There is something unique and bin shaped here. Farage may have his diehard supporters but there will be plenty who will be delighted to vote for anyone apart from him.

tobermory - HIGNFY used to be unmissable in the early days but it started going downhill when they got rid of Angus Deayton. He was quick witted, funny and articulate, everything that Hislop and Merton are not. The brilliant assassination of the show by Harry and Paul in the Story Of The Twos still makes me chuckle.

The man behind Binface has actually been involved with some scriptwriting for HIGNFY, not sure to what extent, but i hope his campaign in Clacton is funnier than the show is now Grin.

agree about Banksy, no idea what the fascination is with the guy apart from his true identity. Would you believe according to BBC news , 5 babies were given the name Bansky by their idiotic parents in the UK last year ? Poor kids.

Some people find stuff funny, like when people
try to tell you stuff isn't funny, because it ridicules
their life choices and they feel small.

Binface is a funny guy, but maybe to refukers he was funnier
when tackling Burnham than farrage.

Tempting though it is, haven't had a bet on this yet. Hoping for percentage share of the votes markets for the two main contenders.

Doesn't stand up does it.

The opposition to Reform have chickened out after being offered a by election to get rid of their arch enemy, and the offician liberalist opinion is that it's a joke because they have all chickened out. But when there is another by election in a few months, in the same seat, against the same original MP, they won't chicken out (apparently).

And this fatface that the uni party is getting behind is archetypal establishment, oxbridge and 'works' for the bbc. lol.

donny, he is mildly amusing as an eccentric character in a by election wherever it may be held but that's about it, nothing to do with the location or who is expected to win it.

The monster raving loony party "manifesto"  is much funnier than Binface's.

HIGNFY lost the plot years ago, they are too cowardly to really go for Starmer and the hapless Labour party even though they have been the government for the last two years (someone really should remind Hislop of that fact). They prefer to trot out the usual lame jokes about Trump and Boris (yes even now Cry). A once great show is slowly dying on its arris. Shame, as in it's heyday it was very good tele.

Farage stepping on his own rake and being pitted against a bin is undeniably funny. This could have been a great episode of the thick of it.

Its just that the bin isnt funny

I don't get the joke. Could be just me, I guess. The legacy parties aren't using the opportunity of trying to get rid of Farage themselves as they couldn't win, and that's funny?

It's probably having a fine spin job on legacy media, to completely distract from the other parties being too scared to run against him.

donny i don't pass judgement on such things without watching/listening to them. Good advice to others i'd say Grin

Starmer and co's shenanigans over the past two years have been rich pickings for proper satirists, HIGNY of old would have crucified them but Hislop in particular cannot bring himself to do it, he's a coward who would rather prattle on about old hat targets, Trump being orange and Boris being a buffoon. He is an embarrassment these days.
Merton hasn't updated his "act" since the 90's, it was funny then but it passed it's sell by date long ago.

Bring back Harry and Paul - how to brilliantly lampoon  HIGNFY/QI/Mock The Week/Buzzcocks in 3 and a half minutes - treat yourself donny :

Someone made an accurate observation, someone that actually does go door to door. Twenty years ago, they could go to a really nice property, gravel drive, couple of decent cars parked outside. They'd be almost certain that they were tory voters. Now they go to the same type of properties, and they are no sure if it will be labour, greens or lib dum.

Surely 1.15 is value, all that wealth vs a nobody without a plan, who also likes the pub.

Or is it?

If you had to kick one of them, who are you kicking the comedian, or the billionaires?

I took 7/1 Binface myself. As I said previously, the idea of a candidate being elected unopposed motivates people to vote for any individual that will stand.

And Pleasegiveme is right that Farage has stepped on a rake here.

So I'd expect a minimum 25% for Binface, but of course the left would love to humiliate Farage so any typical Lib/Lab/Grn voters in the town will turn out.

The people who'd be happiest of all at a Farage loss would be 'Restore' supporters. If Binface just stood there in his costume he would definitely get those too but if he keeps talking he will just reveal himself as another lefty rather than some 'anti politics' figure. His jokes mostly seem on the level of 'Liz Truss crashed the economy'.

Dixie,

yeah Deayton was good, but so were Hislop and Merton back in the day.

HIGNFY was always bashing the right more than the left, but did a good job on both in the 1990s. It was fair enough as Thatcher was still PM when it began.

It was great for the first 5, maybe 10 years, and had an appeal to anyone who followed the news, regardless of their left/right leaning.

It had run out of steam early 2000s and should have ended then. Most of the audience drifted away just because the format had become stale, but leftie viewers stuck around for the Tory bashing as quality matters less to them when the ideology is 'correct'. And from that point the show increasingly pandered to their remaining viewers.

Will Fatface actually be the only other runner on the ticket?

The speaker traditionally runs uncontested from other legacy parties each general. It doesn't seem to bother the chattering classes.

As I said, it doesn't stand up. The only reason that he is 'unopposed' as you put it is that the legacy parties are too chicken to oppose him. Not some kind of blob stitch up, or cancelling elections (which they have already tried).

I get that there's very lazy people around, but if you are motivated enough to go to the polling booth and vote for Fatface, you know exactly what is going on. Maybe in Islington, Bath or Brighton, seems less likely in Clacton.

The irony of course is the actual genuine 'unopposed' scenario is the establishment's next pick for prime minister !

By:

Others would read it as who, why and for what Farage was given multitudes of millions which he didn't really declare until outed. He then tried to get the 'moral high ground' by declaring he was taking on the 'establishment' by resigning and trying to get re elected when he is/was under severe pressure to explain.
All parties knew his 'game' but decided not to play ball particulary as it is Clacton, rightly and nor should they.
No win situation for him, the claims that the rest are 'scared' is all he can really say but that is for the thickos, net result he has done himself up like a (U)kipper.
Haven't bet on this,i think the Bin will do better than expected and always the chance that more comes to light on the real question of all that money which at a worse case scenario means he will pull out.

Police have reportedly begun a criminal investigation into half a million pounds in donations to Reform UK, allegedly made by the mother of a financier who paid for security and social media support for Nigel Farage.

According to The Times, the Metropolitan Police are looking into potential offences around "the evasion of restrictions on donations".

Reform's deputy leader Richard Tice described the reports as a "politically motivated smear".
Fiona Cotterell has not commented.
