i think they should retain the specialist element of the quiz so lomng as its not too obscure

The Bible? Jesus!
(excuse the pun)
TBF, I thought the 'decision' was made to stop people from having mega-narrow subjects like, famously, 'Keeping Up Appearances' for example. I reckon you should stay anyway - you seem a good laugh/sound character.

id have gone for aformat of

home player has 3 q,s on specialist sub away person gets 4 gk questions

that would open it up as well as retaining the specialist element

but no they just want to dumb it down and make sure that Nirvana et al wins it all

TBF Drag, why not stay in the league anyway & set up a league or cup of your own? I'm sure a lot of people would be interested. There seems to be at least 2-3 quizzes every day at the mo.

Chad - I've not got that far yet mate tbh so I can't help there - although I guess I'd look at 'obscure places' like names of odd churches/weird architecture & for 'people' just kind of record-breakers for unusual stuff maybe?

Drag - mate, whatever you do stay on the forum cos it needs you!

Dragon, the changes that are being made are ones that we don't have much choice about really if the Leagues are going to continue.

Most of the specialist subjects were far too narrow and a nightmare to set questions for. And yet a handful of UNPAID volunteers were expected to give up hours and hours of their spare time in order to research and come up with upwards of 50 suitable questions for each narrow subject. And inevitably it got to the stage where the setters were struggling and a lot of questions were appearing which some Home players found unacceptable.

It happened to me too. "Who played bass on a particular Manfred Mann song?" Can't remember which one. To me that was a specialist Manfred Mann question, not a specialist 60s Pop Music question. But I gave the answer anyway of Manfred Mann's regular bass player which to me was well worth a goal. But it turned out to be wrong. The answer was someone who was in Manfred Mann for 5 minutes and only played on that one track. Ridiculous question. A case of a question setter trying to be clever and catch me out and thereby stop me scoring - and it worked! And that wasn't an isolated case where I thought the question didn't fit the brief. There were loads of them.

But that's what happens with specialist subjects. Question setters interpret the brief in their own way and set questions accordingly. As a player you have to accept it. The few question setters responsible for doing all the work did a fantastic job overall so it's hardly surprising that a lot of them got peed off with players moaning. It's a mammoth a thankless task, and we lost quite a few question setters along the way. We all agreed that we weren't prepared to give up a disproportionate amount of our time for the next season just to entertain everyone else.

So basically, for someone like yourself who thinks there should be no changes to the format, there'd be no more Leagues for you to take part in because there'd be no-one left to run them.

If the Leagues are going to be sustainable then everyone has to play a part in making it work. And the extreme specialisation has to be toned down a bit because there's no-one left who's willing to devote so much time to setting the extreme specialist questions. Unless you'd like to do it all of course?

So I suggest you wait until the new format is announced in a week or two before criticising the admin team who are simply doing their best to keep the Leagues going with a sustainable format for the future.

thanks for your comments MOMM

i c were y are coming from but surley there is acompromise
despite what you say the leagues were a amazing sucess and you should not confuse the format issue with the workload issue which is what you are doing

i bit of heallthy cririsism never hurt anyone and i have never understood why the admin team take my comments so personally

i think u have now dumbded down the leagues , lost its uniqueness and turned it into another general k quiz league

but hey thats just what i think!!

I have to agree with The Dragon on this one. The specialist subjects were great. I'm sorry that they have gone but I can fully understand why.

The specialist subjects haven't gone. They've just been toned down to reduce the Home advantage a bit and make the question setting an easier task for all concerned. You haven't been told yet what the new format will be and yet you're voicing opinions about it!

The new format IS a compromise but I can assure you it won't be a General Knowledge quiz because none of us wants that. But it's not finished yet, so I suggest you all wait and see.

Drag -- I think people are getting a bit carried away at mo ..
not helped by the Post that is still to come on "what" the new format on Home Q's will take ..
We had to get away from "very niche" subjects like West Wing ....and ..Hollyoaks and Aesops Fables ...giving a player NO chance of answering ..and having an unfair advantage over Players with say History or Geography as their subject ..
But in taking away the extremist subjects , there is STILL plenty of scope for Home subjects selection ...
I do NOT want yet another GK quiz ...you know that ...but nor do I want 54 totally obscure "niche" home subjects ..such as ..
The Rantings of the Sultan Maddrag III 1572 - 1604 . :^0
Lets see what comes out ...and reserve judgement until then eh ...
