I've just seen on the news that Trevor Berbick has been killed today in Jamaica by an assailant wielding a hatchet or machete.
He was the last man to fight Muhammad Ali. After holding the the heavyweight title briefly in 1986, he lost it to Mike Tyson. |
By:
Just about to post the same Tommy. Tyson won the title off him I think it said.
Shocking news. |
By:
Tyson did win it from him, Canny. A lot of boxers meet with unlawful violent ends, unfortunately.

True Tommy. I was watching the ESPN Channel (442 on Sky) the other day. They were featuring Freddie Mills, world light heavyweight Champion in the early 50's. After retirement he became a friend of the Kray's and ended up being shot in the head.
You must get Sky Tommy. The ESPN Channel is fabulous entertainment. Loads of old sporting action of all sorts. I know you've a problem with Murdoch, but overcome it. You'll LOVE it. Guaranteed. -:) |

I know about Freddie, Canny. There was a very good documentary about him many years ago.
Another famous boxer to meet with a grisly end was Oscar Banavena. He was a terrific heavyweight in the 60s and gave Frasier a real match. Ali beat him pretty compehensively, but he if Bonavena was fighting today, he'd probably be world champ. He was found shot dead in a car park in Las Vegas after getting entangled with 'the mob'. I'm still holding out against Murdoch. Someone has to! |

Oscar Banavena, I remember him Tommy. Didn't know about the grisly incident though. I was watching a documentart on ESPN the other day about Rocky Marciano. Another one to die tragically but not in a sinister way. Seemed a very, very nice bloke.
By:
From what I've seen of him, it seemed like it, Canny.
Strangely enough, I've probably seen less of Marciano on classic fight shows than any other. |
By:
Marciano was a great fighter, well obviously. Not much more than 13 stones, but his relentless agressive style probably bought him a stone. It was very interesting to see the programme the other day, as like you Tommy, I'd not seen much footage of him.

Did I hear that right on the news then? Trevor Berbick ,the last guy to beat Ali,has been killed in a machete attack?
By:
See my post @23:30, JP
By:
Sorry TT.How some of these guys end up is truly shocking.
By:
It certainly is, JP.
I'm afraid boxing really is a tale of triumph and tragedy. |

It's good Kevin Mitchell is being recognised on here. It was Kq who first mentioned his ability.

Good articles, by the way, Stewarty.

They're showing "Foreman the early years" on ESPN, 442 on Sky. What a terrific Channel this is.
By:
He's fighting a guy called Gillick in 1972. that's what I like about this Channel. It brings back to life fights you'd forgotten all about, or in many cases weren't aware that they had happened. Doesn't just concentrate on the well known events.

Eubank v Sherry from 1991 on ESPN at midnight.
I used to make a decent extra income backing Eubank to win on points. Can't remember how this one went. |
