stick to collingwood monday mike, by your comments you know sfa about anything else.
Aussie P , its not just about the miners. Its about Labors propensity to tax tax tax and then get poor value for those spent tax dollars. Also you don't have to be too bright to realise that if the resources tax goes through it will be the start of more"super taxes" coles/woolies, banks will be next.Where will it end? Child care centres? Harvey norman? Anyone who makes a good dollar? The concept is abhorrent. Thats the problem with all labor govt.Your spot on that QLD asset sales are just an outrageous attack on QLD's assets.Once Bligh has spent the booty what will she do next?Oh yeh lets have a super tax on gold coast accomodation.Labor must be stopped. Anyway, fortunatly aussies are waking up and changing their minds away from rudd and bligh.Once changed its too difficult to change them back.NSW keneally is giving minor tax cuts and sympathetic spending in the election eve budget.Hopefully the people of NSW wont be sucked in. |

MrBen, one of my great fears in all this is for the generations to come.We (humans) are not generally built to look past 30-40 years( 3 score and ten thing) but my question is what are they going to do when it is all dug up and empty quarries all over the place ,poisions , run off into river systems. The propensity for false truths from corporations (not just miners) to pass things off as minimal environmental damage is appalling. The fact is no-one really knows until it is scientifically tested. For eg, the coal seam gas plans for Qld need to go on hold because the "bores" or "wells" can be lit on fire from the side effects already out of the Artesian Basin. What are we leaving behind ?
|
|
By:
agree aussie P , but thats a different argument altogether. This debate is about govt tax and spending. The digging up everyhting and selling it off is more an enviro/social argument.

Ok , I ll keep it to tax and spending ,and the "dig baby dig" mob

Miner's could be pay 58% - Wayne Swan
TREASURER Wayne Swan has admitted that some miners could be paying up to 58 per cent tax under the Federal Government's proposed resource profits levy. Mr Swan has also conceded that resource companies had legitimate concerns, undermining the government's $38 million taxpayer-funded attack on the Minerals Council of Australia's vocal media campaign. Asked if some resource companies could be paying up to 58 per cent tax, as the mining lobby suggests, the treasurer admitted they could. "Well there would be some super profitable companies that could reach that level," Mr Swan told ABC Television's Four Corners program. He also conceded that miners had a point, as the government prepares to hold a community cabinet in Perth to quell concerns in resources-rich Western Australia about the tax. "I accept that they have concerns about the tax. Yeah, some of the concerns are legitimate and that's why we said we'd work our way through all of the issues," Mr Swan said. Like a dagger through the heart of the Australian economy - Kevin Rudd & Labor are a threat to our way of life & prosperity - not to mention to 2 & a half years of waste, mismanagement, debt, backflips & broken promises. Don't be fooled, Labor & the Union's will launch a thick, deep & dirty campaign. But spin, rhetoric and desperate scare campaigns will only get you so far...... Seen the sorry state of New South Wales recently? - guess what, another 3 years of Rudd Labor - and the nation will be there. This election vote for real action on the economy, real action on immigration, and real action of hospitals - forget the tricks, spin & hapless policy-on-the-run of Rudd Labor. Ask yourself, what policy has Rudd Labor successfully implemented? and do you feel better off under Rudd Labor? Tony Abbott & the Liberal Team will fight for Australian families who are paying the price for Labor's record debt with higher interest rates and rising living costs - support real action. |
|
By:
Hope Rudd gets into the Australian banks next.....there been thieving of us for years now.

To be fair.
The current polling is encouraging for the Coalition, but John Howard came back from a similar margin & shocking polling in 98, 01 and in early 2004 - Rudd & Labor can win the election, thats for sure! But make no mistake, Labor are a little rattled by the incredible reversal in political fortunes - and so they should be - they have fallen from an incredibly high level of support. Those within Labor saying "Abbott can't win", too many hesitant voters & he scares people - consider that in 2007, a senior public servant, with no ministerial experience & not even 12 months in the leadership, coasted to victory? Now that all the hype, fanfare & balloons have all popped - the record after 2 and a half years to reflect on for Rudd Labor is not at all flash. Abbott can win this election and he is incredibly pragmatic, more so than the media portrays. The campaign will be incredibly gruelling, for both public & politicians. Plenty within the ALP are saying Rudd will "click into gear" when the campaign proper begins, well, geez, they'd want to hope so! |
|
By:
Abott has to come a fair bit more to the centre Jez,and actually convince the voters he means it.
It is bad public relations for them by been seen to close to Miners and accepting the cash. If Liberals came out with a watered down tax (increase on miners ) ,that may be a winner to get them over the line |
|
By:
Rudd will coast in $1.45. 2 terms look a reality. You can't be serious Abbott as Prime Minister, if Costello never left the sinking ship they would have had a hope. Sadly after Labour demolished the Liberals in the last Federal Election, Costello showed he had no fight, the Prince Charles of Australian Politics got on his white horse and retreated because he would have had to fight to become Prime Minister. After the election Abbott will be on his bike like all the other washed up Liberals who have challenged Rudd.

