the horse has to have the jockey on board when it crosses the line lol

what about grand national? still have some few quids standing week after, is it gonna be voided due to deaths of participants?

lame rule. If the horse is nice and fair, not crossing the path of anyone else to cut him off, and finishes the race first it deserves the prize.

not sure, not been following that

though I guess it has an advantage due to lower weight on it's back.

When: 26 Apr 12 22:19
even if jockeys are all like 5ft tall and 40kg.
By:

When: 26 Apr 12 22:19
but it would've had a huge advantage without 50kg of jockey on board

When: 26 Apr 12 22:20
what about jockeys that cross the finish line without horse?
By:

When: 26 Apr 12 22:20
when you do speed handicapping 1 pound of weight equates to 0.2 seconds difference in finishing time, so it's quite critical.

you mean if a horse thinks "screw you dude, stop hitting me already. I didn't sign up for animal mistreatment", throws the hockey forward and across the finish line before another horse comes in?

so is thera a limit weight on jockey, can he weight 20 kg for example to have advantage?
By:
nofx
When: 26 Apr 12 22:23
for instance yes

or if the horse is so gawdamn slow the jockey decides he's better of by himself
By:

When: 26 Apr 12 22:23
this would be ridiculois edy, jockeys would tend to stand on horse to jump in front just before finishCool

no. the weight a horse has to carry for the handicap is set, and if the jockey weighs less than that then weights are added to the saddle. if he weighs more then tough luck.

handicap? Does that mean different strength horses have different minimum weighs on their backs in the same race? Or is it just...Race A all horses 50kg, Race B all horses 52kg?
By:

When: 26 Apr 12 22:26
ctrlz, in that case jockey is obliged to carry a horse on his back me think

When: 26 Apr 12 22:27
there are non-handicap, where all horses carry the same weight, usually 9 stone, and handicaps where they all carry different weights based on prev perf to try and get close finishes.

imagine handicap tennis! aza vs woz handicap of 6 games?
By:

or the handicap weight
By:
nofx
When: 26 Apr 12 22:28
is the weight of the horse included in then? because it seems unfair to me
By:
good value losers
When: 26 Apr 12 22:29
no if it's a fat horse then too bad. the weight is just jockey plus saddle
By:
nofx
When: 26 Apr 12 22:30
so then you have a really fast jockey carrying a fat horse. it needs rule change really

handicap games in tennis...yeah...good head start.

For viewer's pleasure they should however always make the smaller chested player stuff her bra out to the size of the better equipped, but hence also handicapped (running to dropshots and stuff), opponent.

When: 26 Apr 12 22:32
there should be minimum weight standards to the stuffing obviously
By:
edy
When: 26 Apr 12 22:33
yes of course. If both are not impressive at all by nature they have to do a Serena.

a well known ruse with handicap horses is to deliberately run a horse slowly so it drops in the handicap, gets a light weight, and then when everything looks good ie ground conditions, strength of oppo, it's sent out to run for real. this isn;t considered cheating, but is actually admired as part of the game! the punters on here who cry fix all the time would have fits doing the horses.

how do you know they dont do the horse racing?
By:

When: 26 Apr 12 22:37
and you brits don't cry foul over that tactic in public? I thought you would be all for fair play in everything, every sport. In football it always seems like you condemn someone who dives (Drogba anyone? Wasn't he even booed by Chelsea supporters for doing it?) compared to some other cultures who praise it as clever and as you just said with the horses...part of the game.

they dress it up by saying in prev races the horse wasn't right, or the ground wasn't right. and if the slow running is too blatant they might give the jockey a token ban for a week.

and to be fiar, it's a bit like tennis players. horses aren't machines and a horse's form will fluctuate over the season the same way a tennis player's will. you can plot this quite easily.

true.

One last question: These races, they are on like every day, right? Are the stands typically filled? Or is that just the big races that the Queen visits too?

I was once pretty darn close to winning a weekend super special VIP exclusive trip to one those (Ascot?...not sure) in a betfair competition a while back. I think I would've skipped the race stuff completely and just visited London. Plain

I don't quite know....is there anybody who ever watches horse racing without having a bet? Simply as a sport because it's cool?

No, to my shame I have to admit that I do not even know his name and couldn't find the news about his death during a quick look either...

Nice to hear you like Baden-Baden, though I've never been there myself. Had some

racing at least 2 venues every day, usually more. stands aren't always bursting, but most meetings are quite well attended, surprisingly so imo
