If he goes well on Sunday, sure he'll head to the Festival. Which race I'm not so sure. Having won a Grade 1 on good to soft, there's no reason why they'd skip Cheltenham if Sunday shows him good enough to go there.

Could always take the 10/1 NRFB which gives you some protection, albeit at allowed odds.

Come on Harry, join the club!!

very impressive last time and converted me...exciting to think how much better he could be over further still.

well am glad i haven't played him...he was disappointing today for me and never really travelled like you would of wanted and judging by the proximity of the mccoy horse at the last he pretty much ran his race although the winner was just to classy...

not sure what they will do now but would now tbh

a shame for his followers but the lingering doubts about him left handed are still unanswered and also his form in the second half of the season also needs a view...

he has always been a difficult horse for me to fathom but you would of hoped for better today imo

fingers crossed you boys get a run for your cash

Seems a bit tripless imo, and connections have entered him in everything from the Arkle to the 4 miler!

I don't think he'd stay well enough to win an RSA and he has shown today that there are better over intermediate distances.

Clearly will be better suited by better ground imho. Wouldn't burn the Ante post slips just yet!

"No real excuses" said Gordon Elliott (never the most loquacious of trainers). And none maybe needed. That could turn out to be a cracking race. The only straws I can clutch at are that Ruby again rode a masterly race from the front; he's so hard to beat when he dictates. In addition, the Don's worst jumps were at the last two fences; neither were bad mistakes, but both lost him momentum at crucial times. Absolutely no clues from the race as to where, if anywhere, he will turn up at Cheltenham; did he not quicken, did he not stay as well or is the winner simply a better horse? Yes, as harry mentions above, he didn't seem to travel with quite the ease we are accustomed to seeing, but maybe that was simply down to the class of the race. I certainly wouldn't use the ground as any excuse.
The Moriarty has often thrown up Cheltenham winners and not only those horses who have won it. Don't give up on the Don!

maybe that was simply down to the class of the race.

this is where i am at cyclops and the winner just might be a top notcher...however he did dictate the fractions and i doubt he would get such an easy lead at cheltenham in which case his inexperience might count against him, whereas don cossack has plenty of experience

niggling doubts still remain for me in regards going left handed, but on the other hand for me he never travelled like he does, so maybe something was bothering him or he needed the run

i still hope he takes his chance in the rsa as i still want the questions answered moving forward with the horse, although like a lot of the field this year he clearly has his limitations...that isn't to say he couldn't run a big race as the opposition are not strong however

hard to draw any reliable conclusions from any of the races on Hennessy Day  won from the front in races run at an absolute crawl, seriously slow fractions in both the PJM and Hennessy itself

For a horse with what seems like such a big following, does it not worry his fans that he seems to lose quite a lot?

After every race, it is always, but next time with....up in trip, stronger pace, better ground, ridden differently etc etc.  Not knocking him at all, but you have to admit he's failed to live up to him bumper reputation so far over hurdles and fences.

Because he's only a novice, I'd never write him off, as they all improve at different rates, but I would have liked to have seen him with a couple more chase victories thus far.

He didn't travel with his usual ease, so that's strange, he does deserves his chance over the 3 miles but I wouldn't hold out too much hope of reversing with bally....think they might go for the jewson now.

don't shoot the messenger if he's fecked up but at least you followers should get a run for your money

Good news Harry. If he's in the race, you'd feel its the correct decision. If he doesn't stay, so be it but, as you say earlier, lets get the questions answered. While it would be hard to argue how he could logically turn over Ballycasey, its another day, another horse race and he does have the advantage of having had four runs over fences. If he lines up, it would be very exciting for those of us who retain great faith in him.

well cyclops i still believe he has a good chance as he has the experience...i still believe something was bothering the last day, either that or he desperately needed the run...and of course going left handed is still the big question

i don't imagine he will be 16's come the day so might have a few sheckles as he has an ideal profile and i do like him, like i say he never travelled with his usual fluency last time and expect him to run much better although the winner is clearly useful but has limited experience and would have to emulate the great florida pearl in winning this on the back of 2 chase starts but this race looks more competitive than the small field race florida won...can the cossack do it i don't know but he certainly deserves to take his chance and we will have all the answers come the day

just hope the info is correct so apologies if i am wrong in advance

The Don tries again today. He floated over the fences (apart from nodding at one in front of the stands) and was travelling very very well when he came down six out at the Festival. Hard to see what happened - he seemed to take off well but crumpled on landing. To my eyes, the good going was not looking like a problem and fans of his must relish the prospect, assuming he is not affected by his fall. Those of us who keep the faith would have to be confident that, with a good round of jumping (and he's looked an absolute natural)he will do us proud.