By:
You are spot on AP. I agree.
He is a right wing Liberal, no doubt, but so was John Howard. He has invigorated the party base and done over & above what I expected in terms of taking the gloss & exposing the flaws of Kevin Rudd & Labor. The Coalition are in a position currently that would of been the wildest dreams of party heavyweights six and a half months ago. The fight has only just begun though... Tony has to become publicly pragmatic and yes, in policy move towards the centre. If I were Abbott's adviser, like you say AP, I would of encouraged him to make some sort of deal with the Mining executives around an alternative "profits" tax method - this would demonstrate alternative Prime Minister material to the electorate.... ..And make Rudd look even worse than he does now. This tax kerfuffle is not going down well in the marginals atm. As a self-confessed political nut, I am gobsmacked by the polling I'm seeing, and its all bad for Labor - particularily in Queensland, Western Australia & Tasmania. Monday mike - by all means mate, take the $1.45 on a re-elected Labor Government - a word of warning though - betting money for the past 4 weeks has been all for the Coalition - and a week is a long time in politics mate, littlelone the time we have left not to mention the campaign proper itself - things can change in an instant, for either side. Incumbency is a powerful tool for Labor, but there is incredible disatisfaction with Kevin Rudd and the woes of Labor state government's is not assisting the "Labor" brand - the messages I've seen coming through in polling is the strong hyperbole from Kevin Rudd in 2007-08 has come back to severely haunt him - the electorate made a big decision to shift away from a "tired" Howard Government and they feel astonshingly let down. Don't dismiss the idea of them booting out Rudd! The old saying will prevail - Oppositions don't win elections, government's lose them. |

By:
Interesting your thoughts on Liberals doing deals with mining company's Jez, they won't change its about them not for the good of Australia.

STOP right now mike, your making too much sense... please get back to the lexus centre push before we get swamped with too much intelligent comment.

By:
I'm a little surprised this thread is still going, good to see it is though
Polls are pretty interesting at present, nobody wants the major parties and the Greens polling at record levels, do the Libs here really think Green voters will preference a right wing nutter like Abbott??? And another question for you - do you think the miners are paying enough tax??? It's nice to be back :) |
|
By:
To the first question Wombleoz re :Greens No , they will not
2nd Question , Miners should be happy to chip in more- Billionaires whinging on tv ![]() |
|
By:
AUSSIEp- come on the dabate is not about billionairs whinging on TV, think of the jobs lost, the foreign investment withdrawn, the projects delayed/cancelled.
Even that imbecile dudd is starting to see thats its just plain wrong. Abbott will win the next election.Dudd has done too much damage and the socialist cat is well and truley out of the bag. Here in QLD our horror story premier anna bligh is going to have a speeding cameras on every street in a desperate revenue bid.Its another tax, just called a fine.Lower the speed limits and call it "safety" when in fact its just to increase the number of fines.Even the police union head said it was not 4 safety but revenue raising.Labor must be stopped. 5/6 years from now everystate and federal will be liberal .We the people cannot afford labor. |
|
By:
MrBen, I agree with you about QLD ,need a change as the blatant disregard for the electorate.
The miners still need to put more in, Im convinced of that side of the argument.Im always looking above the Horizon Mr Ben and I have asked myself this question- what is(the landscape) going to looklike in 50 years for the next generation.Looking at the Hunter Valley is a good exercise in this. Are they looking after the environment now and into the future? Plenty of examples say they don't and won't. Liberals are a disgrace for siding with them when they should propose a alternative. They do need to pay more tax.Half of the miners advertising cost is rebated to them by the Gov't(Public funds)- our money, which needs to be remembered. The adjustments need to be made certainly , but comparing Aus as soverign risk to the mad despot's in Africa is lame. Ideally, imo you need the federal gov't to be opposite of the majority of state gov'ts for best outcomes. The economy needs to move to renewables on the health aspects alone, if this helps do it, so be it.It wouldn't matter to me who was in Gov't but I would expect some fortitude to stand up to the propaganda in our elected officials- but sadly this is lacking on both sides. It is worth remembering the Mining Industry dropped 35 % of their workforce when the GFC hit basically overnight, so Im not tumbling into their bullshit either. If you get a chance watch the last 4 Corner's program, about it, reported fairly from both sides |

