I agree TT. Now i know that this may upset a few people ,but why is there so much poker on tv?I'm sure its a great game to play but its just not a spectator sport.Put the popular spectator sports on earlier please!
By:
Poker isn't a sport..........along with darts, tiddlywinks and snooker it's a bloody game.
By:
I agree KQ,the poker seems to be on all the time and i've only got the 5 channels. I don't CARE who wins cuz its not my cash, and i expect many poker players don't either.Boxing earlier please!
By:
I agree that boxing should be on earlier.
I don't play poker. |
By:
has anyone here boxed? if so what is your record? i know tgm used to box.
By:
Boxed as an amateur for Hartlepool Catholic Boys Club. I was bobbins. Have got women's hands and used to hate getting whacked on the nose.
By:
As some of us said to topcat before his first fight, if you get over that, you can't wait to get back in again. Your nose is no problem, it's your eyes you need to worry about.

I couldn't stay awake on Wednesday night so missed the other classic fight on Ch. 4 at 04:35
Did anyone else see it? |
By:
Did anyone?
By:
I would've TT but i couldn't find out what the bout was so i gave up.
By:
Sadly Tommy, I was in a deeper sleep than Herol Graham by then.
:-( |
By:
It was a fantastic punch that Julian Jackson delivered to Graham's chin to flatten him with, I must say.
I wonder what became of Errol? |
By:
*Herrol*
By:
Last i heard TT he was trying to punch his way out of a paper bag! Only kidding, he had the skills but couldn't punch. Kirkland Lang was a much sadder story.
By:
Herrol was a superb fighter. 48 wins from 54 pro fights.
Ask Eubank and Benn, neither would fight him. Goodness knows what he's up to nowadays. |
By:
I've heard him on some of the classic fights, co-commentating, but as they were about 10 years ago
it 's strange he disappeared from the scene. I thought he was a very good boxer too. Very fast. |
By:
Benn avoids Graham but takes on McClellan! Don't see the logic there KQ.
By:
Benn's manager at the time, Peter De Freitas was on record as saying they wouldn't be fighting Graham as 'It was not in their best interest'
The truth is they were both (Eubank and Benn) not good enough as boxers to be TOTALLY sure they could beat him. |

Good news for fight fans, KOTV is on Ch.4 Sunday night, at 03:30 - shame it clashes with Ch.5 baseball.
Looks like I'll be channel hopping again. |

After googling earlier on - re the Audley Harrison thread on 'Other Sports' forum.
This link will be of great interest to all fight fans. Scroll down to the bottom to read Jack Johnsons career record. Click the link at the bottom of the page to access his 'Hall O Fame' write up. http://www.hickoksports.com/biograph/johnsonjack.shtml |

I posted a small piece last year about my top 7 heavyweights of all time Tommy, it was before you joined us.
J.J. was included. If you want to see the post let me know, but it may be a repeat of what you have already read. I've had another go at MB on other sports and that chump Audrey btw. |
By:
AITL, I would love to read your post.
I also agree with your points on the other thread. It makes me wonder sometimes, just what people these days consider great boxers/fighters..they can't have seen many of the old 'Greats' on their TV or videos. |
By:
Amazing to think that Jack was still knocking people out at 50...
He hardly ever trained either. Imagine what fighting him would have been like, if he had! |
By:
tyson v givens
i hindsight finished tysons career. |
By:
AITL, I'm afraid the bloke on the other thread still doesn't 'get' what you are trying to point out for him.
Just like he didn't earlier, with my point of view. Perhaps he's only ever seen Harrison! - Now you would have to feel sorry for him, if that's the problem. |
By:
MB must be a wind up merchant Tommy, it's a simple as that.
Nobody could be that thick, could they ? Better finish the quiz questions now, only 35 minutes to go. |
By:
AITL,
As he has not replied on my point about Primo Carnera yet, I can only think you must be correct on your assumption. We will have to see, tomorrow. |

