megsy- you have me worried. A recession is not denoted by the level of the all ords. The index fell to 3250 because of the GFC situation only. Our economy was actually in good shape but stocks fell in sympathy.

The AUD fell because, in the worlds greats financial oxymoron, the USD is seen as a safe haven in crisis even though the US economy was in meltdown. It would take 20,000 plus words to explain it fully so plz dont ask.

You totally fail to acknowledge that the aussie economy is in decline and given world factors could easily decline big time.Instead your head is firmly in the sand  relying on the diminishing mining boom and  redundant statistics.

You are either an economic dunce OR a lamb being led to slaughter.Either way  its a one way street to...................... I;ll let you work out the rest.

seems my facts you dont like to read, get ya head out of ya arse and read some facts for a change, not some journalist's columns you read and believe as gospelAngry

US is bouncing back imo

Europe a HUGE worry but they will work it out - good to see Italy stay under the dreaded 7% on their bond sale last night - JUST

We're doing fine down here, just need a bit of confidence to return and people to realize how good we actually have it

megsy- your most confused post yet. Your really struggling.Cannot respond to your comments as its bordering on gibberishCrazy

womble- why 7%? why not 5 or 6 or 11%? What is the difference?. You must have missed the fact that there were no bids at all for the 3 yr italian bonds- none. Italy is as good as bankrupt, no good news there.
A cheery outlook does not change the facts.

for those doubting the slowdown in china- Lifted from reutersSad

China's factory activity likely shrank again December as demand at home and abroad slackened, a purchasing managers' survey showed on Friday, reinforcing the case for pro-growth policies to underpin the world's second-largest economy.

G

HSBC Purchasing Manager's Index, designed to preview the state of Chinese industry before official output data are published, inched up to 48.7 in December from a 32-month low of 47.7 in November but fell short of the flash reading of 49.

The HSBC PMI has been mostly under 50, which demarcates expansion from contraction, since July.

Underlying indices showed softening demand at home and abroad, according to the data collated by UK-based information firm, Markit.

The sub-index for overall new orders edged up to 46.9 in December from November's 45, but still signalled falling demand. New export orders also shrank.

"While the pace of slowdown is stabilising somewhat, weakening external demand is starting to bite," said Qu Hongbin, China economist at HSBC.

surely any government could spend money that was already there, and did they even spend it wisely?

credit must go to previous governments both liberal and labor for having us in a sound financial state plus the mining boom imo

The $900 hand out-stimulus package  , what a load of sh1t.
In melton, werribbe sunshine, not 1 kid got a pair of shoes from the stimulus package; it went on Pokies, drugs, cigarettes and grog.
They should have cut the middle man out and sent CUB a check for 20MIL

In Prahan-Toorak it went into the bank.

the package was delivered when the world was on the way out, was a total waste of money

and much to Peter Costello's chagrin lol

AFL - we were one of the rare countries with a surplus so of course the government was going to throw that money around

most other countries didn't have this luxury

imo you give them to much credit

By:

When: 30 Dec 11 10:24
It  wasn't just the fact that we had a surplus, but the timing and amount and distribution of the money that was the KEY to getting through that period. Also the Libs are still bleating about that they spent too much lol. Totally disregarding the fact that it WORKED. It's like saying the yanks spent too much money on the first moon landing. imo.Laugh

with all the debate going on here between those on the left and right it makes you wonder how the citizens from some of these debt ridden nations don't make more of a fuss with their politicians running up these extraordinary deficits.

Its not like they've just come out of a war

i think our overall loathing of politicians (libs, labour or greens) and general mis-trust is a positive trait of aussies

Who would have been blamed if the Stimulus package didn't work and we had fallen into recession?

Would we have blamed Costello and the Libs for not leaving a bigger surplus?

No, all the right whingers would be blaming Swan, Rudd and Labor, SO GET OVER IT all the right whingers and accept that Labor have proved to be better financial managers than Costello ever was , under more difficult circumstances.

The RP Data-Rismark statistics also show house prices fell 2 per cent in the three months to November - more than any other capital city.

from todays heraldsun.

Across Australia there is reason for some new year cheer, with property prices rising in November for the first time in 11 months.

The data shows a 0.1 per cent rise in capital city property prices.

The value of Melbourne property rose 0.2 per cent for the month, the first price increase since March.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.
State government figures released yesterday show the value of building permits in Victoria hit a record high for November of $2.2 billion, with one residential project alone worth $78 million.

Rismark director Christopher Joye said Melbourne property prices rose 27.2 per cent between January 2009 and July 2010 and the price fall this year was a correction.

"We are forecasting quite a robust recovery in Melbourne for the first half of the year," Mr Joye said.

"We think that the two RBA rate cuts will have a much bigger impact that most people expect."

Regional house values also increased the most since December 2010, rising by 0.3 per cent last month.

suggest you go read todays heraldsun, 2ndly, house 2 doors up from me sold 2 weeks ago after being on the market 3 weeks and for above reserve. you will find some areas are gaining while other areas are losing housing prices. the wealthier suburbs are doing badly hence the percentage drop, anyway mrben only deals in DATA reason i posted my last post, so data is fact!!!Wink

27 new posts.Good thread.Love

AFL- no wonder you named yourself AFL-you really are a total dropkick who needs to be punted.Crazy The shallowness of your responses on this thread and others is extraordinary.

Megsy- your stats are selective and misleading.House prices have officially fallen nationally by 4.4%. Rismark? Is that a property mob? Don't tell me your really that naiive to listen to a property group talking property up? You really are a dunce if that is the case. I'm starting to think you 21yo or less with little life experience. Is that correct?

I should read the herald sun? Do they do articles in full sentences? If that is your source of info you might find it interesting that many "journalists" in such basic publications are pimply faced 20yo's.Plzzzzzzzzzz don't insult your fellow forumites by posting such inaccurate drivel.

Swordane and others are on the money- house prices will fall further in 2012 even though interest rates will be cut more than once.

womble- W Swann worlds best treasurer, look at his competition IMO!Laugh Happy to agree with you hes better than the greek guy, the italian guy, and the european guys in general. Hes also better than the USA guy. But not much of a bench mark is it? One positive for him is that up to now he has resisted their flawed policies.BUT when our revenues fall- WILL he he act correctly OR will he follow their ways of borrow and spend?  Remains to be seen.

megsy the first thing you need to do is stop listening to the property movement.

australia just like the US and Japan has been in a property bubble since the early nineties!

US home prices will continue to fall as Aust does and the UK is toast.the ECB and the federal reserve
just keep the ponzi scheme going with all the banks insolvent.

capitalism has been hijacked by wall street creating rising asset prices based on nothing.

2012 probabably the the first quarter will see a collapse that will make 2008 look like a tea party!

absolutely correct ... the appointment of henry paulsen ex ceo of shonks goldman sachs to the Head of the US Federal Reserve was Wall Street's finest coup

http://www.crikey.com.au/2008/10/01/steve-keen-hank-paulson-the-evil-scientist-not-the-hero/

Well, score one for the Evil Scientist. Henry Paulson, the architect of the bailout Plan, was until 2006 the Chief Executive of Goldman Sachs, one of the Wall Street merchant banks that profited from subprime lending when it was in full swing, and, tellingly, also profited on the way down by correctly guessing that the bonds that financed the lending would tank (along with American house prices).

... and their game ... continues ffs