Speaking of advertising Rudd Labor is oozing of desperation aren't they?
![]() Australian's have been inundated in the past few days with feel-good government advertising on the ludicrous health dept public servant expansion aka Health Reform, the over-budget consultancy exercise aka National Broadband Network, and Labor's proudly spruiked, rushed policy-on-the run - the Great Big Mining Tax. All this politically heavy advertising paid for by....YOU & I! And now we are greeted by Sunday morning papers running with the headline "Rudd, Dead PM walking". My how the tables have turned, my how the public have woken up to the shambolic, wasteful, debt-ridden, mismanagement & backflips that have been the hallmarks of this Kevin07 experiment. All spin, no substance rings true in every sense. Make it personal all you like Rudd Labor - because - you got a stinkin record to take to the upcoming election - and THAT, is the bottom line. Take the polls as a grain of salt, but the 62-38 in favour of the federal Coalition on two-party preferred in WA - similar polling coming in from Queensland. Kevin10? GOODLUCK! ![]() |

Kevin would be starting to get scared my his own shadow at the moment...imo

kevin 07 has the look of a beaten man when you see him on TV now. the longer they are in the more they are exposed as the incompetents they are.I'm so incensed by this fraud Rudd I'm even considering joining the libs to work against him.

By:
Mrben......the union movement bought the last election..[>o]
with Labor & the Unions you need all the help you can get... join my friend ![]() |

