering his rib cage, and are ready to move up to cover his face. I suppose he's well fancied for the Commonweatlh Games, and imagine he will be odds-on for his fights. He took 5 punches that I saw, that in the 'pro' ring ring with no helmet, would have put him on the deck, and maybe even knocked him out. I think I'll take a small interest in his opponents in the latter stages as I can see a hard puncher catching him in the Commonwealth Games, unless he improves that defence a lot. Others comments later. |

Took longer to type than the bleedin' fight lasted...lol
|
|

It was worth it though, AITL!
Very good summary. I know the Scots lad was completely out classed by Sutherland, never the less, he (the Irish bloke) looks very good. |
|
By:
By the way, AITL,
The film: Gangs Of New York is on Ch4 at 10pm tonight. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to watching it later. |

Saw it some time ago Tommy, not a bad film overall, but De Caprio can't play tough imo.
On with the lunchtime boxing, miles behind...lol, had to do some serious packing today. 57 Kg CLASS Smith (SCO) V Hickey (IRE) Missed most of this fight due to my Mrs having an emergency. The selotape had gone missing !!!! 64kg CLASS Cox (Eng) v Niven (Ire) This was a great fight, only marred by both fighters 'losing' 2 points each. Both did well on the attack and counter-punching. Overall, I think Cox looked a shade better boxer, but the Irish boy knuckled down after his 'deduction' and showed more aggression, and it paid off, nicking the decision by 1 point. 75Kg CLASS A virtual no-contest, Sutherland, pretty muscular for an amateur, and a very good boxer with a great right hand. As his opponent found out, being decked once, he got up, but didn't really know what day it was, and got smashed with a perfect overhand right. 91Kg CLASS Simmons (SCO) v Timms (IRE) Simmons, the better boxer, finished with his vest top covered in blood, but it wasn't his. Timms had his nose busted, if it wasn't beforehand, and even though he had a go it was 'writing on the wall time' from early on imo. One thing I noted about Simmons was that he had very 'deep set' eyes, and as is usual in cases like this, the bones behind the eyebrow protrude more than normal. A good boxer, but he may be prone to bad cuts later in his career when the helmet comes off in the 'pro' game. Solution, smear manure on his eyebrow to get thicker hair....lol 91kg plus CLASS The black fighter (can't recall his name) looked more like the 'pro' of the two, he moved well and had better moves overall imo. He never really bothered to try and use his obvious weight advantage until it was too late. Evans, no stranger to being hit judging by the state of his nose, did well to keep him at bay for so long. Overall, Nasir has the best prospects imo, but he needs to sort his defence out or forget the Ali mimicry altogether. |

An excellent report, AITL.
I think the black bloke in the Super Heavyweight division was named Derek Chazore - or something similar. Boxing on Channel 4 any time now (2:25) - KOTV - Boxing Magazine. |

Good programme, as usual.
They showed an old clip of Max Schmelling in the vintage slot, fighting when he was 23 years old. His opponent was named Uzcudun. They also did a piece on Frank Warren. It's his 25th anniversary since he got involved in boxing. Doesn't time fly... |
|
By:
Time flies like wind.
Fruit flies like bananas. |
|
By:
They do indeed, AITL!
|
|
By:
It's amazing how much Schmelling looked so much like Jack Dempsey.
|
|
By:
I remember watching a programme once about Max, and because he looked so much like Jack that when he first fought in America there were lots of publicity photographs taken of them together.

Saving.

Haven't read this so ttt.
|
|
By:
Just another thought about Max.
Although he was hailed by Hitler because he beat Joe Louis and therefore was thought to be a Nazi supporter and hated in America after the war, Max and Joe were always friends and Max helped Joe out financially when Joe was down on his luck in his latter years, after being treated disgracefully by the American tax man. |

I heard on the Four Nations Boxing coverage the other day, that Barry McGuigan's son has recently started his amateur career.
He knocked his opponent out in 12 seconds when he fought recently. One to keep an eye on, for the future. |

There is terrestrial Boxing on Channel 5 Friday night /Saturday morning.

I may be up for that.

Tonight's Boxing:
Ch5 - 01:50 - Fight Of The Week. |

It was a very good programme last night (early this morning).
It was a junior middleweight bout, recently fought between Ouma and Mora. Ouma was a much more skilful boxer (southpaw) and the ref stopped the fight when he'd floored Mora for the second time in the fight, in about the 8th round ( I was watching in bed, so I didn't note the round number) Teddy Atlas was one of the commentators and wisely made the point, when it was mentioned that Sugar Ray Leonard was the boxer that one of them had as their 'heroes', that Ray was admired by many of the boxers today, as he was one of the great middleweights fighting in the 80s who enjoyed world wide coverage on terrestrial tv, when the great sport of boxing could be followed by all, and it was rightfully recognised as being one of the best mainstream sports there is. As I've mentioned before, pay per view and satellite tv have done boxing no favours at all - in the greater scheme of things, in my view. |
|
By:
I forgot all about it, we watched a film on Sky and it slipped my mind.
|
|
By:
You'd have enjoyed it, AITL.
A good, hard fought match and excellent co-commentary by Atlas. They also had Bernard Hopkins - the former Middleweight Champ, join them at ringside for a while, talking about his recent defeat. It's a shame this programme was not shown earlier. Next Friday (Saturday morning) Ch5 are showing the two Ali v Cooper fights. Guess what time they are showing those great fights? 3am Absolute madness. |

Tonight's Boxing:

Missed it again.
|
|
By:
As usual, it was a very good programme.
On the vintage spot, they showed clips of the Tyson v Buster Douglas fight in Japan in Feb. 1990. Hasn't time passed quickly since that night 16 years ago, that saw the downturn in Tyson's career? |
|
By:
All time passes too quickly these days, Tommy.
Perhaps we should be born old, and as we learn more we get younger, and with increased stamina, strength and intelligence, we make a better job of our 3 score years and 10. |
|
By:
A very good idea, AITL.
|

My daughter aged 12 told me thus from maths at school.
When one is 2 a year is 1/2 of your life. 3 a third 4 a quarter 5 a fifth etc etc 40 a 1/40 thats why time seems to pass more quickly as one grows older. Makes sense :( |
|
By:
It does, Flan.
I've never thought of it like that before. I'm always saying 'a couple of years ago' - or the like, when, in fact, the event I'm referring to is many years before. |

are you a Stoke City fan Tommy, my team is B'ham, got them in the cup, at the weekend ?
