So would I Jasey, and rather shocked too.
Conti will be at his best at Kempton. This time last year Menorah gave him a fair race and he's nowhere near the level.
Cue card was good, but I ain't getting carried away like some with that on Saturday.if he were to do that in the KG fair enough, but even that would still have me doubting the Gold Cup for him
He likes Cheltenham so that's in his favour, but imo he will be out his comfort zone and struggle to get home, especially if Coneygree has conditions.
Ryanair is his race in my view.
That would be some race with possibly Vautour and hopefully Uxizandre.

After the initial positive impression from Cue Card on Saturday I'm now edging more to the questioning of the form just like many did from the Charlie Hall, maybe unfair on him but with regards to the GC you can't count dynaste or ballynagour and holywell hates the ground on Saturday, that leaves conti and I just wonder if he isn't just regressing now.

Considering the million pound incentive I wonder why Coneygree wasn't targeted at this race, I know he would have missed it but that's with hindsight.

Until Saturday, Conti had only ever been beaten once in a chase on a flat track, apart from reappearance defeats. One of which included Cue Card in this race in 2013. His only (when fully fit) defeat came in the Aintree Bowl 2013 and this followed his fall in the Gold Cup which may or may not have had something to do with it.

Therefore I think you have to conclude that it was a crack performance from Cue Card at the weekend.  Of course Conti could be on the downgrade but I will reserve judgement on that until we have more evidence.

Time will tell who is right and who is wrong, but I think Cue Card is dismissed far too easily.

I see him as nothing other than a 3m+ chaser these days; at no point in the Charlie Hall or the Betfair did I think he was looking like running out of steam, and I was at Haydock, and the ground was very tacky and he wasn't stopping.

As shockster says, Conti is an excellent benchmark - look at his record on flat tracks and he was dismissed out of sight.  If the Betfair would have been run at Cheltenham, I'd say you have a point, but it was ay Haydock, a track Conti likes.

When he has been healthy, Cue Card very rarely doesn't run his race, and he settles a lot better now, so I don't the distance as being an issue at all.

When you have negatives about those at the top of the market, around 20's on a horse like Cue Card is good value to me.  No doubt there is the potential to have at least one superstar in the Gold Cup, but Coneygree won't be as effective if it's good, Vautour not proven over the distance, Don C has ran twice at Cheltenham and beaten twice, Don P not yet raced out of novice company.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Cue Card will win, but he has just as good a chance as some of those priced up a lot shorter.

Ain't we been here before with Cue Card?
And now at the age of 10 he is supposed to be a real threat in a Gold Cup?.
His only wins at around the 3m distance are against the likes of Dynaste and Conti on flat tracks.Conti in turn beats Dynaste and Menorah, and Cue Card himself in his flat track wins. That form ain't Good enough when talking about a Gold cup.
He's not gonna do it now.He could run well in a good ground King Geprge, but this lot we have now are a lot better than the likes of Menorah,Dynaste and Conti.......aren't they??

I never thought that Cue Card would stay the Gold Cup trip-until Saturday. That was by far his best ever run, even if Conti was a bit below par, Dynaste and the other two were a furlong behind. He would have won by another 10 lengths if they had gone another furlong, and his jumping cost him another 4 lengths compared to Silv. Conti. He should be joint fav. with Coneygree with Don Cossack, Vautour and Djakadam next in the market. I don't see the course as an issue as he has won a Ryanair.

We've been here with Cue Card in the past, but it wasn't his fault that he got injured in the King George, he was on course to hose up in that race, and now that he settles a lot better, I think he's in as good a form now as he's ever been.

I'd understand if he'd ran in the GC in the past and didn't stay, or beaten out of side, but I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt, based on how he has ran this year, plus his excellent festival record.  Last year was a nothing year for him, he clearly wasn't right, and now I think he is back in the form he was two years ago.

I agree that he'd have to step up again, because, yes, beating Conti and Dynaste isn't Gold Cup winning form, but the manner of how he beat them, I was very impressed.  I get the impression if Don Cossack or Vautour would have come over and put that performance in, theu would be lorded as the second coming and be into 3's or 4's for the Gold Cup.