By:
The polls will be bad for Labor until the media starts to focus on Abbott - his got nuthin
In the end though, one number will win Labor the election - 5.2% unemployed, what would've it been with no stimulus??? Sooner Labor wins and Julia takes over (after the election) the better for mine, oh and the Greens get the balance of power in the Senate ![]() |
|
By:
Are you kidding me Womble?
Media focus on Abbott? Why would they do that Womble, they gave Kevin a free ride back in 2007? Short memory I see. And "his got nuthin". Tell me about the spectacular CV off Kevin Rudd when he took the Labor Leadership 12 months out from an election. LMAO. Seriously. also Have you been asleep for the past two and half years? I need to borrow a pair of your rose-coloured glasses. We've been listening to the "we saved you from recession" line since late last year from Rudd Labor. The electoral ectasy of 2007 has clearly worn off, the BS from Kevin07 no longer resonates with the electorate. We escaped the nasties courtesy of prudent economic management of the previous government - Rudd Labor has spent (granted) but gone beserk, like a drunken sailor - and the public know it! How can another 3 years of more heavily botched projects (insulation), public servant policy (health reform), backflips (ETS) and more taxes (mining for one).....be "better for mine" ? The Rudd Labor record heading to the election is horrid. Labor hard heads even admit to it. Never before in polling history has a government fallen from such great heights so fast & hard. A heap of various external issues in play in this election. P.S Sensing plenty of behind the scenes rumbling within the ALP. The headlines are screaming a leadership challenge. Remember, in politics, division is death - Buckle up comrades. |
|
By:
The reason they will focus on Abbott is that, as much as I wish it wasn't, it's a two horse race. That means there will be more debates etc - remember the last one of those Canberra Bookie? Rudd took Abbott apart on health - the worm hated Abbott.
Rudd had one very big thing going for him at the last election, he wasn't Howard - this time he has Abbott. It's a hell of a lot easier to manage a budget when the money is rolling in - Howard and Costello where there in good times, but even Costello will admit they could've done things better - i.e. there was too much vote buying / middle class welfare. I accept and agree that Labor has mismanaged some of what they've done but I'd also argue that if things were done at the usual speed government works at it would've been too late and we would've been in recession - we aren't and weren't. It's natural that there are nervous members out there, they are scared they will lose their jobs but they also know that it's too late to change leaders. You are right about external factors as well, there are plenty - a couple you might have missed are the miners overplaying their hand, did anyone else cringe when they saw Australia's richest woman, wearing her pearls, whinging about getting hit with more tax??? Add to that Queensland where even if they don't like him much, Kevin is a Queenslander and they will fall in behind him. More importantly though, the Liberal National Party marriage is falling in a heap. So overall, it'll all work out in the end, Rudd will win and Gillard will take over as our first female PM not long after [:D] |
|
By:
brilliantly put canberra bookie.
wombloz you are just as deluded as your comrade mates on here.Sorry but the electorate just is'nt buy that labor BS anymore.Scare tactics like work choices revival is easily seen thru by the electorate. Kevin 07 will step down b4 the next election because if he does'nt labor cannot win. Each poll from here will be a nail in 07's coffin.Gilliard will lead them to the next election. If she doesnt she will never be PM because abbott will be in for a decade or more as his sensible and responsible management gains hold.Aussies wont risk another Rudd disaster. Seriously only the most deluded and unthinking person would vote for 07 again. RIP the resources tax RIP- kevin 07 ps sell your 07 t shirts now on ebay cause soon they will be toast. |
|
By:
Womble you paint a v bleak future for Aust. Rudd winning the election & Gillard becoming PM & even worse still the Greens having the balance of power in the Senate.
hopefully the voters will have more sense & vote the libs back in. |
|
By:
future would be even bleaker with Abbott in charge Kye - running a country isn't just about running the economy
I'll try again, do you right wingers really think the miners pay enough tax??? They are OUR resources which can only be sold ONCE - we should make as much as we can out of them Kevin 10, Julia 2020 :) |
|
By:
they are not OUR RESOURCES in the same way as my house is not your house.
If I buy a block of land and stump up the building costs when the house is new and beautiful is it YOUR house? No its mine. Your ideolgy womble is that of a total communist, even china has abandoned those ideas.Nothing gets done without free enterprise and entreprenurial spirit. The resources companies found, developed and took the risks to get those resources available for sale-YOU DID NOTHING.They are not yours. Symbollically they may belong to the country but the rights of ownership must vest with the current owner. Wombleoz stop swallowing the total left wing failed ideas that the duddster and co keep throwing out.Socialism has failed- check out greece.Communism has failed so many times.China is communist in decision making only- its economy is totally free enterprise and china GIVES RIGHTS OF OWNERSHIP. Dudd is trying to tax those rights away by disguising it as "the people need to get their fair share" It is a total outrage.Wake up. |
|
By:
MrBen , a good example is Bouganville and the disasterous environmental impacts of a disused mine. Do you really think the mining companies give a f... about the environment.Id just be as happy if the gov't charged a environment tax on these projects as insurance against failed corporate responsibility. The world is changing as captialism is corrupted and regulation has to be made on the free enterprise market players.
The banks and Wall street players are a example of poorly regulated outcomes. Also , the disgraceful Qld Labour Gov't is smashing a $40 late payment fee on people paying their car registration late.Obviously the one's who struggle to pay it are financial tight at the moment- the banks have learned this practice is appalling and need better recovery methods/outcomes.But for the Gov't to do it is a fkn disgrace |
|
By:
aussie its been here for a few years now! i've got a renewal here and its upto 49.50 ...you get the option to pay 6 or 12 monthly but either way the penalty the same....btw i do pay on time they wont every get me...but as you say its the poor people who pay again....and guess what the fee goes up every year with cpi....one day it will get to 100 lol
the govt up here is dead in the water....the opposition quite ordinary but in front in the polls and hardly do anything....they dont have to...anna is fking it up all by herself..... |
|
By:
could'nt agree more.anna bligh is worse than dudd.I have not heard anyone from day to day life say a good word about her.Another labor disaster. In fact the cost of living here in QLD is skyrocketing.Electrity is dearer than gold.
Problem is the libs here cant get their respective heads out of their own rectums 4 long enuff to do anything about it. ![]() |
|
By:
Mrben - like someone said the other day, the price the miners pay for the resources is the tax they pay. If you take gold as an example, it's not long ago it was 1/4 what it's worth now - why shouldn't we, as a country, get an increased take???
|
|
By:
wombleoz- are you a card carrying member of the communist party?
If you read my previous post I think that explains it quite well why. Womble tell you what- you go to work today and after work you buy a new plasma. Then bring it to my place and give it to me so I can enjoy it.Tommorow you go to work again.Ill stay home watching the plasma.Thanks.After all why should I not get a share of what you worked for.Right comrade? |
|
By:
MrBen, I applaud your energy in this debate , but ... , that example you have given is utter tripe with no relevance
![]() |
|
By:
You need to assume Wombleoz owns the plasma and it increases in boom times. Still
![]() |
|
By:
or maybe it will go boom...like mine did and have to buy a new one
![]() |
|
By:
well maybe in relation to the resourses aussie P but certainly its a good example of the communist way.
I was listening to ABC radio this morning and some pollie raving on about more paid maternity leave and how there is no superannuation component attached to it during the leave. It made me realise that with all these labor govt we-australia as a nation, is heading down the path to socialism. If you stand back and consider the welfare, the govt spending, the tax system, govt policy and attitudes, left wing lunatics that abound , it is not such a far leap to imagine ourselves in the greece situation in 10 years. No amonut of super profits taxes will save us from this inevitability. Even if this tax gets thru labor will continue on its merry way spending and taxing. The goers of this country will get up and go, or retire. We will be left with socialism at best, a form of communism at worst. The chinese are investing heavy in africa which is rich in resources, a trillion of resources was just found in afganistan. We the aussie will slid into a banana republic.20 years from now australia will be unrecognizable compared to the pre rudd days if labor remains in power. |
|
By:
i consider myself a swinging voter...leaned towards labor last time around but mrben i think you are right on the money and this country cannot afford to keep going along the same path and as such will be swinging back
|
|
By:
Let's hope not MrBEN, but I do see some truth in what you are saying
|
|
By:
MRBEN.you forget that Abbot wants to sell medibank private to fund a payment of up to $140.000 for working mothers to stay home and have a kid .TRY and tell me thats not a socalist policy.
