Labour had a majority of 174, will probably be 172 soon once the MMA MP is kicked out and we have a by election. The Liberals are basically Labour with a different colour rosette. The political opposition in parliament will not be able to do anything that will impact legislation for 4.5 years at the earliest. The disaster now is far more prescient.

Kemi will be a good opposition leader, who will hold the government to account (which is a good thing for democracy). And she has four years to demonstrate whether she is prime minister material, something which is not obvious at the moment. Nigel Farage is not impressed by her, but whether that is because she blames him personally for ruining the Torys' electoral chances or simply because she is an obvious threat to Reform UK, it's hard to tell.
I know that there are a lot of people on here who would want the parties that they don't vote for to have abysmal leaders, so that their preference wins. But I don't. So chances of a merger between Conservatives and Reform look remote. I think we are better off with good leaders of all the parties. I want this government to do well, but I have my doubts while Starmer is in charge. I hope Kemi does well, but when it comes to the next election I could still vote for Nigel as he seems more pragmatic and willing to make the sort of deals which will be necessary in a future hung parliament. |

Disaster lol.
And refuk scrapping and split over whether to sidle up to tineh tommeh temper |
By:
Her own MP's don't rate her.
She'll be gone before the end of next year and they'll shove Cleverly in. YW |
By:
PP I remember you backed Cleverly. He has now gone to the back benches voluntarily. Will you be backing him again?

Badenoch gets 53,806 votes.
Jenrick gets 41,388. Party membership is 132,000. 40.8% bad enoch 31.4% stumpy 28.8% couldn't be bothered who leads the sh1tshow |
By:
My main bet will be on year replaced.

28.8% couldn't be bothered who leads the sh1tshow
Boris & Lizzo fans |
By:
Yep, that is a strange one. I'd have thought one of the big things about being a member of a political party is to take part in electing a leader.
By:
I was once a Conservative party member. Their club had the best snooker tables and the beer was decent and cheap.
By:
That 53,000 vote she won was less than what Rishi Sunak lost with in 2022 when he lost out to Liz Truss.

By:
Little chance of them seeing power while the lunatics are in charge of the asylum

Kemi Badenoch suggests to @bbclaurak that the problem with Partygate was not Johnson and his No10 team breaking Covid rules, the problem was the rules themselves.
The Tories really haven’t learned anything have they? |
By:
Except how to keep giving
By:
Grasping at straws here.
You forget that Badenoch resigned from Johnson's government. Be interesting to see who she picks for Shadow Chancellor, home secretary & Health secretary. I think she may throw in a surprise or two. |
By:
Oh so she resigned and now defends him, today, but
the thing you take is that she resigned. It's you straw clutching. |
By:
There aren't many left to pick from.
The main reason why I could not back Jenrick, and I stated before the outcome was that a lot of Tory members have moved to reform, and they would be more inclined to go with Jenrick if they had not. That's where the almost 30% not voting comes from, registered members who they have effectively lost. I do think the one nation types will be looking to get their own person in, so yes it will be difficult for Kemi in the medium term. Her advantage is that they are almost as obsessed with a person's immutable characteristics as labour, liberals and snp. |
By:
Starmer and Co broke the Rules , nothing done , Rayner was not there then suddenly was there , How many more were there that Our Fine PM forgot
By:
Are they too thick to vote for Jenrick and merge?
By:
she's odds on not to be contesting the next general election in my book. her first big challenge might be reform winning the by election.
By:
Wait for the Council Elections in May , Reform will wipe Labour out
By:
Casemoney still can't grasp months of partying against rules
compared to working lunch within rules,... He will never get it. He's against xr blocking roads but in favour of farmers doing it. |
By:
nfc chance of merging, with Nigel around. reform will be concentrating in making further inroads into labour's thin support, which shouldn't be difficult.
By:
Splitting right wing vote is great news.
By:
Zia Yusuf is a man to watch, if he tries to get elected I suspect he is being prepared to take over the party at some point. He's already a superior 'politician' to the vast majority of people who are already MPs. My instinct is that Farage doesn't want to be PM but he thinks Zia could be. But obviously a long way to go, very difficult to break through the duopoly, lamentable as they are.

I'm all for anything that will show the Distain that the Majority of the Public now hold for these lying grifters
I would imagine there will be a few other supporting Protests on the Day ... Just a third of Britons (35%) now have a favourable view of the Labour leader,That was a month ago wonder how he will fare in the New Year Take away Civil servants The unions and Public sector workers , thare would not be a lot left |
By:
I think Kemi has a touch of thatcher about her. Only time will tell if she grows into her role, who knows she could become quite a phenomena.
Many tories disliked thatcher and thought her unworthy of respect to start with. |
By:
There would be no future for the Conservative Party if it had made leader a Farage tribute act. Jenrick is hopeless.
By:
There is no future for the Conservative Party. Hope that helps.
By:
If only that were true. Happy days.
By:
The Conservative Party forms the Opposition, Cider. You can’t just parachute a candidate from the margins on the right and deem him leader of the opposition. That would not be British.
By:
Farage wants to be the main opposition in parliament from the next election. A lot can happen in four years, they can make gains in local elections, by elections, regional administrations eg Wales. They can easily peel off Labour and Tory voters and more importantly, get people to vote who sat out the last one. It's definitely achievable, whether it will be actually achieved or not, who knows.

Kemi Badenoch appoints Mel Stride, Priti Patel and Robert Jenrick to shadow cabinet
Lol |
By:
Is there a chance that the current conservative leader will be replaced?
University fees up. Jolly good! |
By:
My hunch is that she will only be replaced either at the ballot box, or after a spell as PM. Tories are now shaken by changes in leadership, and inconsistency. Now they will want stability and after seeing how Kemi demolished Rayner a few months ago in House of Commons, she could step up to the plate and make things very uncomfortable for Starmer. This will be the only thing going for the Tories in the next few years and I think they will take run with this, at least up to the next GE.
By:
I was talking about Starmer!
By:
Bad Enoch is not a dope although I do think she is deranged. The big problem she faces is Farage and the racists in Reform. Local Elections in May.

.. Can't see it whispering, but,... Give it 30 months, perhaps. |
By:
I think everyone is fed up. These Labour loons have no idea who they are supposed to represent and will lose the old and the young. The Farmers never voted for them although they did vote for Christmas 60-40 to leave the EU.
I would not be surprised to see Reform make a move in May although it will not last |

Priti Patel, shadow foreign secretary
Fcuk me Kemi, that's the worst appointment you could ever make. |
