JACK JOHNSON ON - NOW !

|
By:
Joe Louis is on NOW.

Channel 4 - you are a disgrace.
Fancy putting a progamme on like this at such an ungodly hour! Jack's fight was in Havana Cuba April 5th 1917, where he fought Jess Willard for the World Heavyweight Ghampionship, which J.J. had held for 7 years. The fight was scheduled for 45 three minute rounds, in an outdoor arena, in blazing sunshine. Jess k.od Jack in the 26th round. As they only showed a few rounds and the film quality was poor, it was hard to see who was the rightful winner. Jess was a much taller and heavier fighter than Jack though. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Joe Louis was fighting Jim Braddock. Joe knocked Jim out cold, to begin his long reign as heavyweight champion. |

A very early reminder.
Next Saturday on Ch4 at 9:10pm they are showing the film with Will Smith - 'The Ali Story.' Looking forward to it. I remember when it was first released and Will said on an interview that Ali came to the studio when they were making it. He said to Will that he was doing a good job, but he was far too ugly to play him! I also seem to remember that Will had his ears taped back for the part, so he did resemble the great man a little. |
|
By:
I've never seen that film Tommy, so it's noted for next week.
|
|
By:
I haven't seen it either AITL, but I know it was highly acclaimed.
I remember Will was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal as Ali. It's a film that I really want to see. |
|
By:
AITL, I see our mutual friend has been eulogising about Audrey again.
I wonder if he thinks Ali would 'dare to take him on'....! |
|
By:
I shall look later Tommy

A quite brilliant retort AITL !!
I've just read it, it did make me laugh! |

Second fight was good......Rodriguez knocks out Smith.
Have you ever seen such nonsense as those stupid medics not allowing Smith up even though he was obviously quite ok. Stretchers, neck braces, the works. Poor bloke just wanted to get up and go home. American overkill at it's finest. |

I will attend to him later Tommy.
There were people 'dissing' Muhammad Ali on the tennis forum. I added my opinion. (Federer greatest athlete' thread) Bill was there after me. |

Ok chaps.......ITV 2 - 10pm tonight.
Check out a boy you'll be hearing a LOT of in the next few years.......KEVIN MITCHELL. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With all the hype surrounding Olympic Silver Medallist Amir Khan another hot young prospect is ready to punch his way back into the spotlight. Super-featherweight star Kevin Mitchell is back! The power-punching youngster from Dagenham injured his left hand in April this year against Karim Chakhim that forced him to stay out of action. The injury was a re-occurrence of the one he sustained last December when he boxed Henry Janes that left him out of the ring until April. Following intense sessions of physiotherapy with sports specialists and plenty of rest, Mitchell has fully recovered and he is now raring to go for the new boxing season that will see him fight every month from September to December to make up for lost time. The first fight will be a six-round contest on Friday 23 September on the Sports Network/Debra* charity show at the Hilton Hotel Park Lane on the undercard of the Vacant English Welterweight title clash between Ross Minter and Matthew Hatton to be televised by ITV. "As any boxer will tell you sitting out because of an injury is the most frustrating thing in the world. I was desperate to go to the gym and train and wanted to fight but I couldn't because every time I hit the heavy bags or sparred my hand blew up to twice it's normal size." Said the unbeaten 20-year-old. He continued, "No disrespect to my last three opponents but had my hand been okay they would not have lasted the distance with me. It was good experience going the distance and getting the rounds in but at this stage of my career I want to be blasting them out of there early and really making a name for myself," Prior to the injury, Mitchell was blitzing his way through the division that saw him in action nine times last year with six KO's and he is ready to resume that work schedule again. Mitchell, who won the ABA Senior title at his first attempt at 18, added, "After seeing a specialist, who has also worked with Naseem Hamed, he put me on a special course of physiotherapy and I went away on holiday to get away from things. When I returned, I did do light work-outs like shadow boxing and skipping in the gym to keep my weight in check and fitness ticking over so I wasn't totally inactive but it was a frustrating time," His patience has paid off and now he is primed and ready for his big return. "Now I've been given the all clear I'm just so excited about returning in September and getting my career back on track. I'm just as excited as I was when I was preparing to make my professional debut. I feel great, my hands are fine and I'm punching and sparring with no problems. In fact I reckon I'm punching harder than before," He finished by saying, "I've spoken to my promoter Frank Warren and he's going to keep me really busy by fighting four times between now and Christmas with the possibility of a title opportunity. It's up to me now to get back into the spotlight and I aim to put in some real eye-catching performances to make people sit up and take notice. Mitchell's back!" |

I just wish I had ITV2, KQ - Good luck to him for this evening.
|
|
By:
KQ - I asked Janiceland (works for an independent bookie apparently) for a price about him winning the world title inside two years.
Still waiting for a reply. |
|
By:
I must add - It's very sad news today about Leavander Johnson. May he rest peacefully.
I replied earlier AITL, after I saw your link, on 'Hardest men' thread. |

As we agreed before Tommy, sportsmen know the risks before they start, but it's still not nice.
|
|
By:
It's not.
Once again it shows it to be the toughest sport to succeed in. Everytime you go into that ring you risk losing your life. As do jockeys and racing drivers. It's a tragedy when one gets killed. However, their families usually say afterwards that they knew the risks and wouldn't have lived any other way - as happened last week at the TT on the Isle of Man when a young motor bike racer got killed, and when Johnny Owens (?) - think his nickname was 'Onions', a boxer, got killed some years ago. There was a great documentary about someone visiting the fighter who had been his opponent that night, on television a year or so ago. It was very moving. |

This was a farce Tommy.
Joihhny won that fight fair and square, he outboxed the Spaniard all night. http://www.johnnyowen.com/Rpts/owen/loss.html |

I remember seeing it in television, AITL, back in the glory days when live boxing was available to all.

Tommy, Johnnys opponent that fateful night was the Mexican, Lupe Pintor.
And the fate of another boxer wasn't far away. Taken from an article : In 2002 a statue of Johnny Owen was unveiled in his hometown. The guest for the opening ceremony was Lupe Pintor. A BBC documentary crew was there and the reunion between the great Mexican fighter and Johnnys family was so touching, as this beautiful act of forgiveness was played out for all to see. Pintor said that he would one day like to become a citizen of Merthyr Tydfil and when he died he wants a statue of himself next to that of Johnny Owen- inextricably linked for all eternity. The Mexican warrior carried on his career successfully after his fight with Johnny and in another cruel twist of fate, his next defence of the WBC title he held came against Alberto Davila, whom he beat on decision. Davila eventually became champion of that very belt three years later, his defeated opponent Kiko Bejines, died three days after the bout from head injuries. Here's the whole page if you want it. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=4693&more=1 |

Thank you AITL.
I'll have a read of that later. As I said previously, the documentry I saw about Owen and Pintor was very moving. As was the one about Michael Watson, showing his onward battle to recovery - where he met Chris Eubank and told him he should never blame himself for what happened. |

Cheers for the info KQ. Will he go for a world title at his current weight or could he move up? Not got ITV2 so i don't know what his plans are.Thanks.

He's a super featherweight but as he's maturing he's getting heavier.
Hope he gets to fight Amir Khan one day in the not too distant future. Will do AITL. |
