Best UK entry for ages - in a part almost Cohenesque 'Take This Waltz' sort of way. On first listen there isn't anything else as melodic. I can see it doing pretty well although given the make-ip of the voting sadly it can't possibly win. From a betting point of view probably best to look out for match-ups with countries who are as unpopular as we are.
By:
It would be a good entry for 1973
By:
Spot on - the vintage period for Eurovision was the late sixties through the early seventies.
By:
"Best UK entry for ages"...i agree, just a shame he got trap 1...it would probably be in my top 4 with a better draw as there is an awful lot of rubbish this year imo.
By:
The UK also won the ESC in 1976 from trap 1 - it's a whole different competition now and trap 1 is a significant disadvantage.
By:
Brotherhood of Man - those of the quality flares and dance moves
By:
Personally I think the song is very average and that Blue last year was a much better song and would have placed much higher with a better vocal and staging.
By:
..also agree that trap 1 for a ballad is a massive disadvantage in a final of 26 songs.
By:
Before the draw I'd said I'd be looking for 50+ for UK, now I'd maybe risk a few quid at 500 but probably not. Thats just how I see its chances on the winners market
![]() I'm sure some will think I'm exagerrating for effect but I'm not - the song is better than those odds but the draw has realistically killed any chance it had. Why its the current price is beyond my comprehension. (19.5 to lay) |
By:
As for being Cohenesque. If he'd produced something of the quality of this then he might have been worth bet.

All the big lay money on Russia has been taken today. A lot of ESC traders must be looking at big liabilities on the grannies.
By:
Jeez those Russian grannies are just awful...although the little one on the left does actaully have a better singing voice than the female that won last year
![]() |
By:
Not such good cleavage tho.
By:
my Gran (dead 5 years) has a better voice too
By:
i just don't get the granny gig at all...i understand the sentiment involved...but they all still fart and pick their nose's so why the short price?...just as well sit them in rockers on stage doing some knitting, they would still get the same sickly adulation from the audience FFS !

By:
Maybe Putin has bought another vote
By:
Great question, zoom. Looks like the price is going to shorten further. So if you haven't laid Russia yet, then a better laying opportunity probably lies ahead. I'm still struggling to see how they can win with zero jury votes, but if they blitz the televote maybe there is scope for an unprecedented situation to arise. I would still expect voting blocs to stand in their way of truly smashing the televote enough to win without any jury votes. I would like to think feeble-minded sentimentality isn't ingrained across the whole of Europe, though I'd back the UK to give them 10pts on the televote (probably only Jedward capable of beating them here) but we are a nation of emotional f*cktards in part courtesy of the Syco machine that has brain-washed tv watchers over the last decade or so, and we are not representative of all of Europe, thankfully.

GB gives 12 points to Sweden imo

GB give 12 pts to Spain imo.

By:
8pts max on televote for Sweden from UK imo. All depends on our jury. Bizarrely, our jury gave Switzerland 12pts last year so I wouldn't hold your breath GB2.

GB 12 points to Israel (with a surge of musical taste)
By:
Maybe

Sadly, I think it's pretty much a given that UK ESC voters have lousy music taste, stu. They are dictated to more by sentiment and novelty. The 12pts for Ireland doesn't show us in a great light, and nor does the 8 televoters gave Iceland, and 7 to Lithuania
. Moldova got 10pts. I enjoyed the Moldova tune, even more the staging of it, but it certainly wasn't the best, and bagged that score by being eccentric. |

Love your rant at 22:07 last night night johnny. Spot on assessment of the UK voting. All those years of Wogan saying that it was fixed etc. yet UK is just as jingoistic and bizarre in its choices - the difference is our idiosyncracies don't match those of other countries so it's 'we're right, rest of Europe is wrong' scenario.
I don't mind that we'll almost certainly give Ireland the 12 this year - there's a logic that Jedward will score well as they have a lot of fans here, plus it's an OK song. But some of our other voting last year was strange to say the least! Everyone knows Georgia should have got the 12 ;-) |
By:
Any reason why Paddy Power have Ireland favourites to beat UK in their match market but a longer price in the outrights? It appears by selecting these clowns for the second year running that Ireland have given up and would expect UK to dot up.
By:
I guess it's because Jedward are a known quantity in Eurovision.
The song doesn't strike me as being anywhere near good enough to win, but they should get a reasonable placing. UK harder predict. Especially drawn 1. |
By:
I guess it comes down to the fact Ireland have to qualify to make the final, automatically adding a few points to their Win odds.
Is it a bet that is void is Ireland don't make the final. That would make sense then in that case |
By:
That's true honest.
I remember some firms having that rule last year, but even those who did still paid out on the Greece v Turkey H2H iirc, even tho Turkey failed to qualify |
By:
Yeah, I'm pretty certain you will collect on h2h bets if one doesn't qualify, unless it clearly states otherwise.
By:
Can't see any reason not to collect - if Ireland don't make the final then UK have done better.

Any live versions of Greece yet Funky? ;)
By:
fll...you should know better young man...Azer and Lena were both absolute sh!t on the night...yet they both won !
the result of this gig are known well before the final performances...i'm not worried at all about 'live' this year...Greece & Norway are totally different class to anything else imo. ![]() |
By:
The big difference is that Lena's amauterish charm was a huge part of her appeal and the appeal of the song.
If the girl she beat in the final of the German selection process had won instead, Germany would have been lucky to be top 10. Last year Azer was an excellent song, brilliantly staged. The odd flat note from the female singer was never going to make much difference. Greece is just a generic euro pop tune that doesn't stand out apart from the attractiveness of the singer, which is hardly an advantage when most voters are female or gay. |
By:
"Greece is just a generic euro pop tune that doesn't stand out"...stands out like a lump in a leotard fll...you have got it wrong again "haba haba"

don't know what you other guy's think regarding the current market standings...i have Greece 2/1 Norway 3/1 Sweden 7/1 UK 10/1 Romania 12/1 with 20's bar the 5...yes i have listened to all the songs and bar these 5...they are all pretty poor imo.

I think you're off your rocker funky

on the contrary ffl...i'm the only sane one on here...you 'specials' punters are 10p short imo
