Rishi Sunak has vowed to bring back National Service for 18-year-olds to create a “renewed sense of pride in our country” in his first major policy announcement of the election campaign

Is he insane?

The last 17-year-old young men to enter National Service did so in 1960, and the survivors of that cohort are now 81. No women at all. The subset of geriatric men with fond memories of it is rather a niche vote.

Can see this being very popular with parents wanting rid of their lazy badly behaved kids for a bit
If they think about it there’s a lot of votes in this policy

Lots of 18 year olds had no intention of voting before this.

Some of them will now, against a tory unaffordable pipedream.

No way parents vote for this, I am one and this is the biggest no-no out of all policies by any party. Even the Looneys make more sense nowadays, honestly!

We'd need some new regiments for all these youngsters.... 1st Armoured Trans Division etc

Don’t kid yourself , most people in the country would be glad
to see the back of them and think it’s a good thing generally

It's okay, they don't have to join the army. They can spend one weekend a month picking individual turds out of their local river!

Who will supervise the 700,000 18 year olds during
National service?

How much will it cost?

Will we need more immigrants to look after them?

National Service isn't the way to restore pride
in our country amongst its youth.

Getting rid of the Tories is.

WOW Ridiculous, not heavily into politics but this is disgusting, I will not have my grandchildren been sent out to fight in some **** hole war loving country, I wasn't going to bother but will now vote against the tories.

@lfc1971 Mine are at home, yes. Primary school age. My nephew is secondary school. No way this would be popular across parents. If there was any chance they get reelected I would be planning to leave in the next 10 or so years but thankfully the chances are below 1% and the chance of this policy happening is below 0.1%

The tories have run out of sensible manifesto promises.

Over the last 15 years the tories have promised and failed to deliver pretty much everything the majority of UK citizens want.
From strong and stable to a clamp down on crime, low taxes to low immigration, A Thriving economy to a Thriving NHS, Doctors appointments, Dental appointments, Oven ready trade deals, taking back control, levelling up, low inflation, stopping the boats, and a hundred other unfulfilled promises.

National service is them scraping the barrel because they've nothing left to promise that they haven't already promised and failed to deliver.

I'm expecting them to promise a clampdown on seagulls stealing chips at the seaside next.

There's nothing the British want that they haven't already promised.

No wonder this country is in a mess with feral children
The problem is the parents, as we can see on this forum! in 90% of cases
They could do with a spell in the Army also

Germany had National Service until 2011,
when it was put in abeyance This consisted
of three months of combat training, then three
months service at the assigned post.
The conscripted soldier would normally reach
the rank of Obergefreiter

During his service he got free health care,
housing, food, and a railway ticket allowing
him to travel between his home and the
military base. Conscripts got paid between
€9.41 and €10.95 per day of basic pay …excellent!

Now stopped , that will be another country gone to pot

if you had to think of one single policy to finally sink the tories, as if their fate wasn't already sealed, then you announce you're bringing back National service, Jesus wept he really is amazingly clueless, not only will no 18 year old now vote for them, parents with 18 year old kids will also not vote for them, 18 being the start, with the aim to gradually increase the age over time, probably with the ultimate aim of reducing unemployment figures. Any parent with kids will now think twice.

He really is stupid, their only chance is to get rid of Sunak even with 6 weeks to go. Who told him this would be a popular idea lol, advisor also needs sacking.

Richard Vaughan was 22 years old when he was
very last be called up for National Service - after
deferring to qualify as a chartered accountant

He was posted to the British Army of the Rhine
in Monchengladbach. At the time the Berlin Wall
was under construction “ I remember going into
Berlin and seeing all the building going on. I had
to go along the motorway and through the official
checkpoints “

In May 1963 , now promoted to full lieutenant he
returned home . The next day 16th May 1963 he was
officially demobbed , earning himself the title of
‘The Last National Serviceman ‘ ….

Wonderful

One of the neighbours' kids was a couple of years older than me and was called up. He was posted to Aden. He said it was a good experience, did things he would not normally have the opportunity to do.
