Exactly mate, long way to go and a fair few to see yet.
Just depends on whether you think his price is worth it now.
Could look big come March, but then again......

Despite the age thing he's the best we've seen so far including the Irish runners and to be honest other than NH and PN, who else has Arkle contenders in there yard?

I'm trying to talk myself out of Overturn but come the day it could end up like last years with only a handful of runners!

8s could look good on the day.

he will be even more impressive on good ground ,if his jumping is better than yesterday on good ground he might end up going for the champion instead of the arkle.

Unless something improves pounds over fences, based on hurdles form / ratings, it looks like a lot in the market would struggle to get near to Simonsig or Overturn; unless a Solwhit or Go Native enters the picture around New Year.

I backed Trifolium and he's a non runner, so then put a very small stake on Alderwood, who has since doubled in price; so I'm leaving this race alone now for a while because it looks like I've been burnt twice.

With the Go Native and Solwhit "will they or won't they" unknown, and then the bigger unknown of the Jewson, this isn't a race for me until much nearer the time, which is a bit of a shame because I had really tasty prices on Sprinter, Peddlers and Cue Card last year to keep me interested.

I think Simonsig and Overturn will be aimed at the Arkle, but could easily see Oscars Well and Captain Conan in the Jewson.  I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually looking forward to the RSA more this year.

What's your take on the RSA WC? Willie is talking up Boston Bob as the best novice he's ever had, strong words seeing as he had Sir Des last year! I think Fingal and Dynaste will go jewson. I like Ambion Wood.

Even if Simonsig does well over fences, there won't be too many wanting to take him and Overturn on in the Arkle. Without wishing to put the kybosh on him, Overturn is a very sound horse who stands training well. 8/1 is an attractive price as things stand today.

Hi Smart Predator.  The RSA is looking a very competitive renewal this year, but as you say, a couple could go down the Jewson route, like a few potential Arkle runners.

While it doesn't look like it could have a superstar in it, like a Simonsig, I think the overall quality of the race has more strength in depth at the moment than what the Arkle is looking like.

I've never really taken to Fingal Bay over hurdles, or his chase debut to be honest.  I've said before I'm not too keen when a horse only does enough to win, and idles in front; it's tricky because you'd have to produce him late to win and could easily get chinned on the line.  I also like to see a horse extend and go and win his race, but they're all different, so as long as he keeps winning it won't be a problem.

I think the Pipes may have learnt something from last year, with Grands Crus, where if they have nay doubts about Dynaste staying, I too think they'll send him to the Jewson, because it'll be the safer option.  However, he did seem to get every yard of the 3 miles when winning the Fixed Brush hurdle at Haydock, with Synchronised a long way behind.

Of the two Mullins horses I'd be more inclined to back Champagne Fever at the moment, but like Houblon Des Obeaux, he will only be a 6 year old.  Although it is quite ironic that the last 6 year old to win it was Florida Pearl, and Champagne Fever looks like he is taking the exact same route, skipping hurdling.  I haven't made my mind up about Boston Bob yet, so I'll wait to see him out again, although that's some statement by Mullins considering some of the novices he's had.

Sire Collonges didn't set the world on fire as a hurdler, but is from a very powerful stable, and looks at the moment, to be Nicholls' number 1 contender, so has to be respected.

Definitely early days, and haven't had a bet, but it's a race that's really interesting me at the moment.

Re Ambion Wood, I haven't seen too much of him to be honest; so hasn't been on my radar, but that could soon change Wink

Well Chief, I have read that Champagne Fever has various entries but if Boston Bob is as good as he thinks will he not wait a year to go chasing with CF? Or do you know something we don't? ;)

Good views anyway good luck

flush gordon,
interesting you mention the QM maybe for Overturn,i e-mailed bfair this morning to add him to the market.
Just possible that as the season goes the temptation may appear.

I think Overturn will go the same way as Peddlers Cross did last year - impressive in small fields early season but won't figure come March and the Henderson beast will be different gravy anyway - IMHO.

i think overturn will be far better than peddlers over fences. pc didnt look like he was enjoying himself at all last season bot overturn looks like he's loving every second of it. i'm a huge simonsig fan and am on him at 7/1 but after that performance on Saturday somonsig will have to take to fences very well cos he's going to be a hard horse to catch.

