Keir Starmer to create team to tackle ‘national security’ threat of people-smugglers

Keir Starmer will describe the border crisis as a “national security” threat this week and launch a team to catch people-smugglers, UK government sources have confirmed.

The prime minister is expected to address irregular migration at two events this week amid growing concern within No 10 that small boats arriving across the Channel will remain a crucial issue during this parliament.

His language will be closely examined by refugee organisations that have warned that the government should not demonise people seeking asylum in the UK.

Starmer will use a speech at the Interpol general assembly in Glasgow on Monday to announce funding and powers for officers to launch anti-smuggling operations.

UK asylum system would descend into chaos without more hotels, says minister

Angela Eagle said short-term solution necessary despite Labour election pledge to end use of accommodation

The asylum system would “descend into chaos” if Labour refused to open more hotels for people seeking refuge in the UK, a Home Office minister has told the Guardian.

Angela Eagle, the minister for borders, security and asylum, said officials had been forced to find more private accommodation for new arrivals and blamed the backlog of tens of thousands of cases built up under the last government.

The government’s decision to open asylum hotels despite Keir Starmer’s pledge that he would close them have been condemned by the Tories and Reform.

In Labour’s election manifesto, Starmer said he would “end asylum hotels, saving the taxpayer billions of pounds”.

It was a massive mistake to scrap the Rwanda plan without first coming up with a working replacement.

Starmer now flailing about rudderless and hosing the problem with employer NI money.

Personally I believe one of the innumerate socialist "welcome refugee" mob thought the population of Africa was 1.52 million and they are going to try and squeeze them all in.The grown ups in the room may soon work out it is 1.52 billion but don't hold your breath.

Despite all your posts it's not clear what your really want.
Do you agree with Starmer that we should stop the boats from  getting here?  (His solution is "smashing the gangs".)
Or do you want to welcome everyone who makes it across the channel illegally and give them British Citizenship?

So I just asked you a question and you weren't able (or willing) to answer it.

"On here" is not real life, you should keep that in mind.  Keep things in proportion.

Starmer told the Sun on Sunday: “Organised immigration crime does not stop at our borders and cannot be defeated by one country acting in isolation.

“The UK is rebuilding its alliances across the world so we can take down these gangs that trade in human misery and the hope they find in their victims.

“No more gimmicks or wasted money – these gangs must be stopped, our asylum system brought under control and our borders secured.”

Keir Starmer will describe the border crisis as a “national security” threat this week and launch a team to catch people smugglers, UK government sources have confirmed.

So he is talking tough at last, now that the budget is finally out of the way.  Let's hope it works out well.

The results are now in for October:
The Home Office said 230 people crossed the English Channel in small boats on Thursday. During October, 5,417 people made the crossing, the highest monthly figure since October 2022. The total for 2024 so far stands at 30,661.

These were the same people who defended Bunter lying to Parliament and the Queen

It’s pretty hollow. Not here to defend Labour either.

Add to that the General state of glee at the pictures coming from Greece and Italy of migrants pouring into Europe the same hippocrites laughing that it was not our problem since we had left the EU but it was and is if they keep coming.

Italy and Greece did not get the help they needed at the time because of the selfishness the rest of Europe including us.

These people will keep coming. We have exoorted our brands if Terrorism across the Middle East, African and indeed all over the World.

They will continue to come and Europe as a whole, which, we are part of need to cp-operate to deal with this situation.

Smashing the gangs, what a joke. The people in charge have no idea. The Labour detractors here are as pathetic as Starmers attempts to combat this
