POlice can never be trusted imo. Even though dna is 100% or whatever reliable. Doesn't stop the police planting DNA.

a person with an illness was found to be insane at the time of the incident due to illness

He wasn't found to be insane. If he had been insane he would have been locked up in a mental hospital. He was found not guilty because no crime was committed. Just an unfortunate accident while he was asleep.

Police planting dna is more acceptable that a baddun get in off on a mental card to cause problems for genuine innocents.

Oh the irony if one of you ever finds yourself in a similar situation, safe in the knowledge that a gambling website forum are declaring you 'guilty'.

How sweet that would be!

This mental illness malarkay I don't really get. Anyone who goes around killing and raping and stuff is by and large mentally ill by definition. But the public have to be protected. There are certain crimes that you should get life meaning life for imo. But not death penalty.

I don't really believe that people are born evil, they're pretty much a function of their upbringing and surroundings etc. The aims of the criminal justice system should be the following in this order imo:

1 Protect the Public
2 Deterrent
3 Punishment
4 Rehabilitation

Almost right. Take 3 out. Punishment is basically just revenge, which the state shouldn't really be sanctioning. In any case the deterrent part will in most cases be severe enough to satisfy those who want the convicted to be punished.

i know what you mean history. punishment = revenge. Why would I (or the state) want to punish someone who has murdered someone I don't even know.

Is a funny one, not sure where I stand on that.

i'm against the death penalty, canary. quite rightly we don't have to worry about it over here. they deal with stuff differently in other countries though and if you transgress you're at the mercy of less tolerant judicial systems than our own. no point saying what would happen here as he wasn't tried here.

incidentally, while i haven't really been following this, i understand the chinese don't accept that he was mentally ill. i'm not saying they are right, of course.

too many liberal tree huggers in this country now. if you go to another country you abide by thier laws and be punished accordingly if you break the law. the worst thing this country done was to stop birching people for offences
By:

Agreed, but not in the case of people who are mentally ill surely?
By:

When: 29 Dec 09 11:15
i'm curious, if you had a relative (father, uncle, brother etc) who was mentally ill to the point where he was dissociated with reality, would you be letting them travel alone to strange and unusual places? and then, when he gets arrested for a crime for which the penalty is death, make no contact for 2 years?

the whole thing beggars belief
By:

When: 29 Dec 09 11:15
well yes easter, i know they do things differently there, i was just making the point that certain justices take illness as a mitigating circumstance. something i agree with. i also believe this man should have had a proper assessment. the way he has reportedly behaved in the lead up to the smuggling is cause for concern imo.

So the British government made 12 appeals for clemency but were remiss enough not to send over the mans medical records which wouldve shown a medical condition.......tut tut
By:

and there is a point about saying what would happen here, because it doesn't mean that what happens elsewhere is right and should be accepted

an extreme i know, but we don't just accept what the nazis did because that's the way their government chose to behave.

not sure how easy it is to stop them sixofclubs. Youcan't put a family member under house arrest. And unless the gov't send them to the nuthouse, they can't either.

Just happy that the terrorist group Reprieve did not get this filth off, I'm still getting over that other fitlhy animal from Nigeria (she has a british passport) getting away with a bullet to the back of the head.

Are british passport's for sale in tesco? seems like every**bag has one.

first one is a danger to public, should be locked up for life imo no chance of parole, only released if you can prove he is innocent.

second one i'm not really sure tbh.

You're kidding right? You can argue that they're misguided liberals, but terrorists? They'll fight to get anyone with a British passport or residency off the death penalty anywhere in the world, regardless of the circumstances because they are emphatically against the death penalty.

not convinced

Just like Amnesty Intentional do not campaign against some EU nations in locking people up for many years for debating History. They will only defend if it is in their interests to do so

'debating history'.

LOL. You mean racists motivated by their racism falsifying evidence in order to fit their warped agendas?

Don't believe me?

David Irving sued Penguin. Unfortunately fabricating your bibliography doesn't look too good in a proper court of law. He lost.

Amnesty don't waste their money on people like that. Good for them!
