There's such a backstory to both the Williams sisters and Sharapova, two black sisters making it in a white sport and a Russian making the trip from Siberia to Florida at the age of 7 to make it in tennis, which helps a lot. This in compbination with them having captivating personalities on top of that makes them big stars.

Nadal has more US Open's than Djokovic.

The US ceremony is always awful. They haven't done the bragging about the money bit and sponsor brag which always comes across terribly.
|

Probably because the victor of the US Open series isn't there tonight.

These American hosts are always the worst at the slams, they always seem like they're away with the fairies.
Though in Australia, the speach by the Kia sponsors after the match is the longest speech made in sports post event, remember Novak/Nadal on the verge of collapse one year because they wouldn't stop yapping. Sue Barker does it well, concise, to the point and relatively short. |

shrink the US Open series and make sure it finishes before the NFL starts.

I forgot to post this for this event, ten years ago this year:

Nobody outside of the US really gives much of a s*** about NFL, it's popular in pockets, but it's not really massive anywhere else, it sells out Wembley because of the sheer number of tourists and American's there.

The 1980 and 1981 tournaments claimed the highest household TV ratings to date, with 5.8% of all U.S. households tuning in per telecast. In comparison, the 1999 U.S. Open telecasts drew just 3.5% of all U.S. households. By 2007, the average rating had decreased to 1.7%.
Reckon this is down to close to 1% by now. |

Tennis declined has tied in with stuff like NFL's rise.

maybe so, mes, but in a discussion about tennis' decline in popularity in the US it might be a good idea to avoid having your finals on opening weekend of the NFL.

Especially that article I quoted was written in 2008. So is talking up to 2007.
But eg. this suggests tennis has declined a whole lot more since 2007. Kerber’s three-set win ranks as the lowest rated U.S. Open final ever and is the least-watched since at least 2000. The previous lows were a 1.1 for multiple matches and 1.6 million for last year’s women’s final. No U.S. Open women’s final has managed a 2.0 rating sans Serena Williams since 2007, when Justine Henin‘s win over Svetlana Kuznetsova had a 2.1. Each final involving Serena or her sister Venus Williams has posted at least a 2.9. |

Kerber three-set win was against Serena..

Sloane v Madison did good ratings for 2017. I'm sure of it.

(for tennis in 2017)

I mean obv that would bomb. How on earth did it draw less viewers than Vinci vs Pennetta though lol? Was it simply because people tuned into the latter because they'd read about Serena doing the grand slam and then realised Serena was out lol.

A lot of Italian-Americans over there

I don't like tennis clashing with start of NFL, but US summer season is already short as it is.
|
|
By:
Yer it did. 1.9 is a good rating for 2017 without Serena or someone.
Eg. Novak vs Stan only did a 1.1 last year. I doubt Nadal-Anderson does a 1.9 today. |

What's amazing is how so few viewers in America is still insanely valuable. Like US Open is getting lowest ratings in the home country by a long way, yet the host broadcaster is paying the most for it by a long way.
Albeit I would like to see how much Wimbledon went for if it was actually up on offer, their rights go for way less than their true value to stay on BBC, however this is a vicious on circle as it staying on BBC is what keeps Wimbledon forever relevant. |