Don fell first time at Chelt when going very well, and was hampered couple of times the 2nd time at Chelt. The way he stayed up the hill that day suggests he handles the Chelt really well so that argument against him is superficial, to say the least. Has beat decisively the 2nd and 3rd from last year's GC so he should be favourite, whether 6/1 offers value so far out is subjective but after he'll win the KG I doubt you'll get anything bigger than 3/1 for him.

I used to give Conti excuses for his Cheltenham record, as he was travelling very menacingly in a Gold Cup and then for some reason hung ridiculously badly when going a few lengths clear after the last in another.

I won't be doing the same for Don Cossack because I've learnt the hard way.  There may well be excuses, but festival form is very important, and the head of the Gold Cup market it littered with them, so it has to be a factor.

He beat the second and third, but I don't pay too much attention to Aintree and Punchestown form.  Although Don ran at Aintree, Djakadam and RTR had a grueling 3m2f slog on soft ground behind a relentless galloper like Coneygree, and I think they were nowhere near fully wound up for that race.

Respect your points Chief, and yes CC does look better now he is properly over his problems.....but he will be 10 next March.
I just think any form with Conti,Dynaste etc etc just is nowhere near what will be required to be a major threat to what I believe is the best bunch of stayers...and young ones at that,we have had for some time.
Cue Card is gonna have to beat Coneygree,RTR,Djackadam,Don and Don,and possibly Vautour.
As impressive as he looked on Saturday,I just cannot see him beating most if not any of them.

My opinion. If anyone wants a bet on Cue Card it has to be with a view to a Place return only. Many reasons why with the strongest being the simple rule that 10 year olds rarely win Gold Cups. Very rarely. Has never let me down. A clue to my age !!! There will be a younger stronger better horse in the race. Almost guaranteed. On an age basis Don Cossack is drinking in last chance saloon too. For me the winner is between Don Poli, Djakadam, Coneygree, Vautour or a complete shock. Hard to win back to back Gold Cups and rarely does a horse win the Gold Cup after failing the year before so odds are hard against Coneygree and Djakadam. Leaves us with Vautour or Don Poli or "drinking in last chance saloon" Don Cossack who has failed too many times at The Festival. So it is Vautour or Don Poli for me. Are you all convinced ? Conti could not even beat Lord Windermere. The last few Gold Cups.....Lw,Bobsworth,synchronised,Christ they would have been lapped behind Coneygree,in fact Lw probably was.

i put up valseur lido on the king george thread since when he has drifted like a barge pole for that. i didnt take the fancy prices for the hennessy as i thought he may be heading elsewhere, he's also entered in the john durkan. his price for the hennessy is now on the skinny side so it looks like he may well run on saturday. he is a second season chaser who won two grade 1s last year, one over 3 miles. he jumps and stays so is another one who should at least be considered for the gold cup. however, his owners have so many good horses he might not even run!

i think the gold cup ruins many horses but road to riches and coneygree have shown themselves in good order. vautour demolished novices over 2m5 at cheltenham whereas coneygree took on all comers and won the blue riband as a novice. coneygree could even improve this year and i think he deserves to be favourite, although he is ground dependant. i dont understand how vautour can be favourite over coneygree at this stage.

there certainly are many contenders, lets hope they all get there in one piece. at least with so many competitors they wont be able to spend all winter avoiding each other.

i love this thread, its great to read everyone's views.

Conygree was a novice with only 3 chases under his belt when he won the GC. But he was an 8yo and Djakadam was only a 6yo albeit with 5 runs - surely one would normally expect the 6yo to show the more improvement. The GC, and especially a very competitive one, can leave a lasting mark on the participants and its quite possible that some of the first 3 home may not reproduce that form again. Not saying it will happen but it adds to the puzzle. Very often it is said that such and such a race at the festival will be the best ever quality wise but very often we come away disappointed. Currently we are looking forward to a quality GC but by the the evening of March 18th we may discover the swan population to be smaller than expected. Hopefully they all get there fit and well anyway. The GC would be seen by many as being the most important race of the festival and the blue ribbon of NH but so often it disappoints. Perhaps this will be the year it fits its billing.

Jolly, I think if Valseur Lido was owned by anyone else, I think he'd be going for the Gold Cup, but with them having so many, the Ryanair might be his race.  If he stays the marathon Hennessey trip then he might enter the picture though.  Any in the Hennesey with Gold Cup aspirations like Saphir and Valseur need to be finishing ahead of Coneygree at the weights.