THE TOP 7 OF HEAVYWEIGHTS OF ALL TIME IMO
WILL ALWAYS BE NUMERO UNO IN MY BOOK Muhammad Ali - fight record 56-5. Main interrupted Pro-career lasted from 1960 to 1978. Lost to Larry Holmes in 1980, and Trevor Berbick in 1981. SHORT CAREER - BUT NO ARGUING WITH THAT RECORD. Rocky Marciano - fight record 49-0. (Lost his first amateur contest for foul play - disq.) Pro career lasted from 1947 to 1955. His frst 'name' fight was when he beat Joe Louis. (Beat Ali in a film/computer fight by T.K.O. in 1970) BEATEN FOR 2ND IN A PHOTO Joe Louis - champion from 1937 to 1949. Fight record 68-3. Main Pro-career lasted from 1934 to 1949, but banned from fighting when in the U.S.Army. Lost the Crown to Ezzard Charles in 1950. Had eight more wins then retired after Rocky Marciano knocked him out in October 1951. Mike Tyson - fight record 50-5 and 2 no contests. Main Pro-career lasted from 1985 to 1996, then only 11 more fights to date. What can you say ? An explosive puncher with great hand speed. Except for being a prize idiot (and I cleaned that up !!) could have been the greatest heavyweight of all time. A true waste of talent. Lennox Lewis - fight record 41-2-1. Pro-career lasted from 1989 to 2004, But a bit boring to watch imo. Larry Holmes - fight record 69-6. Pro-career lasted from 1973 to 2002, with first big name fight n 1978. His last fights against any 'names' were Evander Holyfield in 1992 and Oliver McCall in 1995. He lost both. |

A BRIEF HISTORY OF JACK JOHNSON
Born 31st March 1878. Fight record 79 wins, 8 losses, 12 draws and 14 'no-decisions'. In a truly amazing career he had his first fight at the reputed age of 15. He won the ' Coloureds Heavyweight Championhsip' at 25, as whites refused to fight him. Fought the UKs Bob Fitzsimmons in 1907, and knocked him out in round 2. He won the World Heavyweight Championship, deemed a TKO, somewhat controversially, after 14 rounds, when the police stopped the fight against Tommy Burns (World Champ at 5 feet 7 inches tall btw), appropriately on Boxing Day, in Australia in 1908. He then fought white hopes. He beat Victor McLaglen (The ugly one in the film The Quiet Man). On American Independence day in 1910, he beat James Jeffries in the 15th round, with a crowd of over 20,000 that sparked race riots. He was paid over $100k for that fight. Some states refused to show film of him beating a white boxer. Arrested for diamond smuggling in June 1912. Arrested again in October for taking Lucille Cameron, a white woman, across state lines. He then married her. Went to trial in 1913 and was fined $1k, and sentenced to serve a year and a day in prison. He hopped it from the States while out on appeal. He continued fighting, but in 1915, just after his 37th birthday, he was knocked out in the 26th round of a scheduled 45 rounder, (amazing or what ?) by Jess Willard in Cuba. Returned to the USA IN 1920, gave himself up to the FBI and served just under a year in prison. He divorced Lucille in 1924, and then married Irene Pineau. His marriages to white women enraged many white people at the time. Was always rumoured to have thrown the Willard fight after he supposedly 'cut a deal' with lawyers, to be able to visit his mother who was ill, without being arrested. Killed in a car crash in 1946 in North Carolina, and buried in Chicago, it took a further 8 years for him to be included in the Boxing Hal Of Fame. Klitcshko, Byrd, Williams, that useless lump Harrison, and anybody else out there, shouldn't even be in the same book as these boxing greats. ======================================================== Goodnight Tommy. |

Tonight's boxing:
Ch.4 - 03:30 - KOTV - Boxing magazine. As I will be watching baseball any time soon, I probably won't be able to give this thread a lift at that time. |

Got it now JJ
By:
An excellent couple of posts, AITL.
I agree with you on practically everything you say, but I think JJ may have had the beating of anyone he faced. It's a shame that we will never know. |
By:
Thanks for posting those, AITL.

The antihistamine pill knocked me out whilst I was watching baseball in bed.