I didn't see the race (doing family stuff) - just the highlights on C4. But it looked like a glorified schooling session. He went off in front, never saw another horse and was neevr pushed because he beat horses who we already knew were massively inferior. We've seen he can jump a fence in his own time - impressively - but that's miles away from a competetive race where horses can challenge him for speed and put his jumping under pressure. Yesterday told us very little about his Arkle chances.

flush, theres no way overturn would go for champion.sanctuaire, sprinter
Budd,im suprised at you...

im very taken with overturn,as i am with arvika legionnaire.
the thing for certain is overturn is purely 2m while arvika could also go 2.4 or 3m.
oscars could easily head for 2.4 but,i think itl be aimed at the arkle.

are we dismissing tizzards horse too easily?while i think hinterland is soft it was a good performance to slam him easily.

i love the arkle

They were worried about racing simonsig over two miles as a hurdler because he can be a bit casual, well, in overturn , a horse that hardly anything could go with over hurdles on his day and who has just showed he's equally as flashy and quick over fences, he is going to put maximum pressure on anything is races against and there won't be any room for casualness in his opponents.

Simonsig hasn't even raced at 2 miles under rules but this season is ultimately going to have to travel through his races flawlessly at a pace he's yet to have been asked to.

Overturn beat not much but the performance visually was hugely impressive and although it is yet to be seen if he will match the figures he put up over hurdles, most importantly at the moment his performance looked to the untrained eye to be one where the horse himself was enjoying the new experience every bit as much as he enjoyed jumping hurdles giving him every chance to be able to match his level of hurdling to fences, which means he's at a very high level just to start with.

Tweedle,
i surprised myself, its something i would not normally entertain, going QM in a novice year.
Thing is this horse is very experienced,a top hurdler for a few years and going chasing late on,and really im just summising what connections may be thinking later on in the season should Overturn continue to impress. It possible they may think hes ready for that and not want to wait till hes 10 to try the QM.
They have put him in on here at 16 for the QM,not a price that appeals given the improbability, but i will keep an eye on this.

I am with strontium on this. Never under any pressure. Schooling session. A good session but needs to be viewed in that context. I am quite sure Simonsig and Captain Conan look just as smart schooling at 7Barrows. I really hope they do ! ExcitedExcitedExcited

Well yes thats right, but when top hurdlers go chasing and impress with their jumping, best to take note imo.
Forget the race itself, and watch him jump is the thing to do,after all we all knew his hurdle form, now we know he can jump hes a threat, has to be,and a major one at that.
When hes put under pressure we may find out more, but then i kept saying that about SS last year, and still aint found out!!!
By:
strontium
When: 12 Nov 12 12:27
SS is a freak. Overturn is just a very good horse.

The problem (for us) is Overturn is unlikely to be put under too much pressure before the Festival, so it becomes a guessing game. (Unless he meets Simonsig at Christmas, but McCain may have learned his lession there).
By:
buddeliea
When: 12 Nov 12 12:55
I did not really mean to compare the 2,just saying.
But i would say both are very good horses.Personally dont use the word freak.
I would also say that at this stage we dont know how good either will become over fences.

If you do compare them, one would say that Overturn is a lot more experienced and still in his prime by the looks of it,and SS is a lot less experienced.
Its still a case for me that SS has to prove he can mix it with the best, whilst Overturn has already proved he can, albeit Hurdling.
Its really a case of how quickly Overturn takes to chasing, and to me hes started bl00dy well, and looks to have taken to it pretty quickly.Of cours SS is ahead of him in that regard having a season behind him,but we do not know how they will fare respectively in the future.
Its possible, just possible, hes already as good, or will be soon with a bit more chasing experience.

As for Simonsig,he aint jumped a fence yet in public,so lets wait and see.

Hi Budd - sorry, I was a bit loose with my argument.

I think we do know pretty much how good Overtun is - he's now run 38 times! He's almost Champion Hurdle class and just below group class on the flat. It would be a surprise if he improves significantly for fences but no surprise if he runs to a similar level.

I agree we don't know how good either O or SS will ultimately be over fences, but I firmly believe SS has more potential. My point really was that something is very likely to get O off the bridle at some stage this season. That hasn't happened with SS yet over fences - but that is very much the exception rather than the rule, so not a good way to judge horses imo. It's like judging every Gold Cup winner by Kauto Star - most of the time you'll be disappointed.

As for Simonsig, you are correct. What I should have said was "Unless, for example, he meets Simonsig at Christmas...". Here the point I wanted to make was that Overturn may well not have a hard race before the Festival. McCain put up Peddlers Cross v Sprinter Sacre last winter, but he may be more careful this season. I shouldn't have picked out Simonsig - I meant Overturn could well dodge all the other top 2 m novices until March.
By:

When: 12 Nov 12 13:31
No worries mate.

Yeh i think SS has more potential, and would not be surprised if he ends up one of the best weve seen, but after reading my posts i expect you know by now that i tend to wait a bit longer than most to start acclaiming horses.
I also like to give other horses credit, especially ones that have impressed me and could also be anything over fences, like Sanctuaire eg,and i think Overturn has possibilities in that regard, although he aint gonna have long to do that.
Thats why i did start to think that they might go QM this season, only might though!!!
I dont think they will dodge anything, think they will map out a campaign and stick to it,but may be wrong of course.Hes different to PC with him being that much older, and i really dont think they will be thinking - the same could happen again, better wait till March.
Anyway, nice to see an exciting start to the 2m nov chase scene this season mate.
Long may it continue!!

strontium -hes almost champion hurdle?
he was second in the champion hurdle and time wise  his time on ground softer than ideal was the best of the day by a long way on saturday.
By:

When: 12 Nov 12 19:19
I think he means almost Champion Hurlde winning class.

