One of the neighbours' kids was a couple of years older than me and was called up. He was posted to Aden. He said it was a good experience, did things he would not normally have the opportunity to do.

You must be a fair age Foinavon, I knew somebody who served in Aden, had a great photograph book of his time. Enjoyed it too.

I gave it to an antique dealer, it wasn't worth anything but he liked it in his shop for people to browse.

Why not just make 100 hours of charity work a previso of taking any A Levels

The point of volunteer work is that it's done by volunteers.

It's nice to give something back, but I was too
busy enjoying myself in my youth.

To be born in the UK is like winning the lottery. There is no reason why we shouldn't ask kids to do some charity work. Make them learn about kindness and helping those less fortunate than themselves.

What would our generatio say, the one that has fceked things up if we were told every weekend for a year we would have to do charitable work……. The second word would be off!

This is the UK economy. Even in big corporations they have youngsters working for free ffs

Surely charity work interferes with that.

This has been mentioned a few times, but no. When you say "gifted" you mean the majority will pay ever rising taxes for the best part of their next 50 years. If the state does not provide healthcare, education, law and order, pension then you don't pay tax. Those 18yo as collective will pay (over their lifetimes ) a massive multiple on what they've received in education and healthcare. It's a bit like getting trained when you start a new job. They don't do it so they can gift you education. They do it so you can make them more money over time.
