AM I TOO LATE
When: 09 Aug 05 07:12
Hello lads, I wasted my time watching those two fights last night. Imo, Pierre, the black fighter in the middleweight scrap, was useless, AND HE WON !!. Ralston, the white geezer, had a strange plan. Land five punches, take seven in return. The winner was so sloppy he was a joke, he looked more like John Wayne in a bar brawl than a boxer. From the same camp as Tyson I think they said, I know he comes from the Catskill mountains. I've never seen Jermain Taylor box, but as the reigning champ, after seeing these two, I don't think he should lose any sleep. Pierre was aggressive, but had nowhere near the hand speed Tyson had, and every time he missed with one of those wild lunges (I gave up counting at 50) he looked bad.

Not championship material at all.

The heavyweight fight was a bit better, but not much.

It looks like the days of being a hungry fighter are gone....lol.

Clay-Bay weighed in at 18 stones 4, Bryant at 15 stones 2. Clay-Bay was obviously unfit, and would have easily disposed of a man 3 stones lighter if he had the stamina. Bryant looked awkward, as southpaws do, but in a clinch kept wasting energy tapping Clay-Bays rib area, (certainly not his actual ribs, they were buried under two stones of fat).

From round 2 it was always going to go the distance. Bryant ain't good enough to start beckoning a fighter in with a glove, and standng there poking his tongue out.

If The Greatest was watching this I think he'd turn it off after 2 rounds.

Clay Bay looked to be the harder puncher, and if he lost 28 pounds and got fit he could be a bit tasty as he has fairly fast hands.

As for either of these two getting a shot at the title, if it happens, I'm getting me gloves out....lol

AITL - I've only just read this.

You could have been reading my mind, when typing the above.

As usual, I still managed to see most of the 05:05 'classic fight'.
That was better fare, altogether - A World Championship bout between cruiserweights; Vasily Jirov ( title holder) and J.F. Castro. Don't know from which year it was, but was pretty recent, I think.

Jirov won by majority decision and it was a fairly good display by both boxers.
However, Castro was carrying excess weight, and being the smaller man, it obviously hindered his performance.
I'd like to know; what are the trainers allowing them to eat these days?
Or is it, like most things in life now, that younger people will not take any notice of sensible advice?

I noticed quite recently when the lad who fought for the title recently, live on ITV, Ricky Hatton,
was a guest at the Khan fight, it looked as though he'd put about 1 & 1/2 stone on , since the fight, about 2 or so months before.
He's only a lightweight, so how can that be any good for him when he'll be defending his title quite soon, if reports are to be believed?
After his recent title v ictory, I heard him being interviewed the next morning in McDonalds. He said he'd been dying for a cheeseburger!
Apparently, he goes there every day for his breakfast, and I think they said, he'd been for it on the morning of his match.
Now, he seems like a very nice lad, but I don't think his eating plan is to be advised. It's a tough division, at the moment and he will surely rue the day he cast eyes on 'the golden arches', if it proves his downfall.
He's probably too young to recognise this presently, but a boxer's career is pretty short and you're a long time retired.

I hope his training team make him see; that to be the best, you have to supply your body with the correct nutrition for most of your career.
It's okay pigging-out, on junk food once in a while, but not regularly - especially if you are one of the lighter weights.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, I can hopefully assure all Ali fans, that KOTV is on at 03:45 (!) - Thursday - CH.4

The great British telly viewing public.

Big Brother at peak time viewing, and 'The Greatest' demoted to 3 in the morning.

And people wonder why I don't watch much telly.

I give up.

hey all,

i agree, tommy, hatton's between-fight regime is a strange one. does it all the time tho so doesn't seem to affect him too much. until he runs into mayweather ;)

pity the ali section wasn't longer last night but any excuse to see him will do.

i'm rediscovering my love of boxing recently. hopefully ustv has got fed up with multiple 'champions'
and it'll get back to how it was - one champ, eight divisions! seriously, i have no real problem with diluted weight divisions but there should only be one champ.

Easter, couldn't agree with you more - on all points.

Great stuff on Ali last night - I had to go to bed as I was so tired, but switched the tv on at 3:45 in my bedroom, (very rare for me, unless Ch5 have baseball on).