Travelled like much the best horse for most of the race today. Either a bit soft, or didn't stay. If he can't get 3 miles round Aintree, then he won't see out an extended trip at Cheltenham in a taxi. Might have a chance in the Ryanair next season if they decide go for it.

I think he stayed fine. Came under pressure 3 out, but put distance between himself and the rest from there on, other than the winner. No excuses, but beat some good horses, jumped beautifully and surely has more scope for improvement in the future than Holywell. As the RP mentioned, not for the first time he had to be reined back more than once as his jumping took him to the front and a stronger early pace may have helped. But a fine effort and I hope they call it a day for this season and come out fighting in the autumn. A Hennessey bid on the cards?

Tend to agree Cyclops. He is still a novice in every sense. Think there is more to come and i've never bought into the hype. He'll be better next season and his ability to handle the wet ground is a big asset given he is trained in Ireland. I think because of the distance he was beaten it will put people off him but that'll just add to his odds.

I think Holywell had one of those days where absolutely everything was spot on. McCoy said he thought it was the best chasing performance of the season. I'd be very hopeful that, on another day in the future, things would be different. Not quite so keen on the idea of the Don going to Punchestown; it was a hard enough race on Friday, and you'd feel he's done enough as a novice.

The Don returns today in a low key contest, just as fans would have hoped. Though the ground seems plenty fast enough, you'd have to hope that he'll be too good for this lot. A top form Alderwood could well test him, in receipt of ten pounds, though he's never really looked a horse who wants nearly three miles. Don has won on his seasonal debut all three years he's been with Elliott and it will be disappointing to those of us who retain faith in his top class potential if he fails to score.

25's for the Gold Cup is probably a fair price. Still not particularly sold on him, and I'd fancy a fair few ahead of him in the market, but this is as wide open a year in quite a while.

A perfect start to the season for this horse. Particularly pleased with the way he quickened up in a slow run race, although admittedly against two probable short runners. I hope they "mind him" this season, as his jockey suggested; I was perturbed to hear Eddie O'Leary say last season that he seemed like the sort of horse that wanted to be running regularly. I'd have thought the opposite. His run at Punchestown seemed ill-conceived and a combination of a long season, a new jockey and an attempt to make the running resulted in the poorest performance of his career. While yesterday told us nothing in the context of whether he may be a Gold Cup candidate, he's confirmed that he's well, confident and at least as good as last season. His jumping was a joy and his jockey never resorted to the whip.

As for the Racing Post's opinion that "Don Cossack has blundered away his chance at the last on several occasions" I can't recall a single one. Indeed, his Drinmore Chase win, like yesterday's was characterised by a spectacular leap at the last.

Make what you will of today's race but the season could not have started better for The Don. Giving a couple of pounds and an easy beating to a horse who is rated 159 and higher than that last time out by the RP. The fact that Road to Riches sluiced home in the Grade 1 is no slight on The Don either, having beaten that horse in last season's Drinmore. Amazing that his best trip is still so uncertain; jockey says 2 and a half miles is his best distance, trainer said he'd be very happy to step him up in trip. Just a very good horse who goes on all ground on any course and who is a superb jumper. Whether he reaches the heights hoped for and predicted throughout this thread remains to be seen but certainly last year's senior chasers are looking eminently beatable.

Wasn't stopping at the end of 2m7f on his reappearance and has only run over 3 miles three times - fell in the RSA, a good, staying on second at Aintree and going nowhere after a mile at Punchestown. He certainly gets three miles; whether its his optimum trip, we have yet to find out.

budd - I fear he is Ryanair bound mate…….might change but I have heard Elliot say in the past he doesn't think he is a true 3 miler.

On SL website this afternoon, Elliott said: "That's great. He deserves that in fairness to him. He's always gotten plenty of stick and people have said he's been disappointing, but he's a dual Grade One winner now.

"I'll have to talk to Michael and Eddie (O'Leary), but if I had my way he wouldn't run until Cheltenham and go straight for the Ryanair. I have to discuss it with the owners as they have a lot of horses. He won't go to the King George.
