Sports writers delivered us giggs as a winner, which was obviously a load a bollox in reality, that had to change
By:

When: 27 Jul 25 22:47
And they gave us that all male shortlist

This is part of the transition. It has happened, the rights or wrongs of it not relevant. It's all occurred to exert more control over the outcome.

I still don't see what results would have been different

You've just inferred that there could have been another Giggs type winner, and another all male shortlist. If they had not changed the process.

Which would obviously have delivered different winners. Impossible to categorically prove. For me it's a lot simpler to play in the knowledge that the bbc in all likelihood will get their preferred winner. And as far as 2025 goes, it's not Rory.

Giggs was 2009, all male 2011.  You seem to be on about something a lot more recent

It's a long time ago now obviously, I'm fairly sure Hamilton got a huge shove and there was a big political play about him being mixed race. As it was 'blm' year. Was it the Liverpool player that still nearly pipped him? Henderson?
By:
GeorgeBrush
When: 27 Jul 25 23:06
There's no vote numbers that i can see. Henderson basically did well because of covid fundraising

2020 that is.

Clearly you can disagree and think practically nothing has changed in the last decade. For me there's practically no comparison. Probably Mo winning due the live family hiccup was the first indication of the evolution (for me)

Nothing really changes. Beth tweddle got third for doing her physical jerks in studio ywars back

Mo won by a whisker in a terrible year

As I said let's hope Norris wins the f1 champs, and then we'll likely get to see who is right. We are discussing hypotheticals which cannot be proved or disproved for definite.

Shirley can't nom 2 lionesses?

Still got rugby to go too, and lions bashing the aussies
whilst stokes bashes the Indians.

Roars all around causes big Rory drift.

Bbc still spend plenty money on f1, sending the radio team to every race. Prominent coverage on the site. It's not like they try to ignore it say like this MMA.

Lando would also have all the recency bias

Best idea would be to give rory the lifetime so he doesn't get too grumpy and actually turns up

Rory will be in main SPOTY, he’s achieved the grand slam. He’s not anywhere near end of career. Ryder Cup seals his win in this…if they get stuffed the good vibes go and he’s vulnerable. I backed at 14/1 so hope he does win.

Chloe Kelly is tainted now as she declared she is a proud to be English. I expected her to be cancelled on the media this morning.
Hampton is the value…media over next 3-4 days could make her the real hero.

Come Dec BBC could be struggling to find 5 decent candidate's outside these ?

So, does look like after our earlier discussion we could well have a THIRD women's England footballer taking it again in short succession. I am glad I actually haven't played any bets on it yet - it ties up money for way too long for my liking, unless I see one like Keely last year that felt a cert.

But SPOTY has a history of repeating, endless cyclists for a boring period, F1 people taking it repeatedly (even without winning as brushy points out). So the women's footy repeating is not entirely new as a pattern I suppose.

Could well be the most pointless show on earth to watch though, without betting, if you are genuinely a sports fan (and not just a women's football fan) this year.

In terms of repeating, should have added in the Muzza's of course too - who could forget! Laugh

We're in that era, but I will do some repeating of my own. We bet on what will happen, not what should happen. Last evening was one of those moments you only tend to get with specials. A market completely wrong, and not correlating with reality.

It's still wrong of course, but slowly getting there.

The beeb are certainly extracting revenge for the all male shortlist for sure. The girls will be on the app hammering chloe, lando is the only danger unless there's a tennis longshot
Rory will get nommed, but supported by sad old blokes who can't be arsed

I'm just saying he could get the lifetime too, to add some balamce

One can even argue with the general lack of positivity in the country, yesterday's outcome was something most people can get behind. Rory's narrative just doesn't compare. Just another bloke hitting a ball around a field, as far as most of the voting audience goes.

Of course the shape of the nominations is not settled, it is a poser for the committee. Singling one England player out, potentially. I suppose the team of the year carve up is a theoretical, albeit unlikely possibility.
By:
stu
When: 28 Jul 25 12:11
Team of the year instead would be a killer move - but like you say, less likely given beeb would want one of the players as winner.

Much more likely to be a coronation, awarded both gongs. Two noms is more likely, imo.

Did Muzza's team get both gongs I think...?

Euro Women's Final peaked at 15.6m across BBC1 & ITV - slightly down on the peak of 2022.

They won Team, Coach and individual award with Mead in 2022. I imagine we'll see a similar clean sweep this year

Expect figures to rise further, as BBC One email says they had 12.2 million (and more on iPlayer)

Easily the most watched TV event of 2025 so far.

As cider and fig suggest, likely a 'coronation show' this year....

Indeed stu. Or a celebration. They'll hope that some of the stardust of the lionesses will boost their flagging ratings. So they're likely to feature prominently in the trailers

The stereotypical default winner. As I understand it, England weren't expected to win the tourney. As always with spoty you've got the double dynamic of will they win X, and then if they win X, what chance of spoty. Football (or any team sport) has the third dynamic as you can't always be sure which player will dominate the narrative if the team is successful. I believe the current jolly was benched for the final.
