It would be a travesty if a horse like Vautour went for the Ryanair after Mullins stating all season that his target was the gold cup. Like choosing the Europa League over the champions league.

Have now backed him for Ryanair just in case, got him nr no bet Gold Cup at 10s and 8s, just want him to run in Gold Cup and find out.

I am far from surprised that Ruby will be trying to get Vautour in the Ryanair, but I doubt he will be successful.

Leaving that aside for a second, I would be absolutely flabbergasted if both Vautour and Djakadam run in the Gold Cup and Ruby chooses the latter. He loves Vautour and always has. He has won twice at the Festival from two runs, and nobody knows whether he'll stay or not.

Ruby has already lost a Gold Cup by choosing wrongly (the infamous Thommo question springs to mind: Do you wish you had chosen Denman?). Whenever the yard has more than one big player there is a risk that it could happen again but if he watched Djakadam come past him on a tiring Vautour I would bet the house that he'd get over that quicker than watching someone else sail away and win it on Vautour while he chases in vain on Djakadam.

Victoria Pendleton secured for Vautour.  Ruby rides Djakadam.

I think he should go for one of the championship races but definitely not the Ryanair.

Ah, no, I see now. Ruby made a joke and a few fools misinterpreted. For a moment, I thought common sense had prevailed.

He would look rather foolish if he chose Vautour over Djakadam, and Djakadam outstayed him, something some think will happen.
Less foolish if he chose a proven Gold Cup horse and that went wrong.
By:

When: 02 Mar 16 17:09
I don't think he'd look foolish either way. It's a tough choice as far as I'm concerned, but I think the fact that Djakadam fell at Cheltenham lto, sustained a cut and may possibly be hesitant early on back on the racetrack, makes things easier for him. I think he'd have picked Vautour anyway, due to the regard he holds the horse in. As has as already been suggested earlier, it'd just be far more painful to watch him win with someone else on board Tha it would be for Djakadam.
By:
buddeliea
When: 02 Mar 16 17:13
Be careful with heart ruling the head....if indeed for some reason he prefers one horse over another.
Should simply be a case of choosing the horse that he thinks has the best chance of winning the race.
Djakadam wins and Vautour don't stay,i for one will think him foolish.
By:

I'd imagine they'll leave it late. The softer it is the more his chances of running in the big one recede I'd think.

look like vautour runs in the Gold Cup................fantastic for all fans of racing,

VAUTOUR OR DJAKADAM IN THE GOLD CUP? IT'S A TOUGH CHOICE FOR RUBY...

A light-hearted comment at a Cheltenham preview night in the Keadeen Hotel seems to have come back to haunt me.

I said I was trying to persuade Willie Mullins to send Vautour to the 2m 5f Ryanair Chase rather than the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but it was just a bit of fun.

It was more a case of me trying to make my life easier as it’s probably going to come down to me choosing between Djakadam and Vautour in the Friday feature.

It would make things rosy in Ruby’s world if they don’t clash! But I can’t see it happening.

Unfortunately life isn’t that straightforward and I’ve still a decision to make on my Gold Cup mount. It was the same when I had to pick between Kauto Star and Denman when I was riding for Paul Nicholls.

I have been saying for ages he will go for the Ryanair and I can see no reason why he won't.

1) The stable have a live contender in Djakadam but nothing which is a shoe in the Ryanair.
2) In a championship race @ his optimum distance he will be slight odds on and should scoot in.
3) If he runs in the Ryanair and doesn't have too hard a race he will be able to go to Aintree/Punchestown for another lucrative G1 event.
4) The horse is only 7. A gruelling race over a trip too far could really bottom this horse out and affect his future.
5) The world and his wife including his Jockey (Walsh) can see he won't stay in a taxi.
6) Close connections are strongly hinting he goes for the Ryanair.
7) They will campaign him next season to see if he will get the GC (at best unproven currently) and potentially cement his legacy as a triple G1 winner @ different distances.

Over to you Mr Mullins..............

