I've been a fan of the horse for awhile, backed him 3 times this season and a few times last season too. Saphir Du Rheu going back over hurdles also helps him go for RSA.

I'd imagine he'll go back to Ascot for the Reynoldstown next. He'll get a strong stamina test there.

Still hopeful that Valseur Lido runs in this and Patrick gets his way with Don Poli in four miler. Because if DP does run in RSA, what has Willie got for four miler?

Why do people feel that Kings Palace has to lead, I wonder?

No doubting the irish form but Nicholls was unusually encouraging in the Autumn about Southfield theatre being ''hugely exciting'' and reckoning he'll make ''an awesome chaser''

He ticks all the usual boxes - A head off a festival win last year, all grit and now just needs to improve the jumping a little. Hopefully this is evident today as they've had a few months since it's last run.

He was conceding weight to Carraig Mor and even though that is hit and miss, if it wins a race you have to respect that bit of form considering how King has spoke of that since day 1.

Nicholls always had it as a long term chaser back when it was hurdling and a 150  novice chase rating in November is a solid start. Excited to see how he gets on today and should be able to turn it into a stamina race to see of melodic rendezvous who has good chase form working out too.

Took the 20/1 to win today and march on top of 20/1 single from November.

Could be a great race this year the RSA

very surprised to hear meade say apache stronghold isn't running in this and the jlt is his target...trip is hard to gauge for this trip less horse cheltenham wise but i thought they might just drop him out in the rsa as his jumping will be tested far more in the jlt...hey ho i'm struggling to find a bet in either race some very tough stuff for the punter to sort out imo

Dilemma indeed Harry. The JLT and RSA are both shaping up as brutal contests. Though VL may have been short of his best today on grounds of fitness, the Irish staying novice form through Apache Stronghold just seems to affirm what a good horse Don Poli is. Winning Festival form on faster ground just seem to boost his RSA credentials. He looks rock solid - I suspect he would go very close in the JLT if he contested it.

keep looking at this apache stronghold - he wants a trip imo he was holding the second all the way to the line at the same pace...i'd punt if i was meade on the rsa

at the end of the day if we are judging the horse staying by his run on bottomless ground at christmas it is a tad harsh imo

I'm with you 100% Harry. Should defo go RSA and Coneygree &/or Kings Palace would could set it up for him perfectly.

I had £15 @ 66/1 to win today and at chelt in any race, but I'd be far far happier if he turned up in the RSA

nice little bet that tory tbh...but i'd want him in the rsa if i was you like you say, plus you can lay him short in the run as well...i've put a tenner up for those that want to get out of the bet at 28 and more will be accommodated when meade sees senseGrin

His overall profile just screams RSA to me. I also put up on some thread here that the sectional times of the Topaz suggest that DP out sprinted AS rather than out staying him.

Don't think he'll beat Vautour or Ptit Zig in the JLT, but he'd have one hell of a chance in the RSA. He also tops my trends spreadsheet for the RSA

Southfield Theatre the one for this. Fits every stat going, been trained for the race all season, solid jumper and is massive ew value at 14-1

Southfield doesn't hit the 'only one season over hurdles stat', but other than that he's very solid. Will Prob be my bet on the day

When Coneygree beat Dell’ Arca in November in the Grade 2 Berkshire Chase at Newbury, my colleague Mark Olley was impressed enough to allocate him a 147 performance figure, the same as his hurdle rating, writes Phil Smith (Senior Handicapper).

It is very rare that a 140 hurdler can replicate that level in its first chase but the time was excellent and both Dell’ Arca (over hurdles) and the third horse Horatio Hornblower subsequently confirmed the form.

After Coneygree’s win in the Kauto Star (Feltham) Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, I wrote that I did not know what rating to give him as the race fell apart, but that the time compared well with that of Silviniaco Conti. I admitted that I might have been 9lb too low. The reality is that I was probably more like a stone too low.

After Saturday’s win in the Betfair Denman Chase I am totally convinced. Both Houblon des Obeaux and Unioniste have solid handicap form against established mature 3m chasers and they were blown away in a stunning time. For me it was the best performance at 3m by a novice since Gloria Victis and I now have Coneygree on 166, which was the mark allocated to Gloria Victis after he won the Racing Post Chase in February 2000.

Yes, better than Denman as a novice, whose highest rating was 161 after he won the 2007 RSA Chase, which may well be Coneygree’s next race.

So what can beat him if he does go there? Possibly King’s Palace who remains on 156 after a marginally disappointing run at Newbury – he ran about 5lb below his best. He is clearly better than that. He has also run over fences at Cheltenham whereas Coneygree has not.

Apache Stronghold, Valseur Lido, The Young Master and Don Poli, who are all over 150, make this year’s renewal of the RSA look a potentially vintage one at this stage. Should Coneygree head for the Gold Cup, however, the benchmark is set at 173, courtesy of Silviniaco Conti.

Has anyone else heard anything about Adriana Des mottes for this race? I see she's a huge price - but 2 people have mentioned this horse to me in the last day or so. I wondered whether it's because she might be a possible ride for Ruby in a race where he has no obvious mount?

Meade: Very Wood lost it but he started to buzz a month and we knew we had him back. His owner is keen to go for the RSA.

Meade: It is likely Very Wood and Wounded Warrior will be split up.
