Booster, you must have a fair bet on SR for the Arkle, cos without meaning to be rude, you are way off in your comments re SR and FR.

No, I honestly haven't had a penny on and my Arkle record wouldn't be the best I have to admit. I can, however, read a form book reasonably well and at Ascot Finian's Rainbow beat horses who are still rated no higher than 125 and his other victory was over the horse who finished fourth at Ascot whereas Spirit River won a Coral Cup against the best handicappers around. It's impossible to be too dogmatic at this stage as we all know there's a long way to go but he's still my long range fancy although I was intrigued to see someone else say they'd backed him for the Champion Hurdle and I can see their logic.

Finians was not quite top class over hurdles? (maybe maybe not) but that hardly makes him exposed. I expext he traded at about 1.5 in the Grade 1 Challow before a combination of a mistake at the last and the horrendous ground beat him, and at Cheltenham he patently didn't stay.
But like Forpadydeplaster he always looked like he would be a better 2m chaser (imo anyway) and thats why I made him my early pick for the Arkle - and although I don't like to blow my own trumpet my antepost Arkle record is rather senstaional ![]() |
By:
I think he was beaten in the Challow like the Ballymore because he was against decent horses.

hey uncle....i mentioned him firse on the "arkle early ramblings thread"

booster you have backed SR for the Arkle imo and now attack is the best form of defence, vacating the Spirit River thread where your argument was not working to post here instead. I do agree Finian's needs to prove it against better horses but think he shows a desire for fencing and ease of jumping at speed that I look for in an Arkle horse and this could make a big difference in his fortunes but he will need to show a kick in an Arkle. Spirit River on the other hand shows stamina traits and will hopefully cure his jumping issue as he will need to jump much quicker in future.

By:
Booster respect your view but i think you are in denial and probably realise it. Everyone is saying Arkle for FR and nothing suggests SR would be better placed over the shorter trip. We all call it wrong sometimes antepost...no shame in it

I have to tell you, I was absolutely thrilled with FINIAN'S RAINBOW on his chase debut at Newbury on Friday — I really do believe he is the business.
He rubbed a couple of his fences but that’s what a real good chaser will do, the likes of Big Zeb and Moscow Flyer do that — but he's not frightened to take a fence on. It’s the sign of a special one because to win big a horse has to have a crack. This boy got himself into trouble and got himself out of it at a couple of fences and that is what impressed me. He was very good over the last, flew it, and although he’s a horse that will get further than two miles, the lesser distance early is often the way to go with a potential stayer, it’s keeping down the mileage. Remember, my Gold Cup winner Kicking King was second in the Arkle. I can’t look that far ahead but that’s what you always hope for. The season will tell it’s own story. |

Replies: 126 26 Nov 10 22:18 I think he was beaten in the Challow like the Ballymore because he was against decent horses. Agree re Chelt, but the ground in the Challow was dreadful and think that was the main reason. FR looks like one of those horses that has used Hurdling as a a stepping stone to what he is meant to do.Really need to be careful when judging a chaser on its hurdles rating.if a horse takes to fences well as FR seems to have done they can improve their rating enormously, after all he was only a novice hurdler with much improvement to come. |

It sounds to me like you're the ones who've backed Finian's Rainbow and are trying to justify and the last time I looked. Eric Morris, I was also winning the argument on the other thread too. I'll return to that thread in a minute but to call a horse an Arkle winner with a victory in a 3 runner flat track novice against a summer jumper who finds zero off the bridle and another who Paul Nicholls described as "not a speed horse" in his Racing Post stable tour suggests that daydreaming may be your favourite pastime.
When the whips were up in the Ballymore he found nil and I can't see how he was 1.5 on any exchange as he was well beaten before the straight. Wasn't you trying to back it, was it? |
By:
Cant speak for others, but i backed FR for the Arkle after hearing the jockey raving about his jumping, and glad i did.I dont need to justify anything,FR did what i wanted him to do the other day,and that was to jump well and attack the fences with speed, which is required for the Arkle, and he is now a lot shorter price than i have him at.Course their is a long way to go but imo he is the best we have seen so far and should improve a fair bit i would think.

Kirk, not sure what you mean about attack being the best form of defence as I thought we were having a discussion on the relative merits of the 2 horses. Making an assessment of Finian's Rainbow's form and stating the facts about the horses he beat and was beaten by over hurdles is all part of assessing his chance. I've been backing horses since Last Suspect won the National and, like others, get it wrong more than right but have seen many others come and go in that time who didn't read the form but followed the herd by reading Spotform or Templegate or (like yourself) jockeys' blogs. The only way to profit is to go against the crowd as you're betting against them not the bookies.

