Another dry day. We havn't had any significant rain here for a couple of weeks now.

and there is none forecast before Tuesday 5th March. Depending on the forecast for that week we can expect the taps to go on to change it to good to soft...
if they were clever they would measure the amount draining and only add that much back but they won't because of evaporation, run off, droplets blowing away etc... ho hum plus ca change |

I cant see why he would consider watering before next weekend and by then we should have a better idea what rain is coming and when. No need for tap talk this week.

nobody mentioned this week, from Tuesday March 5th they might start watering when they have the rain forecast for that week
as they don't have reliable forecasts that far ahead they won't be turning on the taps til then, clearly if there is rain expected they won't turn them on |

Little bits of drizzle this last couple of days and cold but no rainfall of any significance due before the start of next week. No change to the forecast but I suspect it is now fsirly accurate up to Sunday 2nd.

CHELTENHAM clerk of the course Simon Claisse on Tuesday cast doubt on the likelihood of having to water before the festival after a revised weather forecast predicted rain in the lead-up to the meeting.
Claisse said the rate the track was drying out had slowed and that the going remained a mix of soft and good to soft on the Old, New and Cross Country course. "I had an update yesterday from John Kettley, who is suggesting that from Thursday of next week until the beginning of the festival there will be rain," he said. "His range was between 12 and 15mm, more on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday than on the Thursday and Friday. It's still a long way out to be certain, but on the basis of that forecast I could confidently rule out watering." |

If they don't do anything then there will be good patches by next week, so half an inch on Saturday, Sunday amd Monday between them will be just dandy.

The going will be determined by what happens the four or five days before the Tuesday.

maybe, but if it arrives as predicted in the 3/4 days leading up to the start of the festival that will be enough. at least it will be natural rainfall rather than claise turning on the taps.

Rain in varying amounts due Thursday-Sunday. Ground should be perfect.

"At the moment, each track is good to soft, soft in places. But as we move into next week we lose the frosts and start to see temperatures climbing."
He added: "I’ve had an update from weatherman John Kettley and between next Thursday and the start of the first race on March 12th, a range of between 15 and 18millimetres of rain is forecast. Most of that is likely to come on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday rather than the Thursday and Friday. If all of the above was accurate about current ground, and the forecast rain occurred as indicated, I think they'll start Tuesday on 'soft'. |

judo, if that 18mm was spread over the 11 days then no it won't. If all in last 3 days before then yes it will....imo of course. Still soft in places after essentially 3 weeks of no rain

Unless they get a warm spell cann't see the track drying out much. Looks for sure to be the slowest ground the festival has started
on since at least since 2010 and possibly quite a bit longer. If they get significant rain on the monday the going desciption could include heavy in places. |

The going is currently good to soft and soft. Turftrax map from Wednesday here:

Surely it will go back to soft? I've just lumped on the max allowed at 7/2 with Hills and 10/3 with Paddy and covered stake on good to soft @ 8/11 with Corals. Just praying it doesn't go heavy.  |

15 to 18 mm is not heavy rain, I've read the weather and it's steady at most don't forget that's over Thursday to Monday so no more than 3 or 4 mm a day and you've got evaporation, wind effect, run off and the drainage system
never gonna be heavy for a start, will be beautiful jumping ground, certainly better than the over watered false going we have had for years |

Metcheck and theweatheroutlook both predict over half an inch (15mm or so) on the Friday with further showers before and after.
BBC site suggests light rain and showers from Thursday onwards and the Metoffice suggests light rain followed by heavier. As long as the forecasts are correct like that soft looks odds on, certainly not 7/2. Some sites show rain everyday from Tuesday next week all the way through to and during the meeting (even a chance of snow during the meeting) which is why I worry it might even go hevay. |

Fair point, no rain fallen yet. judo, considering we've had no rain for the best part of three weeks, and with all this evaporation, wind effect, run and drainage there is still 'soft' in the going. If we do get 18mm in 4 days I'm sure it'll change the going. Don't want soft ground but its a real possibility if that rain arrives. We could get less, then again we might get more |

Agree Roo .Track not draining very well ,if they get 18mm should go soft , much more and heavy possibility. Taken the 7/2 it to start
on soft bit more than a coverbet that it will start on heavy at 14/1. |

No rain due before next Wednesday night at the earliest. There will be good patches after another week with no rain.

all going to come down to how much rain they get, how much wind and sun and how close to the meeting it falls
Everything will become clear as to the state of the going from the times of the Supreme and Arkle - 0-8s above standard good, 8 to 20 above good/soft, 20 to 40 soft, 40+ heavy approx |

Much to my annoyance all the forecasts have changed since yesterday afternoon. Now all sites are just showing showery rain on Thurs-Sat rather than the deluge that some suggested might be happening on Friday.
I'd say good to soft is now a 1/100 chance. |
