Indeed, not sure how many horses Edward Oconner has but surely can't have many better. Might only be one horse in your lifetime with any grade 1 potential. Anything could happen in future, horse might not turn out to be any good, get injured etc could get £20k for finishing 3rd in the Irish Champion, no brainer. However sure WM will manage to convince otherwise. Got to be better than running thousand stars who they know can't beat HF if he started tonight

Would love a shock racing headline, WM lets all stable stars have their chance to shine in Irish Champion showdown! Rather than Hurricane fly to run against 2 rivals in large anti-climax

Disagree there Fallen. I think a renewal is a good race for folks who like racing. Jezki was blocked, Conor wasn't tuned up, and the Fly ran a good race. It sure beats him taking on a thousand stars for certain.

And that renewal would be much more exciting with Annie Power and the completely unexposed UDS.
Wonder if we have ever had exactly the same field for big hurdle races twice on the trot?? Very much doubt it. |

I've a funny feeling we'll lose one of the big names post this race this weekend. A below part performance from one of them will lead to them being ruled out of the CH itself. I don't think Jezki and Our Conor can afford another defeat and expect to go to Cheltenham with a realistic chance.

Even if Jezki and Our Conor are beaten again, they'll still have place claims at the Festival. They've probably got more chance of beating him at Cheltenham anyway.

There's very little being made of The New One's jumping which I think is a quite a big concern for his supporters. I watched back some of his races and even leaving the obvious blunders aside, he appears very fiddly at a lot of his hurdles when compared to his rivals. Then there are the blunders which probably cost him the Christmas Hurdle, provided one or two anxious moments in the Bula and he was outjumped by everything around him at the second last in the Neptune. In the Aintree Hurdle he had a bad scare at the second. In my opinion all of these would be race ending mistakes in a CH. Of the leading 5 or 6 in the market, his hurdling is the worst (in my opinion). Not sure how am I overstating this as really it's been an issue covered in too much depth in this or any of the CH threads.

This was covered in depth in the racing post recently. There was a big feature on the importance of slick hurdling in the CH. Unsurprisingly HF was by far the best. I think jezki was worst with MTOY next! TNO on mistakes per 100 hurdles or whatever it was wasn't actually that bad!!
Intake the view that whilst MTOY might be a bit 'flicky' at his hurdles, TNO mistakes are worse and far more pronounced. I don't fancy him for the CH on this basis and also the fact that he won't have run since Xmas. HF and MTOY having bar far the best preps IMO. Jezki been on the go too long and OC had a setback |

Jezki is a far slicker hurler than TNO. He just needs to iron out the odd mistake. TNO is clumsy at times and has been a false favourite for too long.

Tory, Rock On Ruby went straight from the Xmas Hurdle to Cheltenham and won.
On another point, it was a shame Cockney Sparrow fell 2 out yesterday as it would have given us a close line on her ability matched to MTOY. I reckon she would have beat her by 4 lengths + |

Brilliant! Are you the singing roadsweeper from Only Fools and Horses?Not a penalty kick for Hurricane Fly today. Not had the ideal prep with having a bruised foot in the week, and Our Conor will strip fitter for his run. A better ride from McCoy will put Jezki into play as well. If the Fly does get beat today it won't be the end of the world; I'm sure connections will point to the bruised foot, but I'm hoping his class will pull him through. |

God I must be getting very cynical in my old age. Is it really out of the question that a concerted effort is being made to get Richi to opt for the longer event with Annie Power? Imagine The Fly wins today and Mullins and Ruby start jabbering on about how much easier it would have been without this "bruised" foot. I always worry when trainers willingly hand out "free" information.

The trouble with your conspiracy theory is it works just as well the other way round -- that Willie & Ruby are trying to entice Ricci into running Annie Power in the Champion Hurdle by demonstrating Hurricane Fly is beatable. |

I know ROR did Sint but I also think he was the first since 1993 not to have a prep run in the same calendar year

The other protagonists for Chamionship races make all sorts of excuses as to why they don't deliver. The Fly missed the last today against an improved Our Connor but still won going away. A proper horse and we see very few like him.

I'm confident that my two The New One and Tent will take care of Our Conor and Jezki but The Fly is definitely he one to beat. Top performance today

They want to put jezki back for the aintree hurdle...that's twice now he has lacked the initial kick to go with them after having every chance to do so.

hurricane fly is a great champion and will be hard to beat but our conor has proved he is up there with the very best of the contenders ,he was weak in the betting and had a winning chance at the last where he was beaten by a multi grade 1 winner who is unbeaten at the course ,the drift tells me that there is a fair bit more to come . an end to end gallop will suit this horse more than the race today and he goes there with a very realistic chance .

Don't think we saw the winner of the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle today. Captain Cee Bee only beaten a couple of lengths.he would not get close to MTOY or TNO.

The Fly has never been beaten at Leopardstown but they sure are getting closer. Is he better at Cheltenham than Leopardstown? I don't think he is. I'm not sure how they can cut him after that performance?