Well he has never ran over the distance,so their ain't any.
He ran over 3m and looked the winner till the last 100 yards though.
Make of that what you will.

Some good points there, for sure. Number 7 I can't have ever though. If he doesn't get the trip this year, he won't next year that's for sure. Would be a complete ar.se about face way of campaigning him and effectively wasting 2 years of his career.

My opinion is worthless in the grand scheme of things but if he doesn't go for the Gold Cup this year he never should, and in all honesty for the good of the game Ricci should put his foot down and tell him he goes for the Queen Mother. A horse of his talent is wasted in the Ryanair. It doesn't and never will hold a candle to either of the other two. Prestige is everything at Cheltenham.

Apologies for the borefest of the will he wont he stay argument, I haven't contributed much to it for a while now, but it's nearly here so yeah.
I'm still of the opinion he will go Gold Cup. Again I still think its ground dependant though. I'm currently 50/50 whether he will stay but leaning towards the he won't stay camp truth be told. But the fact is we still don't know that for sure, and I think if he stays he'll win. Take him GC and if it's clear he doesn't stay ease him down in the last couple furlongs, it would be unlikely to bottom him going about it that way. Then campaign him at 2 miles next year.

If he is played out at 2 and a half he's a nothing horse, will never go down as anything memorable. Harsh but very true. It's now or never.

And if you don't want him in the Gold Cup or to bump into Un De Sceaux, then him to the bloody Champion Hurdle, as he'll win that too!

Thing is at two and a half he could well be capable of very high ratings and impressive performances, achieve that is not a nothing horse in my eyes.
To try and make a horse do something out his comfort zone, just to achieve ones own ambitions is not the way to go with horses, especially ones as good as this one is.
Find his optimum, the one that he will produce his best at,and then you have a horse that is content and successful.
Whatever distance that may be.

Just heard on Talksport that Ricci said at a preview evening last night that Vautour either runs in the Gold Cup or stays in his box at Closutton.

End of debate, I would say.

Yes he did look the winner until the run in that day but remember cue card done the very same thing when silvo came and nabbed him! For his 1st try at 3m it was pretty good and remember how much better he is going at Cheltenham... Remember imperial commander would even place in the king geo but then rocked up and beat the 2 of best chaser I have seen at Cheltenham! Doesn't mean vautour will do the same but I think for his 1st go in a very good king geo it was a great run and they are quite right to go for gold. I think he is some horse but I'm personally with Don poli myself and cue card as a saver lol

Gold Cup the only option for Vautour, says Ricci
VAUTOUR looks likely to tackle the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup or stay at home, according to owner Rich Ricci.

Ricci hinted at a BetBright Cheltenham Festival preview evening in London on Wednesday that the other possibility of the shorter Ryanair Chase, one day earlier on March 17, was not going to be an option.

Ruby came out yesterday and said he was only having a joke about him going Ryanair

Well if he did say it as a joke he is an ar$ehole, because with less than two weeks to go, people listen to what he's got to say in terms of targets, and a lot of money was probably wagered as a result of his "joke".

I think it's been said before but these preview evenings are a total farce really - so much utter nonsense spoken by people in the know, and by those who are not in the know. Would not be using them as a punting guide!
By:

When: 03 Mar 16 12:30
That's the problem with these things well! Apparently Tony mullins was saying the other day he is a cert to go Ryanair aswell! But everytime I have heard willy mullins talksport him it has been gold cup and nothing else! But I'm sure ruby said it in jest and he has came out and cleared it up now! But it's a well known fact ruby hasn't got much regard for punters and there money so I don't think he gives a dam about any of us! All he cares about is himself and fair play that's upto him! I won't be backing antepost again after this year
By:
buddeliea
When: 03 Mar 16 12:43
Not sure it is fair play to be honest.
He aint got a sport without punters.
Should have a bit more regard imo.

Anyway, I hope this is genuine(for a change)I need Vautour in the Ryanair like a hole in the head!!
