Perhaps when you train as many winners as Willie he may then listen to you Floyd.
And i think it's the Fairyhouse run you're referring too. As for running him too quickly, yes he did and hindsight is a great thing. If he could turn back time he would not of run but he can't. To the eye of nearly everyone it looked like Zaidpour had such an easy race in the Royal Bond and it took nothing out of him. Obviously that was not the case but he did not show any signs at home to say he was not ready to race. |
By:
Unkle you left out the rest of the quote, "..not respecting his hurdles"
A horse like him who is going over fences next season might not respect hurdles. It's common enough. |
By:
Also I took the 9/1 for the supreme about zaidpour. Seems value and I'm confident it's the target.
By:
CVByrne, where does your confidence come from please? I have reluctantly backed Z for the Supreme but my initial, larger bet was for the longer race.
By:
Hard to explain. I've just been very good at reading where mullins intends to run his horses. I am from Ireland and pretty much zero comment from the man gets by me.
I also assess his team and see what horses will go where, for example my belief Mikael D'Haguenet was arkle bound because he has Quel Esprit for the RSA. Zaidpour is his only decent chance for the Supreme. He has Bishopsfurze and Gagwell Flyer for the Neptune among others. |

I was told by somebody close to the stable before he ran he was being aimed at this race and they told me to back him for it. Obviously i got worried when he went for and hacked up in the Royal Bond but was told after the run at Christmas they should not have run him and he is to be aimed at the Deloitte (i think its called) over 2m 2f at Leopardstown on Hennessy Day. He also said the Neptune is still the aim.
Thats what i was told and im not telling anybody to rush out and lump on but thought i would pass it on |
By:
Mullins is a class, top class trainer anyone thinking otherwise I'm sorry is speaking rubbish. But trying to get a race out of him for novices well for me thats a entirely different story, I remember Quel Esprit last year and thats enough not to trust a word Willie says as far as a target goes. Unless you're lifestyle flashy like Satellite[;)]
By:
cv,mullins should run a horse in the race he has the best chance of winning imo,and not cos he aint got a runner in the race, better to have 2 chances of victory in a race, than one chance in 1 race, and no chance in the other.
if you see what i mean!! |
By:
sj Mullins said in his stable tour at the beginning of last season that Quel Esprit would be run in middle distance hurdles over 2m4f-2m6f he did exactly that. You have no cause for complaint.
Also I agree budd, but if he thinks a horse has an equal chance in both races he'll then decide what is best to get him the most winners. He's always done that. There is an element of over confidence on my part, having never backed one of his for the wrong race. So never had my fingers burnt. |
By:
cant really remember backing too many of his winners at Cheltenham to be honest,if any!!
By:
Well he said on plenty of occasions during the season that he was going for the Albert Bartlett mate
By:
can you find me a quote sj? If he ever mentioned the AB he mentioned the Neptune in the same sentence like he always does.
By:
Are you sure WM has run all his best hurdlers yet CV? So Young and Bob's Worth are the shortest price of his in the Neptune, excluding Zaidpour, and the way he has been talking about them he has better at home?
By:
Zaidpour is his best, they think the world of him
By:
Weather here has held up a lot of plans, few will be out soon. Just think one run over 2m4f and 2 over 2m suggests he will go for Supreme. Especially when next run will be over 2m2f. He's Supreme bound.
By:
I agree but surely he has more than one top hurdler. What about Day of a Lifetime, in the same ownership as Zaidpour and their shortest price runner in the Champion Bumper last season?
By:
Not all will go to Cheltenham. We really rate Punchestown over here and there is Fairyhouse. It's hard to know who is Neptune bound.
By:
bob's worth is henderson's?!
By:
Zaidpour is nailed on to run in the Supreme Novices lads, WM was very confident before he got turned over the last day but will have learned more about the horse in defeat than he would have otherwise.
Current odds represent some genuine value which is perhaps a side effect of Willie never ruling any Festival options out for his novice charges. |
By:
If Cue Card runs dont think it will matter!!
