Iirc until quite recently Ladbrokes were the only major firm offering 1/5 1-2-3 on some of the Championship Cheltenham races, when all other books were going the now standard 1/4 1-2-3.
They have now fallen in line with the rest, although there must have been plenty of bets struck at the lesser place odds. |
By:
altho tbf 1/5 1-2-3 on those races is actually the "standard", 1/4 1-2-3 is a concession/offer really.
I'd rather complain about what the mongrels on course are getting up to these days than those who actually stick to standard terms. |

Completely agree with your post yesterday JR re: UK entry. Staging a proper song-writing contest instead of The Voice would definitely have been a more sensible way to go for the BBC. But SCD aside they have lost the plot with their Saturday night light entertainment fare...
By:
agree also.
Maybe better, more current people do get approached tho - but don't want the gig? I'd like Amy Macdonald, or someone of that ilk. |

Macedonia coming up with a new song - hard to imagine it being worse than the original effort.
By:
Denmark does have a nice song. But just keep tabs on Georgia, this song is getting some good reviews.
By:
Not sure why, but across so many years of Eurovision, yet again my favourite is Norway - (backed them so many years I think I must have been Norwegian in a past life!)
For me this year though I can't get past their entry - it just stands out for me. I'd say it's a better price than Denmark - only worry is they will take points from each other? |
By:
In a weak year, which this is shaping up to be, it usually advantages a voting powerhouse with a solid entry (think Azerbaijan 2011).

With trashy Serbia & Armenia, without Turkey, powerhouses that remain are Russia and Azerbaijan. Don't think that Russia can get enough televote support to win with this. Am I thinking about Azeri again? Would it be to soon to win again? Maybe, maybe not...

lol true. This is Ukraine though and not Spain or Austria
By:
Overall I'm very much with jr. This has the same feel as when Azer won. No standout song that looks likely to run away with it, so all my big greens are away from the top of the market.
Denmark being a similar price to Eurphoria and Lena is insane |

Bizarre meoldifestivalen. I said above I didn't like the odds on fav to win it and he finished last with the juries and won the pv easily

My one mistake was laying Denmark too early. Just laid some 4.1. I do have £2.50@ 20/1 tho

Been a change in the voting system apparently.
Now the juries will rank each song 1-26th and combine with the televoting results 1-26th, so whoever tops either gets 26 points Should kill off a lot of diaspora voting if they vote for a bad song the juries hate. |
By:
Is that the reason why they are doing it or haven't they said? So much to google so little time.....
By:
Dunno where you heard that Orlaith, but a load of rubbish lol.
Voting same as in recent years. Both juries and televotes award 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Jury and Televote points then added and top 10 ranked again with televote taking precedence in case of ties. |
By:
Apologies Orlaith, I have just done some more checking, and although it has not been widely publicised, it looks like this is the case.
So, to recap. Juries will rank 1-26 Televoters will rank 1-26 Totals will then be added and top 10 awarded marks 12, 10, 8-1 as traditional at ESC. The implication is as you said, songs recording a high PV but disliked by juries or vice versa could miss out as lower mid-table songs climb above them. |
By:
Explained better at http://esckaz.com/2013/
Original source of info is from the EBU Rules http://www.eurovision.tv/upload/press-downloads/2013/Public_version_ESC_2013_Rules_ENG_FINAL.pdf |

Probably why Turkey withdrew!
I'm surprised it took so long for any of the fansites to notice the rule change. |
By:
I guess it's because the headline of 50-50 jury/televote is unchanged, just the technicalities of how that combined ranking is determined. If the rule was in place last year though, it would have probably seen Russia finish lower, with Turkey and Italy out of the top 10. Germany may well have been in the top 4.
By:
Could mean a middle of the road Lion King type ballad winning
Certainly be harder for one of the off the wall ones that the juries love to win I'd have thought |
By:
Can anybody think of results in recent years which would have been different with this system?
It makes the results easier to understand at least. |
By:
Well yes, Italy 2011 would not have finished as high as 2nd.
By:
Jedward with Lipstick would have probably been top 4.
By:
Basically, it's likely that songs scoring in the top 10 with both Juries and Televoters would have placed higher, and those way down on one of the metrics would be lower.
It's hard to say exactly as we only have their top 10's to go on, we don't know in what order they would have ranked the remaining songs. |