The man really was so special.
Thought Bert Sugar's voice-over comment at the end was wonderful.

i agree tommy, loved the bert sugar 'old men' comments too. now i'll bore you a moment if you don't mind.

my missus is american and govt kicked her out. so to get her back we had to get married. we agreed on las vegas early in january. 1st week of jan was out due to numerous reasons. so we decide on 2nd week in jan. my missus wants to get married on a friday for some reason, i acquiesce.
so jan 10th 2003 was the date. until i start thinking - ali's birthday is the 17th. so i got my missus to put our wedding off for a week so i could get married on my hero's birthday. we shoulda invited him!

Cheers topcat.

I'm on a ban at the moment in my name and keeping quizzes to a minimun for a month while I put together a very long post about 'The Greatest.'

Campoisgod should be back by the end of the month, that's when it should be ready. TGM will not return, neither will his predecessor. AITL name goes back to its West Ham fanatic owner when Campo comes back.

Meanwhile, I may open a few more just to confuse the issue.

At least I got one correct out of two tonight, AITL - things are looking up!

Tonight's boxing:

Ch.4 - 01:10 - KOTV.

Marvellous.
When the Ali segment was on, I had to stay awake until 03:45. Tonight's show is on at just after 1 am - and it clashes with baseball on Ch.5!
Anyone know who the halfwits are who do the progamme schedules?

When: 16 Aug 05 08:56
Hello Tommy, I watched the boxing instead of going to bed.

When your all time idol is you know who, it's hard to watch the plebs trading punches with any enthusiasm.

In the light-heavyweight fight, Tony (blue trunks) was obviously the more experienced boxer. Lumbwala (black trunks) was no match for him. Even though Tony was knackered after round 6, and getting angry because he couldn't deck the Ugandan, he could not really handle his style effectively. He definitely had the harder punch, and the few times he caught Lumbwala off balance with a body shot he knocked him halfway across the ring. If he had handled the style of Lumbwala, and hit him on the head with a combination, he would have probably knocked him down.

Lumbwala is not going to impress many people when he turns his shoulder against a punch and flinches.

Can't decide what was the most laughable moment, Lumbwala doing a very bad copy of the 'Ali shuffle' in rounds 5, 7 and 8 or when he threw his arms into the air at the final bell to signal victory. If he had got the verdict it would have been the judges guide dogs fault as there's no judge on earth could have given hm the win.

As for the featherweight match, if I had been the refereee the white bloke would have been out of there inside 4 rounds. I turned it off after round 4, Oliver was miles in front on my card. He was composed, had fast hands, and was never going to get beaten.

As for the white bloke, you don't mind a bit of leaning, even though it's generally confined to the heavyweights, but he should take up wrestling. Very unprofessional showing by him imo.

Thanks for that AITL, as you may have seen, I'd got the wrong channel on the tv, whilst waiting for the boxing, so missed nearly all of it.
Typical!
I know what you mean about some of the fights/boxers these days. I think I must have been spoiled as a kid, when watching Ali, and all the other greats who were about then.
That show does offer a look some pretty decent fighters sometimes. I think it was last week that a good middleweight or light heavyweight contest was on.
Just wish the programme times weren't so haphazard, and I remembered to switch to the right channel !

We haven't got Sky
.

But enjoy 'The Greatests' boxing masterclass yourself.

Dancing round, mostly clockwise to keep away from that left hook, he made Sonny look stupid.

It was after this fight that he changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

Thanks all the same though for the alert Tommy.

AITL, I have seen this fight a few times, fortunately. I'll still be tuning in again though. As you say. a masterclass.
Do you need Sky in your area to watch Ch.4 ? If so, I'm sorry, I didn't know that.

I must be blind, I saw KOTV and assumed it was a Sky channel.

Reception is rubbish on 3,4, and 5 here, but okay on BBC 1 AND 2.

For the amount of telly we watch, Sky is not worth the cost.

Not allowed to have aerials on the roof - council regulations.

Somebody told me to get some sort of flat aerial, fits on the wall.

I have no idea what he was on about.