By:
lol booster, I didnt read the jockeys blog it was somebody else. I think Ghizao is the best we've seen so far, he has won a really competitive race at the course this season, will love day one Cheltenham ground, has the right connections, jumps really well upreserving energy nlike most we have seen and has a v good natural speed for 2m and an excellent kick. I am expecting further developments for the Arkle though and it isnt prospective stayer and your bet in the race Spirit River.
By:
Best Mate and Azertyuiop were previous winners of the race Ghizao dominated and Ruby could well be right er him being the next Well Chief.
By:
Ok lets try for some common ground....regardless of if he will win or not do you really think FR is not run in the Arkle and that SR will? That seems a good starting point as you have to be in a race to win it!
Yes a number of us have backed FR and you are missing the point again booster. Antepost betting is a about value and 33/1 was far too tempting. There is lots to do but we are happy to have a live chance and we feel no pressure at all to swap for a ticket on SR or anything else. Best of British... |
By:
Very dangerous game, backing the last good performance you've seen, like Ghizao. Of course his price has contracted but he had his ground against horses who want spring ground and the run of the race, making all with no challenge to his lead.
I'll give anyone a voice on a topic like this and love debating it and someone once said to me that you need to be looking the other way when everyone's looking one way and I'd say the time to back him is not now. I'd rather take Captain Chris from that race but don't really see him as an Arkle winner. Still not had a bet in the race but you know who I'm with. |
By:
33/1 was going against the crowd...sharpen you game up!
By:
Captain Chris is the horse I rate 2nd best for the Arkle at this stage and you wont see a better Arkle trial than the Cheletenham race all season imo. Ghizao loves Good to Soft which is what he will get on Cheltenham tuesday. Has all the credentials and Ruby is a great judge, if he mentions the Stewart/Johnson horse as a potential Well Chief and based on what I have seen that is good enough for me.
I am expecting another development on the Arkle front however from another horse who will be a big player imo. |
By:
I could be miles out here, but I canot have Ghizao starting now. Its just my opinion and i respect connections and their views (they know what it takes) but i just cannot have it. The only similarity between Ghizao and WC, imo, is where they were bred (and hence the reason i think for the comparisson).
By:
Well having just watched the Chelts race again I can see what they mean, he travels really well, jumps really well and has a stocky build can see him being a weight-carrier / conceder in time. Early days but this is after all an antepost forum.
By:
I too like CC - maybe needs further, maybe needs a RH track, and clearly has a wind problem, but is definately not a horse to give up on yet i agree EM.
By:
Also think he will come on again, as will Captain Chris, from the last run. Would be interesting seeing him up there in the Arkle with Finian's Rainbow travelling in behind him then the big question will be answered, does Finian's Rainbow have a kick in the best company to try and go past him up the hill. Ghizao has already shown he loves going up there over fences.
By:
Ghizao is an ideal horse for the 2 mile 4 furlong handicap chase Grade 2. Not top class and has a staying pedigree plus bumper winning form, all of which indicate he'll need further at the top class.
By:
Bring on Chelts, I wouldn't want your 33-1 now and that's on my own life. Good for all you arbers though but I'm just a punter who backs what he sees not what he hears.
By:
We will agree to disagree on Ghizao. You have the most conviction for Spirit River on here why have you not backed him yet you must really have doubts behind your apparent convictions if you havent backed him? This is an antepost forum so please dont say you are waiting until the week before the race to have a bet. You bet as you say so why no bet?
By:
That's a fair question but the price isn't going to contract today, is it? The horse could have injured itself yesterday so I'll wait and see if anything comes to light. The price will only change if it's stablemates disappoint or it's declared to run shortly so no need to panic.
By:
Really dont understand that. I mean if you are so convinced then you would have expected him to have at least halved in price all going well with a victory over the top rated hurdler (not now Desmond) in the Arkle, Celestial Halo. You were willing to take around 10/1 after the race and are calling people for having the guts to take 33s Finian's Rainbow now also 10/1. You can STILL get 25/1 Spirit River in loads of places the Arkle when you have the benefit of seeing him jump/fall ... yet STILL no bet. Either you are telling porkies re not having backed him or you have genuine doubts about him that you arent revealing or you dont back antepost normally and so you have no idea of value at this stage.
By:
Sr price for the RSA shortened after yesterday on here, not a lot,but shorten he did, maybe i aint the only one that thinks thats where he will go.
By:
No money at the bookies though and only pennies on here.
By:
See Steve Mellish agrees RE FR and SR,only an opinion of course, but it does seem you are somewhat out on a limb Booster.
By:
I backed Finian's at Cheltenham and after much consideration, I am of the opinion that he wasn't quite good enough on the day. I don't think he patently failed to stay, just that the opposition was stronger at the finish. He always looked like he would be a better chaser and I give him huge respect but am far from convinced at present that he is a genuine Cheltenham horse. I imagine he will probably have one or two more runs before the Festival - probably win both and then go off favourite or near enough. If you are a trader, I think he's a good bet but I am yet to be convinced he is an Arkle winner.
I'd also agree with Booster regarding Ghizao. Lovely horse but 2m4f looks the better option and far, far from convinced that he is top class. Which of the (admittedly) smart horses in that Cheltenham race are top class? Plenty still to prove IMO. |
By:
To be honest, I had intended to back him yesterday morning but had a meeting at 9 o'clock and some personal business to attend to after so was overtaken by other things but, as I say, I now don't need to panic as he's not going to shorten is he?
What have I called anyone for backing the horse they fancy? Absolutely nothing. I have, however, put his form into context both over hurdles and fences and no one else has bothered to do that, just requoted things they've heard. Good luck if you've backed it but not for me. |

Love being out on a limb, Buddelia, the only way to win in the long term.

Absolute rubbish booster. He WILL half in price after his next run with a win I stand by my original options on your stance which are currently disingenuous.
By:
Booster,
i have looked at his form over hurdles and fences and come to the conclusion that 2 pretty good performances at Chelt in grade 1 company over hurdles at further than 2m,and a very good debut over 2m over fences is fine when loking at a potential Arkle winner. |
By:
Just because I don't agree with you, Kirk, doesn't make me disingenuous, just that I have my own opinion until I see something to make me change it. As I said, Hell's Bay and Sang Bleu won't be anywhere near an Arkle. I'd fancy seeing Hell's Bay in the big summer handicap at Newton Abbot and Sang Bleo one for a decent 3 mile chase some time in the next couple of years.