The Giggi ones, I think they'll run Valseur and Sir Des Champs in the Ryanair, the Dons and RTR in the Gold Cup, and possibly drop Clarcam back to 2m for the Champion Chase.  I doubt all 6 will be over though.

he's my cliff horse wellchief, where he goes me and my cash will follow!  .... i know 'a fool and his money are easily parted'.

on his website willie mullins said he might be his one for the national, i think he's a bit young for that but the national fences aint what they use to be.

as mullins said he stays i hadnt thought they would drop him in trip for the ryanair but as you say with gigginstown having so many good ones it may happen Sad. we know it will be the gigginstown team who decide where he goes and they want to win the race they sponsor.

Apache Stronghold is my cliff horse mate, and normally where he goes, Valseur goes!

I could definitely see him in a National in the future, and Don Poli too (especially with him having a Becher entry). I reckon Valseur will have a big future over fences, he just raced against top opposition all last year, so don't give up on him yet!!

Don Poli entered for the Beecher,i don't think Mullins rates him as a GC contender and we all know he wanted to run him in the 4 miler.Gold Cup is only race DP can run and that's why VL will end up in the Ryanair. At the prices I like Saphir and I agree he really needs to win or go mighty close on Saturday

I like Saphir also, accept that he hasn't the form in the book (as yet) as the others but have a hunch he's a bit special....couldn't have Don Poli for the GC myself, when he goes to sleep half way through the race, they'll be long gone by the time he wakes back up again.

I guess there are two ways of looking at Cue Card.
Either you feel he is now a completely different chaser who has left all previous form behind and beat a strong field on Saturday.
Or you think the race was well below par and the form means little.
Impressed though I was with him, I'm inclined to the latter. Holywell never travelled a yard, the Pipe horses continued the trainers' miserable recent run and never threatened, while Silviniaco was so easily left behind that you have to wonder if he, too failed to run his race.
Kempton should answer the question of Cue Card but, as a Gold Cup bet, there seems to me to have been an over-reaction to a horse who wasn't even in the market a week ago.
The Charlie Hall form wasn't strong and I just wonder if the much vaunted operation really was that transformative. Missing Cheltenham last season, we were told he had an operation then and that they were pleased he was back to his old self at Aintree and Punchestown. Yet now the summer op is claimed to have turned him inside out.
A fine horse and a great team behind him, but fourth favourite for the Gold Cup?
By:
Desmond Orchard
When: 24 Nov 15 13:22
I dunno, cyclops, away from Cheltenham Silvi is as good a yardstick for a 3m chaser as you could wish to have. He won 4 of the 6 available G1s at that distance, other than the CGC, over the last couple of seasons and his record once he has got his seasonal reappearance out of the way bears the closest scrutiny. Dynaste, although short of the very best can also always be relied upon to run a solid race and don't forget that Vieux Lion Rouge won for Pipe on Saturday, by finishing off his race better than the others (which is where the Pipe runners have been struggling so far this season), an encouraging sign that the barn is sending them out fit.
I think that that race was probably a very good effort for CC, whether he can back it up remains to be seen. The memory of him wandering around legless when having them all beat in the KG a couple back is a painful recollection for supporters of the horse, it's his ability to string together big runs that is my concern.
However, the form is in the book and you could argue that he deserves to be second fav, behind Coneygree, based on that. How far do you reckon he would've beaten Ptit Zig on Saturday had he gone to Ascot rather than Haydock?
By:
duffy
When: 24 Nov 15 13:54
Beating Conti can't be used as a yardstick with regards to trying to gauge CC as a GC contender, because as well as Conti does at Haydock, he doesn't produce at Cheltenham, by the same token if Conti had won by half the track it probably wouldn't have swayed too many with regards the GC,what CC showed at Haydock is that he maybe surpassed Conti's ability at a track where he thrives, but it doesn't fundamentally have a bearing on the GC.

