Is a Thousand Stars running?  If not who is going to set the pace? Hope it doesn't turn into a falsely run affair!

Willie has already removed the only decent front-runner in the race, why on earth would he want to run Thousand Stars?

.... Wed 12pm last chance for someone else to supplement a pacemaker. Surely McManus will do it? Captain Cee Bee?

presumably mcmanus will just send out Jezki to tee it up for the tent??

if Frank Berry calls Jessie Harrington to do that, think she will tell him where to go....

Maybe being prominent will give Jezki more chance of winning the race.He aint far away from the favs on all known form,so a change of tactic may just make a difference to his chances.

When: 04 Mar 14 09:29
Geraghty says settling him is key and he may try to do that from the front though I don't see him sacrificing the horse by making it a fast pace.

When: 04 Mar 14 09:40
Going a decent clip from the front would be Jezki's best chance of placing. It's a no brainer really.
By:
pedrobob
When: 04 Mar 14 09:54
autocue is correct imo, that is as much as Geraghty will do and if he isn't pressed, it will be the same crawl as when McCoy rode him at Down Royal

Zero chance of Grumeti being let loose on the lead. There are only two other possibilities. Ptit Zig (trainer says needs soft or heavy ground to run?) or Melodic Rendezvous.... neither of whom have ever made the running in 20 collective starts

But Melodic Rendezvous most likely for me. Needs soft / heavy ground and a strong gallop to slow down the others to hold even the remotest chance. If it's a sprint, he can only finish 6th or 7th at best whereas the result would still be in doubt for the top five in the market (inc Jezki) in the scenario of a crawl, though favouring Hurricane Fly most of all.

It will show a complete lack of conviction by connections of Melodic Rendezvous if they do not make it a decent test, will be no point turning up otherwise. Somehow I think they will do what they always do.

All the trainers and jocks are saying you always get a decent pace in the Champion. But not if everyone is saying "no, after you mate....."

If 1000stars runs it will make the running very slowly or at least try to, therefore I am convinced Jezki will make the running for 2 reasons. 1) He has failed twice to quicken past the Fly and has to have different tactics to beat HF and OC. 2) MTOY needs a good pace.  Therefore it suits JPM on both counts.

Pedrobob: "Hurricane himself, who if he wins, will still have questions to answer".
If Hurricane can still have questions to answer after 19 Grade One's then God help the rest of them.

cyclops, pls don't take quotes out of context.

Totally agree great horse is Fly, but the only two unbeaten entries in the race, both stablemates, have been removed to ease his path..... he is not running against the strongest field that could have been assembled
By:

When: 04 Mar 14 11:19
We don't know that yet Pedro. Both have huge potential but neither has faced a class horse over 2 miles, particularly UDS. Don't think a powerful owner would leave the Champion Hurdle at home if it was really felt she could beat the Fly. And UDS's lack of relevant experience would be a huge worry had he run.

I am on NRNB so not overly concerned but would be a real loss to the race and would shake up all the other entries. Hope its nothing just market jitters

true cyclops. Yet if you believe Willie and Ruby, they both say "we have no idea how good they are....."

Pretty strange to leave out unbeaten horses of that calibre given not in the same ownership as Hurricane Fly, unless you have another agenda?
By:
cyclops
When: 04 Mar 14 11:43
Pedro, I'm sure they have a very good idea how good they are; not at the top of their profession for nothing.
By:

When: 04 Mar 14 11:49
would tend to agree with you, Cyclops. As much as admire Willie and Ruby, there is plenty they don't share with the public I think.

It could very simply be that Hurricane is streets ahead of the other pair, but they don't wish to upset two other pairs of owners. Though surely they would have to have been straight with them in private saying they couldn't possibly beat Fly?

When: 04 Mar 14 11:59
Mullins came out yesterday and said he doesn't know how good Briar Hill is?   They either know or they don't!  You can't pick and choose which horse the comment refers to.  Also until AP or UDS are actually beat it is very difficult to put a ceiling on their ability IMO.
By:

When: 04 Mar 14 12:06
So basically Willie has a clutch of horses he has no idea how good they are. I think the gist of this is more about furture potential rather than here and now. AP & UDS have their careers ahead of them. You have to be wary of putting the gun to their head too soon. It didn't do Peddlers Cross any good. Not been the same since.

From Racing Post twitter:

Nicky Henderson says My Tent Or Yours expected to run at Cheltenham but has a "little puncture wound in his near-fore sole"
"Nobody can guarantee anything but I am seriously hopeful everything will be all right."
"We are looking at it as we speak and are pretty confident it won't affect his participation"

Not really up on horse injuries, how bad does this sound? Not backed the horse myself but would be good to get all the main contenders there on the top of their game.

Why is it that he has he a lack of relevant experience??

Budd, Seven runs in his life, just five over hurdles. Only ever run on deep ground and never faced a top class opponent.
Love the horse but no horse with a profile like that has ever featured in a Champion Hurdle to my knowledge. Those who have run few times over hurdles (Alderbrook, Royal Gait) were highly experienced flat horses.
By:

When: 04 Mar 14 12:41
Yes I know all that Cyclops, and why was he campaigned so we could say that now??
By:

When: 04 Mar 14 12:48
none of the horses who ran in the Ryannair or Irish Champion hurdles can say they've had a hard race this season, including those who've finished behind Hurricane in those contests

A mile and a half stroll followed by a 4-5f sprint.

Difficult to see how that would have done UDS's or Annie Power's brains in.....
By:

When: 04 Mar 14 12:51
UDS is a front runner.  He runs, he jumps and they either catch him or they don't.  Experience is needed when they are jumping in the pack but he's out in front.  Did Ruby say the track wouldn't suit.  Well I bet it suits alright next season.  Just saying.
By:
buddeliea
When: 04 Mar 14 12:54
it would not have done pedro, you are correct.
UDS would have been out in front doing the same as he has in his races this season.
By:
buddeliea
When: 04 Mar 14 12:58
Exactly Shock, they catch him then so be it.

Annoying in the extreme how they have campaigned this horse, and robbed ALL of us the chance to see an exciting front runner in the best hurdle race.

load of bollax from ruby and mullins.
Its ok having a horse with Mullins but when your chances of getting a run in the big championship races are compromised by the trainer and jocks own agenda its time to move em.
