but sports more popular in Norway than chess

By:
Haaland is a better question due to football being a bigger sport. Johaug might be more popular than them all.

pills for Novak.

Think having their dominant world champion at chess is a badge of honour for Norway, so would say he's mega famous there - though I take the point about sport always dominating chess generally for fame..
|
|
By:
some think chess is a sport also, though some debate it...

1.35 to 1.65 after holding first game of the set

I know he's huge in India. I think he's big in Norway as well. It helps to have someone be THE best in their sport, especially a smaller country as it puts them on the map.

chess is deinitely not a sport, majority of the game is memorisation, all the openings and end games have been worked out already, just a matter of studying, which only the few do to the enth degree, i.e the super grand masters, who've been playing the same and studying every day since the age of 6 and 7, it's only really the middle game where there more tactical chances and creativity at the very top level at least, sport is unscripted.
|
|
By:
it's like at the candidates jusst gone, and the previous candidates, most games are draws, that's why Fischer hated it and created fishcer random or chess960 as he thought chess was starting to become all pre-arranged thanks to the studying with modern computers, the best lines and 'theory', and as it turned out, he was right.

There's a massive debate about it being a sport/not - been going on a long time, as those who want it a sport point to other aspects much beyond memory alone. But it's a complex debate.
When you watch speed chess in novel positions or players short on time, it's far from just memory as they throw the pieces around to win. Sorry this is way OT while Novak poss losing is far more crucial ![]() |

I think we've seen Novak win his last slam

-500 Francisco Hoping pills kick in and his movement returns properly. Seen Novak win from here way too many times not to go for it |

I'm liking that book. Problem is knees injuries is something else that's just not about fighting pain.
|
|
By:
Not sure I've seen Novak with knee injuries before which is remarkable if true.
|
|
By:
Even if he gets through this, cannot see him grinding against players like Ruud and Zverev then the other biggie in a final - cooked IMO for the title...
|
|
By:
I would probably say chess is not a sport but if e-sport passes as a sport then the bar is set low.
|
|

The debate also uses some other dubious 'sports' for comparison e.g. darts, snooker, walking, climbing etc

don't get me started on darts! The ultimate chav sport.

sport for the horse!

Walking is a sport, just a very silly one. Climbing probably is, just incredibly boring as a spectator sport.
|
|
By:
I never totally write him off, as it's him, but I'd put odds big right now for the title....

13 outright now.

forum opinion question:
would this have happened to Djokovic anyway because he was so tired after Saturday night? is this knee injury thing a bit of a smokescreen to save face for his running out of steam? or no, this knee injury has ruined his chances today and he would have won otherwise... thoughts? |
|
By:
wouldn't put it past him to fake an injury for sure, whichever the reason...
|

sport includes the definition of 'physical activity' and 'skill'
you'd have a hard time convincing a judge a board game is a sport with that criteria, that are sitting down and having literally memorised hundreds to lines to know the exact top engine moves to play in each position at the top level, or any titled player level, that kind of pre arrangment and lack of phsyical exertion means it cannot possible be a sport, those that try to push it as a sport are chess geeks who want to seem cool by calling themselves sportsman. |

Novak can't have recoverd from the previous round
|

By:
no, I think the knee injury is real and a consequence of being old and the long match on Saturday.
would have won today otherwise, unlikely to have won the whole thing. imo. |