If CC had beat one of the GC contenders on Saturday it would have more of a direct correlation but even then because the tracks are chalk and cheese you'd have to be careful about it.
By:
duffy
When: 24 Nov 15 13:59
Basically if Conti was the exact same horse at Haydock and Cheltenham and that was also at a level where Conti is competitive in a GC then you could say, right, what CC does to him here we can rely on it as a guide for the GC and therefore make CC a live contender, but it isn't like that.
By:
Desmond Orchard
When: 24 Nov 15 14:02
Interesting, my view is the exact opposite. As an indication of CCs wellbeing, beating an outstanding 3m chaser at a track that suits said chaser, Saturdays performance couldn't have been more encouraging. Beating Silvi at Chelters would be meaningless as the track doesn't suit - but it does suit CC. Therefore, we have a good performance in beating a top chaser at his favoured track by a horse that likes Cheltenham. What's not to like? Furthermore, and this is a point made elsewhere on this thread, what price would DP or Djakadam be if they had come over and done the same to Silvi?
By:
Desmond Orchard
When: 24 Nov 15 14:05
If Silvi was the same horse at Chelters as he was at haydock, aintree or kempton, then it's reasonable to assume that he would have won a CGC by now - given that he has won G1s at each of those tracks more than once. The fact that CC beat him away from Cheltenham is surely a stronger indication of decent form than anything else? And if CC likes cheltenham, which I think is a fair assumption then......
By:
duffy
When: 24 Nov 15 14:24
Yes, fair points, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd want to see CC do it over 3 + at Cheltenham before I believe it.
By:

When: 24 Nov 15 15:00
I read it the same as you Desmnond. If that would have been the Argento and CC beat Conti 8 lengths on good ground, you'd say CC had everything in his favour. The fact it was at Haydock on soft and he won going away says it was a great performance.

I won't go on about it now until Boxing Day because I'm sure people will get bored of me banging on about CC!!

I'm with Wellchief and Desmond here.  I haven't backed Cue Card but I think he's every chance in the King George and he'd be my pick right now (couldn't resist 14/1 EW S.Conti though).  After Xmas we'll know one way or the other I suspect.

Think you are all forgetting that Conti is at his best at Xmas, not Haydock in November .
The horses he's beaten ain't much anyway,Dynaste and Menorah!!
Like I've said before they are miles away from the level needed to win this years KG and the Gold cup in March.
Think that's what you need to look at when assessing Cue Cards chances.......the fact that his form ties in with horses below the level of the ones we have now.
For him to have any chance of beating this lot he has to have improved massively......probably need to be a different horse altogether.
Just cannot see it myself, but this is horse racing.
By:

My only doubt about the KG as opposed to the GC for CC is the possibility of the kind of horrible ground at Kempton that happens every other year. It bottomed Best Mate when he won the KG despite being at a slow walk for the last furlong. Slow horses like Long Run have won the KG on soft/heavy. The straight at Kempton can be the worst going anywhere in UK. I know that the GC is 2 furlongs more but CC was still running away from his opponents on the run in at Haydock. Coneygree in the form he was in last March will be very hard to beat but he is very fragile.
By:
buddeliea
When: 24 Nov 15 19:19
Coneygree in that form,no chance any of the old lot will get anywhere near him imo.
The two that chased him home,Don C and Don P,and possibly Vautour, only ones that would stand a chance of beating Coneygree.
Good ground would make a difference of course, cos Coneygree won't run.
Still could not have Cue Card though, just don't think his form stacks up in the context of this seasons Gold Cup.
By:
Desmond Orchard
When: 25 Nov 15 10:46
Since you're cribbing CC's form Bud, I'm interested to know which bits of form entitle Don P and Vautour to be more likely winners? It's a world of difference winning a novice event, albeit mightily impressively, to smashing a multiple all-aged G1 winner in his favoured conditions. Neither of them have proved anything out of novice company.
Beaten Gold Cup horses rarely come back and win one, although I accept that Djakadam is entitled to improve.
Don Cossack is clearly a tool and was unlucky at Cheltenham last time in failing to win a race that CC won the year before, but there's plenty of people who put a lot of stock in Festival form and he's not done it yet.
I'm a massive Coneygree fan and he is still huge value, the way he won last year was the best performance in the race since Denman, if he gets his favoured conditions and the race hasn't bottomed him, I expect he will win again. But I also expect Cue Card to be bang there, assuming he is fit and well.
By:
cyclops
When: 25 Nov 15 12:03
The fascination with this year's Gold Cup revolves around the fact that, of the eight principals, four (Coneygree, Djakadam, Road to riches and Don Cossack)have linked form, three are novices untested in open company and the final one, Cue Card, is very much the joker in the pack, having been unconsidered by all until last week's victory. Of course, others may emerge as credible challengers; Coneygree and Djakadam were on no-one's radar this time last year. But, with the possible exception of Sir Des Champs, it's hard to see any amongst the senior brigade throwing down a challenge and the three ex novices were so far clear of their contemporaries that maybe only Valseur Lido could be seen as a likely contender. And, surely, this is not a season when an outstanding novice would be thrown into the fray?
To be strident about any individual before the form lines merge means having the following beliefs:

