![]() AUSTRALIA'S unemployment fell to 5.2 per cent in December, official figures show. Total employment fell 293,000 to 11,421,300 in the month, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Roughly 24,500 full time jobs were added to the economy but part time employment fell 53,700 in December. The forecast was for total employment to have risen by 5,000 in December with the unemployment rate at 5.3 per cent, according to the median of 13 economists surveyed by AAP. |

megsy- you are continuously exposing your self as an extraordinary KNOB. AN incredible 53,000 + partime jobs were LOST in dec. There were 29,300 LESS ppl employed in dec.
heres an extract fom ABS ustralia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.2 per cent in December, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said today. The ABS reported the number of people employed decreased by 29,300 to 11,421,300 in December. The decrease in employment was driven by a drop in part-time employment, down 53,700 people to 3,370,300, and was offset by an increase in full-time employment, up 24,500 people to 8,051,000.The decrease in seasonally adjusted part-time employment was driven by weaker than usual growth during the December period, which was particularly noticeable for women aged 15 to 24. The number of people unemployed decreased by 3,800 people to 629,900 in December, the ABS reported. The ABS monthly aggregate hours worked series showed an increase in December, up 5.6 million hours to 1,622.0 million hours. The ABS reported a decrease in the labour force participation rate of 0.3 percentage points in December to 65.2 per cent. http://bsllibrary.org.au/employment-training/australias-unemployment-rate-at-5-2-per-cent-in-december-2011-abs-15101/ |

Full-time employment rose by 24,500 to eight million in December but part-time employment was down 53,700 to 3.37 million Despite the big drop in overall job numbers the unemployment rate remained at 5.2 per cent. This was because fewer people were actually looking for work and have fallen out of the labour market and participation rate |

Aussie Punter....
The labour force is defined as the number of people employed plus the number unemployed but seeking work. The non labour force includes those who are not looking for work, those who are institutionalised and those serving in the military. labour, liberal hasnt changed policies, nothings changed. real employment ( full time) increased 24,500 what seems missunderstood is many of the 53,700 stop seeking employment, retired etc. the good news is 24,500 REAL jobs were created. |

megsy- it is clear that you have little if any understanding of the way statistics are collected or interpreted. You are happy to swallow what is fed to you.
Further your infantile reactions when challenged indicates a low IQ. For confirmation of this phenomena check the reactions of forum low life AFL.His are even worse than yours. Take a moment to read the bloomberg article, though I doubt it will make any difference to someone as intellectually challenged as yourself. http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-01-19/australia-registers-worst-year-for-employment-since-92-economy.html Bloomberg Australia Registers Worst Year for Employment Since ’92: Economy January 19, 2012, 3:56 AM EST More From Businessweek By Michael Heath Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Australia unexpectedly lost jobs for a second straight month in December, capping the nation’s worst year for employment in almost two decades and weakening the local currency as traders raised bets on interest-rate cuts. Falling part-time employment stalled job growth last year, with total payrolls posting little change in the year through December, its worst annual performance since 1992. The unemployment rate held at 5.2 percent for a second straight month in December as full- and part-time positions combined posted the biggest drop since April. “Domestic business conditions are tough,” said Savanth Sebastian, an economist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the nation’s largest lender. “Over the next few months, the ongoing uncertainty about the global environment is likely to ensure businesses remain cautious and as such hiring intentions will continue to be scaled back.” Have a nice evening ![]() |

This thread should be renamed "the cut & paste wars". A lot of mud slinging but not a morsel of analysis to support or disprove the "coming recession" thesis. Only cut and paste articles form newspapers. It makes an economist laugh.
The US unemployment is running almost twice that of yours, yet NO RECESSION. Canada is influenced by the same global economic drivers as Australia and is currently running unemployment significantly higher than your, yet NO RECESSION. Although conceptually I believe benny is on the right track here, he wouldn't have the faintest idea how to go about supporting what he is posting beyond cutting and pasting what he reads in his daily newspaper. Not a clue. You are looking at the wrong metric. You better start looking at the impact of a global economic slowdown, and as result a China slowdown, on your GDP. With hard numbers, not cut & paste cr@p. There are a ton of not government manipulated data you can use as metrics, you just have to know where to go find them. You better start looking at the impact of credit contraction on your economy and hence GDP if your property bubble bursts. And often missed on how benny sees the world, you better start considering how your central bank will respond to these events to try to prevent a recession. A lot of people were betting on the US to be in a recession by now. It didn't happen, and it's not going to happen as long as the FED has the money spigots wide open, REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE UNEMPLOYMENT LEVEL IS. Get a clue FFS. |

Menelaus, you've got this bloke pegged Well said, mate. I'm an economist by trade and hang out over at the financials forum. I pulled this mug's pants down and gave him a good spanking a number of times about all the drivel he was posting over there. The mug is utterly clueless and instead of keeping his mouth shut and try to learn, he mouths off, makes outrageous claims, insults those who disagree with him, and in general continues to embarrass himself without any shame. He lost the plot, best ignore him. ![]() |

True, that doesn't make me an "economist" per say, but it's a hell of a lot more than cutting & pasting articles and regurgitating someone else's ideas and trying to pass them off as financial savvy, when you been confirmed as a clueless clown time and again. What's your problem? |

True, that doesn't make me an "economist"
sorry menelaus i always get a laugh when someone mentions economists (you're off the hook by the opening phrase tho ![]() it reminds me of the following "economist joke" A mathematician, an accountant and an economist apply for the same job. The interviewer calls in the mathematician and asks "What do two plus two equal?" The mathematician replies "Four." The interviewer asks "Four, exactly?" The mathematician looks at the interviewer incredulously and says "Yes, four, exactly." Then the interviewer calls in the accountant and asks the same question "What do two plus two equal?" The accountant says "On average, four - give or take ten percent, but on average, four." Then the interviewer calls in the economist and poses the same question "What do two plus two equal?" The economist gets up, locks the door, closes the shade, sits down next to the interviewer and says, "What do you want it to equal"? |

Menelaus...it's mostly a political motivated debate over here. They can't stand the fact that Labor won Gov't..and talk it down at all cost. They hate the fact that it was a Labor Gov't in power and we avoided the worst of the GFC. They can't stand the fact that despite the Hung Parliament they have managed to pass over 200 pieces of legislation. They including the majority Murdoch Media continue to belittle our PM at every opportunity. Sore losers IMO.

Thanks for posting that AFL. AFL, the poor sob is over at the financials forum now hurling insults at me over there. He's been stalking me for months ever since I corrected some drivel he posted over there. I think not only he's utterly stupid, he literally has lost the plot at this point.
This should have been a wake up call for him that he is behaving like a complete mug but instead now he is behaving like a complete mug with dysentery. He stinks up any forum he posts on with verbal diarrhea. Cheers ![]() |

It is difficult to not bite back when he lets the personal insults fly. I have gone overboard in my reply's to people on here sometimes, but mostly i have apologised at the first opportunity, some have accepted, some haven't.
I think it is partly the nature of these forums that there is a tendency to overstate one's opinion, and we miss the nuances of a direct conversation and freely let the personal insults fly in a way that we would not do in a face to face coversation. We are all entitled to our opinion, just a pity that in some cases, myself included, it leads to personal insults. You both obviously have an interest in the Market. Wouldn't it be a better outcome if we all learnt something from each other, accepted that people had different opinions and refrained from personal insults in our response's? I'm working on doing that myself. Of course some people will continue with their insults in any debate. If they continue after you have made it clear you think they have gone too far, block them, and refrain from checking to see what they may or may not be saying about you. Cheers. |
