Saw a graphic on reddit just now that said Björn Borg has the three seasons with the highest bagel rate in the ATP.

How very evil are the Madrid organisers and tournament director Feliciano Lopez? Rafa is a flaming fan of Real Madrid and they scheduled him to play while his team is involved in a Champions League semifinal.

Wiesbaden is a W100 in the high tech and internet centre that is Germany and they cannot get their livescores working properly. It is shameful.

Iga is just drowning herself in unforced errors far too often this year.

edy why have they scheduled 16 men's doubles match all on 1 day?

also, yesterday I read that Sinner struggled physically in his match with Kotov. he's dropped the opening set to Khachanov so will be interesting to see if he wins or not from here. suspect he could take the 2nd quite easily but then struggle again in the 3rd and lose. let's see!

they did it to give Nadal the most rest possible between matches. however, I still wouldn't be surprised if he withdrew before his match tonight if his body hasn't recovered sufficiently

doubles matches*
By:
edy
When: 30 Apr 24 16:51
Organisers had probably forgotten about doubles and then yesterday evening when it was time to make the OOP for today someone woopsied and put them all on today.
By:
edy
When: 30 Apr 24 16:52
As the final is scheduled for Saturday, so they will have to play a complete round every day now.
By:
edy
When: 30 Apr 24 17:00
Last year the first round of men's doubles was still spread out over three days in Madrid. So yeah, someone forgot to schedule them this year until today.

very strange scheduling. the women's doubles seemed to be going on as usual, but zero men's doubles matches until today. the organisers clearly not a fan of men's doubles Crazy

I know you're being sarcastic, they didn't "forget". do you know the actual reason though?

I do.

It's this new doubles format trial the ATP is doing.

Changes being trialed at the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open include:

More Singles vs. Doubles action. The 32-team draw will feature up to 16 slots reserved for teams entering via their singles ranking, creating an unprecedented number of matchups between the world’s top doubles and singles players, and compelling new narratives for fans.
Streamlined schedule over five days (Tuesday to Saturday) during Week Two of the tournament, providing a simpler and sharper schedule for fans and players.
Reduced shot clock to accelerate the pace of play and minimise downtime during matches. Time between points will be reduced to 15 seconds following rallies shorter than four shots (four or more shots = 25 seconds).
Quicker changeovers with fewer sit-downs to accelerate the pace of play.
Free fan movement in the arena during play, adding convenience to the on-site experience.

That first bullet point kind of makes me want to look up how many glorious singles players took the opportunity to enter doubles in Madrid.
By:

When: 30 Apr 24 17:08
The Medvedev/Paul teams looks like just about the only ones who might not have played otherwise.
By:
edy
When: 30 Apr 24 17:10
Not sure why the ATP possibly expected (top) singles players to enter if the plan was that they'd have to play doubles five straight days during the second week.

ah yeah. I totally forgot about that. I remember reading about it when you or caramba posted about it a few weeks ago. I don't think it's a very good idea

By:
edy

And they couldn't have expected secondary singles players to enter either really as those are off to Rome or challengers this week.

Yeah, I saw that. Kyrgios and Kust were right to disagree. Asking for a shirt afterwards is perfectly cool. Law just wanted to be cool and edgy.

The funnier thing about that episode is that Catherine Something complained about the disagreements and called them abusive (only the "moderately famous" actor was abusive imo)

Laugh it's insanity. they should do it during the 1st week with the final on Sunday or Monday if they wanted it to have any chance. still wouldn't have worked though!

Bublik regularly plays doubles. Just doesn't win very often.

Agree. Law was trying to portray this old fashioned British ethos of "show no weakness to your opponent, at any stage". you're meant to treat them as enemy kinda, so you wouldn't ever ask them for their shirt. is that just an old British thing or do other countries have oldies who think in this way also?

yeah. I don't enjoy that podcast with David, Catherine and that other guy. they have weird opinions and are often unnecessarily critical of players. they place great importance on their dumb opinions also.

ok. I follow women's singles, men's singles and women's doubles every week. at this stage men's doubles, especially outside of the slams, sort of doesn't exist to me Plain

By:

Didn't watch and I am not impressived just because someone bagels Mladenovic.

On the doubles once more: Where I can somewhat see a good reason for it is filling the second week to give the attending fans (and maybe tv viewers) more action during the second week of these dreadfully empty second weeks of these two week master events.
By:
edy
When: 30 Apr 24 17:37
That's way too many uses of "second week(s)" in that sentence.
