I suspect if there was any chance that she was going to leave the competition all betting would already have been suspended.

I wouldn't have her winning under any circumstances but the old sympathy vote can't do any damage - bit of VT struggling around on crutches and then suddenly makes amazing recovery...perfect.

just caught the end of Zoe on LW on the +1.

She said Natalie is on the ITT show tomorrow and they will give out the up-to-date news then.

Before the news she was around a 13/8 shot, now she's about 2/1.  So roughly speaking the market is pricing in about 10% chance of a dropout.

Sound fair?

Most detailed report.

Natalie Gumede is 'determined' to appear on this weekend's Strictly Come Dancing, despite battling an agonising back problem,

The former Coronation Street star has been diagnosed with a 'compressed disc and sciatica' after been struck down in pain during training with professional partner Artem Chingvintsev.

But after undergoing physiotherapy and steroid injections on Thursday morning, the 29-year-old actress has vowed that she will be fighting fit again by Saturday night's show.
Fighting back: Natalie Gumede is 'determined' to appear on this weekend's Strictly Come Dancing, despite battling an agonising back problem

A Strictly Come Dancing spokesperson told MailOnline: 'Thankfully Natalie hasn't slipped a disc, but she is suffering from a compressed disc and sciatica.

This is when the central bit of a vertebrate bulges out due to tear in the outer, fibrous ring of the disc. She has had physio this morning and she is about to have steroid injections to ease the pain.

'She will not train today but is determined to dance on Saturday night. So we shall see.'

Natalie had to miss training on Wednesday and went for an MRI scan amid fears that she may have slipped a disc, which could have cast a shadow over her involvement in the BBC One show.

Gumede has already proved to be a dancefloor talent, topping the leader board again at the weekend after achieving a score of 36 from the awestruck judging panel for her rumba to Rihanna's Love The Way You Lie.

Artem said: ‘We had to finish rehearsal early on Tuesday because of the pain in Natalie's back - if it is serious she might not be able to continue.’

Waiting game: The actress has had an MRI scan and is waiting results to discover whether she can compete

A show source added: ‘She had a slight fall in training on Tuesday which may have contributed to aggravating an old back injury.

‘She fears the worst and would hate not to be able to perform on Saturday. It may be touch and go, we'll have to wait and see.’

Natalie, who became the early favourite to win the contest, is due to perform a quickstep to Yeah by Usher if she manages to compete on Saturday.

Favourite to win: Natalie who performs with Artem Chigvinstev has topped the leader board twice already

The actress hit headlines earlier this week when she received a waves of criticism from viewers due to her previous training, which many believe gives her an unfair advantage.

Shortly after signing up for the BBC One show it emerged Miss Gumede was listed as ‘highly skilled’ dancer on her agency CV and worked professionally in the industry until she suffered an injury aged 19.

The actress was previously credited for her abilities in cabaret, contralto, jazz dancing, Latin American and tap dancing, having started training at the tender age of four.

Corrie star Natalie Gumede is blogging exclusively for Yahoo as she tries her luck at Strictly Come Dancing this year with partner Artem Chigvintsev. She topped the leaderboard (again) with her rumba on Saturday night but was struck down on Tuesday with an agonising back injury and fears she may not be able to keep dancing...

By this point in the Strictly process, I'm learning to expect the unexpected. No surprise shocks me.

Saturday's rumba was fraught with mistakes, getting heels caught in my dress, and erm....shall we say 'improvised hairography' which was disorientating.

None of which happened in the dress run or any other rehearsal, but Artem supported me though all my faults, and because of the emotion of the dance we were lucky enough to get a great response.

By the end of the evening when we made it through the eliminations we were both feeling quite choked after what had been a long and tiring week, and I am really starting to realise just how much I love this process and how I want to soak up every moment and learn everything I can from the very BEST in the business.

This week we are dancing the quickstep, and upon hearing the music we were dancing to - a reworking of Usher's 'Yeah' - I was immediately excited. Artem's choreography is incredible, and we were having such great fun interacting through the dance that we knew were going to have the time of our lives on the Strictly stage.

Tuesday's rehearsal however, brought a nasty halt to the good time we were having. Part way through the quickstep I started to feel faint, and upon repeating the dance I started to notice my back seizing up to the point where I was unable to lift my leg. The next time I tried, an agonising pain shot from my bottom down my leg, and my lower back started throbbing.

What was particularly terrifying was that the pain was all too familiar, as I had had a back injury 10 years ago that has given me problems on and off ever since.

I was just so lucky to be with Artem at the time who kicked straight into action, as well the lovely people at Strictly. My life for the last 48 hours has been The Only Way Is Harley Street, and what a scary 48 hours it's been.

I've been through three GP appointments, two back specialists, an MRI scan and now an epidural/steroid injection - and I STILL don't know if I can dance on Saturday night.

The original fear was a slipped disc which has now been eliminated, but there is still some bulging of the disc and wearing of the facet joint which is causing nerve pain through the legs. Under normal circumstances, rest would be the order of the day - under these circumstances, I need to get physical in less than 24 hours to stand a chance of making the live show.

I am now waiting to have the steroid injection, a few hours after which my verdict will be delivered; but for now the jury is still out.

Small bit on the official site......

*Breaking* news... but not too broken we hope.  Natalie Gumede is suffering with sciatica and a compressed disc in her back after an old injury resurfaced this week.

Natalie, who is currently at the top of the Strictly leader board with 36 points, has had to miss two days of training to fit in an MRI scan yesterday and physio treatment this morning.  Although she and her dance partner Artem Chigvintsev haven’t had as long to rehearse, Natalie is determined to still dance on Saturday night.

We’ll keep you posted on developments as and when they happen, but in the meantime, we wish Natalie a very speedy recovery.

Prognosis[2]
The prognosis for acute sciatica is favourable for most people. The herniated portion of an intervertebral disc causing sciatica tends to regress over time and 66% of people have at least partial resolution after six months.
About 50% of people with acute sciatica report some improvement within ten days and about 75% reported some improvement after four weeks. However, up to 30% of people continue to have pain for one year or longer.
The prognosis is worse for women and people who initially have greater disability or pain

I could write you a 30,000 word dissertation on the diagnosis, causes, treatment, prognosis and rehabilitation of this form of sciatica

the crucial thing is to stop the activity which aggravates the pain as soon as possible because the pressure to the nerve can cause thickening (outer cells die due to pinching, but do not disappear, new cell growth then increases pressure causing further cell death and over time this leads to an increase in the diameter of the nerve which then is crushed more easily... and this leads to a lengthening of the rehab process with many never recovering completely)

My advice to Nat:  pack it in, get well come back in another series, continuing could cause serious long term problems

I am a Physical Therapist by training and have dealt with thousands of neurological conditions

Under the weight of evidence I`ve bailed, bringing her to level. Still too scared to bring her red, even though I don`t think she wins it. Just don`t want anyone SOOO good as a red. After all, judged on ability alone, she would be 1.01

I can't believe after having a back problem to warrant the above that she is thinking of dancing tomorrow.

Masking pain and carrying on doing something as physically demanding as this is a very bad idea.