Vautour
That he will get the trip, that he will improve upon his best effort so far, that his tendency to jump left last week is not ominous and that he won't be inconvenienced by Coneygree and Road to Riches taking him on for the lead.

Coneygree
That he is not ground dependent, that his current setback is trifling and that Djakadam and Road to Riches ran better at Cheltenham than Punchestown.

Don Cossack
That some of his rivals at Aintree and Punchestown ran to form.

Don Poli
That he can go the pace in a fast run race, that he was over the top at Punchestown and that he can improve.

Cue Card
That he is now a completely different horse to the chaser who has run a previous 19 times. None of his previous form could win him a Gold Cup, certainly not one as competitive as the next is likely to be.

Saphir Du Rheu
That his jumping can hold up in a top class race; that his promise can develop into substance, and that Nicholls will aim him at the race.

Djakadam
That he can improve from last season, and that the apparent lack of enthusiasm from connections (all they seem interested in is Vautour) does not belie concerns.

Road to Riches
That he is a different horse, as stressed by his trainer, on much better ground than last March and that he ran below par at Punchestown.

My Don Cossack thread reveals my own way of looking at it but I can only conclude by saying I've never known such a fascinating puzzle at this stage of the season and such a crop of top class staying chasers, most of whom should be around for at least another couple of seasons. Those that have run this season have recorded 8/8 victories with Vautour the only one less than pitch perfect. Something has to give soon, though it would take a better man than me to predict what.

An excellent summary Cyclops, however, regarding your Cue Card comment (and I'm in danger of sounding like a stuck record here, on a horse that I don't actually think will win it!), his chance was in 2014. His form at Haydock and before his injury overtook him in the KG was way above what LW acheived in winning that Gold Cup. Ratings wise CC got a 174 for Haydock, whereas LW got a 163 for the CGC. I know the festival is different, but even in the previous years Ryanair, CC got a 170. His form was more than good enough to win that Gold Cup, this year will probably be a different story, a 175-180 performance will likely be required.
By:

At this stage I would add that you cannot totally discount the following to differing degrees & I'm sure some of you will disagree.  I am not saying I think they'll win, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility in my mind.

Holywell - Only beaten 10L last year on unfavoured SOFT ground.  If it came up goodish would he get closer?

Gilgamboa - Could he improve sufficiently for a step up in trip?  Will they try? JPM has no credible contender?

Wounded Warrior - Only just behind Valseur Lido & Don Poli at big festivals last year.  Still only 6 so could improve.

Valseur Lido - Similar reasons to Wounded Warrior only 6 and open to more improvement than most.

I agree these are unlikely, but are they impossible?

Desmond,
There are no form reasons for me to fancy DP and Vautour for the Gold Cup and I don't think either will win it.
But they are both unexposed improvers that could well figure. both have no worries with the course,DP will certainly stay, and Vautour has obvious class but has to prove he stays. So basically unexposed horses that could improve to figure in the. gold Cup.
Cue card is totally exposed and has never shown any form at 3m ,or further in the case of the Gold Cup,that tells me he can produce what is required to prevail in this Gold Cup.
He may prove me wrong, but I really think the horses he has form with are nowhere near the current crop, and would be amazed if he beat Coneygree,RTR,Djackadam and Don Cossack, and if DP and Vautour have proved themselves over the season...them as well.

Shock,
I have backed Holywell on the  strength that he got pretty close on ground not in his favour, and if he got good ground he could  run a big race again and have more chance. I am a tad concerned however on his trainer not being happy and talking about lowering him in grade.
I wonder if the Gold Cup has had an effect on him?