I take both points of view on board at the moment.  He did look very impressive, but his jumping wasn't put under any kind of pressure.  We've seen lots of times that when some horses turn the screw, their rivals' jumping goes to pot, so we need to see what he's like against a proper rival.

It was hard not to be impressed though, and Sandown is a tricky place to start a novice chase campaign.

You could back him now at 8's and he'll almost certainly be shorter on the day to lay it off for a free bet.

As for the QM, not a chance he'll run, and if he did I couldn't see him winning it anyway (especially if Sizing and Finians stay at the minimum trip).
By:
strontium
When: 12 Nov 12 20:42
Yes, I meant almost CH winning class, not almost up to running in it! I stand by what I said above, but the fact he did it at Sandown is a good point and a bonus.

Dont blame them hes the reigning champ over 2m.
Should defend that,or go for the KG and GC.
Depending on how he fares over the longer trips.
Stays KG go GC,dont stay go QM.
And im pretty sure thats what they will do.
By:

Me too Budd. It's a shame imo people don't rate the Ryanair as highly. They should (again imo), but they don't.
By:

When: 13 Nov 12 18:50
Yeh,i agree Stront
The Ryanair is now one of my fav festival races providing us with some good races, and this years was a great race.
Its now a Grade 1 race in its own right and i do think soon it will get more recognition.Hope so anyway.
Guess if a QM winner goes in it the following year then that would speed things along.
It could happen if FR dont stay KG and trainer persuades owner to avoid SS at all costs, but i would be surprised if both of those situations arise.
By:
tweedledumbtweedletwat
When: 13 Nov 12 19:31
if he was mine id win the ryanair with him.its the race he would have most chance of winning imho.
wont stay 3m2 in a horsebox, afterall this is the horse who they doubted would stay 2.4 as his jumping was so exhuberent.
now he settles well surely the 2.4 would be taylormade
By:
buddeliea
When: 13 Nov 12 19:37
problem with that is hes the reigning QM winner,so owner would probably want him in that race again to defend, thats if he fails to stay 3m.
Had he say been beat in the QM,i think the Ryanair would be very likely, but he won it.
By:
tweedledumbtweedletwat
When: 13 Nov 12 19:43
thats very sporting and while i understand and applaud that my take on him running over 2.4 at lpool was fact finding so they could avoid ss this year.
while it may prove i was wrong,i still dont think i was...
fair play to all concerned[perhaps they fancy the forecast, tongue in cheek]
By:
GoldCupWinner
When: 13 Nov 12 20:11
Maybe trainer could tell owner winning the Ryanair is worth £80k more than finishing 2nd in the QM. Although from a racing perspective it would be very interesting to see Finians vs SS.
By:
strontium
When: 13 Nov 12 21:07
Budd, it's also one of my favourite races. It may not have the top level quality of the QMCC or CGC, but it has more depth than either most years, and there's no doubt it now takes a genuine Group 1 horse to win it.

GCW - isn't the trainer scared of that particular owner? FWIW (very little), I think FR will stay 3 m round Kempton. You never know if a horse will stay 26.5f round Cheltenham at Gold Cup pace until they try.
By:

I'd pay good money to listen to the conversation that Hendo would have trying to persuade Geraghty to rise Finians in the QM. Not sure Barry would be so impolite to tell him to shove it where the sun doesn't shine but suspect it would be along those lines!
By:
wellchief
When: 13 Nov 12 22:34
Finians surprised me so much at the end of last year.  I thought his Arkle was a pretty poor renewal, then he scraped home against Ghizao at Aintree, when Ghizao pretty much threw that race away.  Then last year he nearly lost on his reappearence when he almost fell, and then getting beat by Somersby; I didn't hold too much hope for him at Cheltenham.

Even when he won the QMCC I thought he was slightly fortunate because of how the race panned out.  But after the Aintree run, he completely won me over.  It was the first time I thought he properly stamped his authority on a race and showed the others who was boss, this after smashing into the rails before the race.  He'd now be rated in the top 3 or 4 best national hunt horses in training for me (which imo fwiw are Sprinter, Sizing, Finians and Big Bucks)

I think the Ryanair would be at the mercy of Finians or Sizing if they went for it, and would hope the owner would put them in the race where they had the best chance of winning.  The Ryanair is no second tier race any more, and the quality has improved every year.

Sorry to stray from the Overturn topic, but he could have a live chance in it in 2013!