By:
Sorry Paul, I mean't Bishopsfurze. Get's to you sometimes. Cross referencing here, there and everywhere.
By:
no worries brigust :) wasnt being arsey, just thought i'd lost the plot! if mullins has bishopsfurze and so young for the neptune, surely zaidpour will go supreme? and although lost last week, was staying on well... think all 3 novice hurdles are wide open, cant wait for the festival!
By:
I've backed Zaidpour for both the Supreme (main bet) and the Neptune as a saver.
After he won first time WM said 'We'll see how he progresses, but for now I would favour the Supreme Novice's Hurdle as his likely Cheltenham target. I don't think we need to worry about his pace for a race like that'. I agree actually and also think Cue Card will go for the Neptune to miss him. We'll see. |
By:
Cue Card will run where the trainer wants him to run, dont imagine he is trying to avoid any other novice, why should he?? if anything i would think its the other way round.
By:
still got toubab left in supreme who could be just as good (might see that saturday) and likes of rock on ruby in neptune. none are certs for any of the races so wouldnt imagine they'd duck anything else
By:
Exactly
By:
Personally think zaid is supreme bound, bet him at 12's and also at 8's again. I dont think the race the other day will change anything as most races in ireland are run a crawl and sprint at the finish
If he was neptune bound he would have ran at 2m4f furlong alot more |
By:
I think everything points to the Neptune for Cue Card.
He hasn't run over 2m, he was easily out speeded by Menora and there is at least one fast horse in the Supreme. Absolutely no need to go for the 2 miler and the Neptune would be in the bag, so to speak. Wherever Zaidpour goes Cue Card doesn't. Definitely not scared just sensible. In my opinion of course. |
By:
Zaidpour will have to jump much better then he has if he has any chance in the Supreme. He also jumped to his right last time out, which he cannot do at festival pace on decent ground.
Cue Card on the other hand is a slick jumper who has a rating around 160 which he achieved over the course/distance. Cue Card will be very hard to beat in the supreme if he runs to form and will do even better of the likely srong pace. |
By:
All I seem to hear is 'as long as he jumps better'. Lots of Graded races in Ireland are run at a slower pace on very soft ground but the Irish always do very well at Cheltenham.
I've always believed horses jump better when they are going 'their' pace. If the pace is too slow they fiddle more because they are not striding out fully and when they are going too fast they misjudge or are going too fast to shorten when off stride. |

Hopefully the owners of Megastar fk off and let the trainer do what is best for the horse from now on in.
He absolutely hated that gnd today, a month off, a prep on good gnd, then off to the Supreme. ![]() |
By:
Inca, he doesn't know which race is best for his horses, but he has an idea. He usually mentions a couple of races as targets. What I do is analyse his team and figure out where I think each horse will end up. I've been quite good and lucky at it thus far.
By:
I dont see why Cue Card would go for the Neptune after being beaten by the champ hurdle fav?
By:
Cue card will go for SN for sure. If not that then maybe the Champion (then most people would lose a lot of respect for Tizzard). As for Zaid, i think it will go down SN route still unfortunately. The last run can be completely written off- its like when dunraven came out again so quickly - horses can just bounce. Its going for that 2m2f Deloitte in February then on to the festival.....lets just pray it needs that extra 4f and turns up on wednesday!!
By:
Looking at his form,i dont really see much to be honest, yeh he looked good race before last, but the horses he has faced dont look that much cop to me.Could be anything, but nothing there to get me parting with any cash!!
By:
CV - i would love to meet you and learn about your WP system. given he has more darts to fire at every race trying to solve his arrangements is worse than the rubix cube. plus he doesnt help the punter that much in advance with clarifying targets.
By:
You just need to follow pretty much every comment from Mullins. He gives away plenty of indicators about horses likely campaigns. I could just be lucky you know.
By:
Think you are mate to be honest.
Mullins is an antepost nightmare, always has been. |
By:
Well until I get burned by him I'll keep backing his antepost.
