Actually what I meant to say Tommy, was that boxing would be only pay per view after the tragedy. I've googled this.
Prior to the weigh-in for the third fight with Griffith, Paret taunted Griffith and, according to a Sports Illustrated article of April 2005 hissed at him: "Maricn (a Spanish insult meaning "**ot"), I'm going to get you and your husband." Griffith flew into a rage and tried to go after his opponent before friends restrained him. The fight was a seesaw battle, and Paret actually knocked Griffith down in the sixth round. Griffith struggled to get to his feet, but eventually was able to regain his composure. In the twelfth round, Griffith unleashed a barrage of 18 unanswered punches that left Paret defenseless against the ropes. Paret fell into a coma and died ten days later. Referee Ruby Goldstein was blamed by many for not stopping the fight soon enough after a spent Paret fell into the ropes but became entangled, unable to fall and helpless against Griffith's fusillade. Paret died on April 3, 1962 as a result of the injuries he suffered in the fight. As a result of the tragic outcome, boxing would not be seen on free TV for the ensuing ten years. Paret had a lifetime record of 36 wins (11 knockouts), 12 losses and 3 draws. The fatal bout and its effects on Emile Griffith's career and life are the subject of the documentary "Ring of Fire." |

Send an e-mail to Aspirin on the ALL NEW CHITCHAT PHOTO thread.
He'll forward it to him, and then you get a reply. Alternatively, if you know the shop he works for in Newham, he's down there this Saturday. |

We watched it last night. Not bad entertainment. Learned a few things I never realised. |

A reminder of the update on kq.
cannyman 30 Jun 12:37 kq, aka**ney Banker, rex oedipus, cupid stunt and nobby cheese. Barred from forum as I said, kept drifting over to footy forum, getting wound up and ending up being barred on several occasions. Still looks in but nowhere near as often as he did, used up all his credit cards on new accounts here. Knows AITL, in fact has been in your bookies TGM In Canning Town. The stories I could tell about him, kq said. He's aware you've legged it up to Norfolk and says you've done right. He can't wait to get out of this effing hole. In fact his conversation is littered with expletives but he's a good laugh and would be a great bloke to share a pint with from what I can gather. More to come but need to check some trading I'm doing. Right 2 months later, doesn't time fly? Can't find my notes but I do recall kq telling me that he's leaving this effing school playground and going to Spain in November (permanently) He's currently living in a caravan in Essex most of the year, the remainder he's in London. He's depressed with this Country and can't wait to get out. He's on decent medication now and the change will do him good. He's heading for Calpi on the Costa Blanca 40 miles from Benidorm. Sorry Tommy, think there was a bit more but that's the bulk of it. |
|
By:
Better late than never, Canny!
Kq was a good forumite (like AITL) who is much missed because of a life ban. I wish him well and hope everything goes smoothly for him in his move to Spain. |
|
By:
He said there was a web cam on Calpe which there is. But don't go there. I thought I'd got a virus, screen went black and I 've spent 20 minutes trying to sort it out.
They were talking about kq on footy forum a couple of weeks back. Something to do with his football tips. Not very complementary either. lol.Don't know whether he's posting on the forum under yet another name, or what. Didn't he give tips out at one stage? lIs AITL coming back Tommy or was it a life ban? |
|
By:
Canny, Kq posted via an internet cafe with a web cam in Spain, when he was over there last year. It was a good laugh.
I've also been having problems with my screen fading out, or going black, for a minute or two recently. I've no idea what's going on. I'm afraid AITL is on a life ban and I don't think he'll be back. He posted on a friend's account once or twice, and was grassed again. The place goes downhill everyday. |
|
By:
It does Tommy, I'd be lost without it though.
What am I going to do in 3 minutes when the site goes down for 12 hours. -:) |
