What does she not want us to know ?
I'll answer my own question. She has either entered into a tax avoidance election with her husband - She could have made this tax avoidance election within two years of her marriage. (All perfectly legal if done properly) She has continued to claim that she was actually living in the ex council house after her marriage. Why would she want to hide either of the above from the people that pay her salary ? |

Deputy leader Angela Rayner said Zahawi's position is now "untenable" and that he should be dismissed from the Cabinet.
Ms Rayner said on Friday: "Rishi Sunak promised a government of integrity, professionalism, and accountability but instead he's propping up a motley crew of scandal-ridden ministers. "Nadhim Zahawi's story doesn't add up. The position of the man who was until recently in charge of the UK's tax system and who this prime minister appointed Conservative Party chair is now untenable. "It's time for Rishi Sunak to put his money where his mouth is and dismiss Nadhim Zahawi from his Cabinet." |

I reckon she has recently paid the correct amount of tax after taking expert advice.

I've not really followed this story, I'm not really someone for the twatter back holes. Has anyone queried the CT position on the apparent vacant property before it was disposed? |

The Labour mob, and foghorn Rayner herself determined that Zahawi was guilty of wrongdoing, even though his affairs were private. And needed to be cancelled. They aren't so hot on it when looking in a mirror it appears.

“It’s the same Rishi Sunak whose family avoided paying tax in this country before he put up taxes on everyone else. With his record – and after Liz Truss comprehensively beat him over the summer – it’s no wonder he is dodging scrutiny,” Rayner added.

Rayner and Zahawi -
There's a big difference between a politician not really understanding CGT law and pocketing £10k and a politician hiring an accounting firm to overly aggressively minimise their tax and pocketing £Xm while threatening to take people to court. |
By:
Having said that I think Rayner needs to come clean and admit her mistake.
By:
It's not really about Zahawi's own tax affairs, it's the usual hypocrisy. She claimed Sunak was dodging scrutiny but she's not so keen on exposing her own personal affairs now they are under the spotlight.

It's usually a good idea to avoid demanding things of other people that you wouldn't do yourself. It can end up biting you in the bum.

Having said that I think Rayner needs to come clean and admit her mistake. .................. It wasn't a mistake, she robbed a few quid as many people do. But many people will not be deputy leader of a Government. The yes butery from the Tory haters on this episode of a corrupt politician is unsurprising. |
By:
Wow. So many people apparently know exactly what happened. No need to disclose anything is there. Just direct the tax man to the betfair forum.
By:
Is there any real Evidence to suggest Rayner has common any offence?
Does anyone know her personal circumstances? Do they know gif sure she did not move back into the property or have her mail sent to the property or even elect it as her Principal Primary Residence? Why are the Po Po wasting time on this while people are being stabbed in our streets. What next shall we ask for plumbers and taxi’s drivers to publish their full tax returns and bank statements? |

Geoffrey Donaldson resigns
Did he have a Council House? |

Hardly surprising that a foghorn socialist who has made her living and reputation out of moaning about capitalists, creaming a fat profit off of trading social housing stock is attracting attention. It's rank hypocrisy, but standard fayre for champagne socialists. The icing on the cake is that it looks very likely to be fiddled, and as I say it would be very interesting to see how the CT was handled in the flipped property.

By:
Yup I heard Rayner had out £29 million in trust gif her and her kids from tax payer money on a dodgy PPE contract…… of no that’s right it was the Conservative Peer Michelle Mone
By:
Cider I agree with you Rayner is a hypocrite.
But I'm surprised you don't make remotely the same fuss of Tory corruption. If Rayner had sold a knighthood for £5m I bet you'd be foaming at the mouth |
By:
Angela Rayner has thrown down the gauntlet to prime minister Rishi Sunak, challenging him and two of his Conservative colleagues to publish their tax records if they want hers.
By:
She refused to disclose advice she received amid claims she may have avoided capital gains tax on the 2015 sale of her council house.
By:
The Labour deputy leader taunted her Tory critics, stressing that she has “done nothing wrong”, and saying: “If you show me yours, I will show you mine.”
By:
If Starmer was entirely serious about wanting to stamp out corruption in Parliament he could start by making it mandatory that all Labour MPs and their partners publish their tax returns.
Sunlight is a great disinfectant. |
By:
Naming Mr Sunak, the chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Tory deputy chair James Daly, Ms Rayner said: “If [they] all want to say ‘I’ll give you the last 15 years of my tax details’, I’m happy to disclose all of mine as well at the same time.”
By:
Wot you say Johnny boy and cider
Full disclosure? |
By:
I expect this type of behaviour from all these public life types, Norbert. Rayner has spent years pontificating about the personal tax affairs of other politicians, demanding disclosure. Now the boot is on the other foot, she's not so keen.

I work in finance and I also apply certain techniques to maximise funds, minimise liabilities in my personal life. Some of them would/could be considered grey areas. For example I didn't do salaried work for a while (gambling FT), so had nothing going through paye for over a year. I returned to salaried work and due to the unpaid year I was able to claim working tax credit for a year. In of itself I would actually expect any normal person to take that approach (use the system to their best advantage, without cheating the rules). But I'm not standing at the despatch box in the HoC, demanding heads on a spike when I'm aware I have gamed the system myself.
By:
In fact, the regulars will know I often pass workarounds on. If it's true that she lied about what her primary residency was (which seems overwhelmingly likely from what I have read), that's not a workaround, it's fraud.
By:
How T F did you manage to claim any benefits?
I could not claim benefits |
By:
WTC was based on the previous tax year's earnings. I was gambling FT so the previous year my earnings were nil. It was fifty odd quid a week for a year. Not life changing, but gift horse and all that!
By:
A property does not have to be your main home ,
to be classed as your primary residency |
By:
For capital gains tax it does , (unless you have made an appropriate election).
By:
By:
You don’t have to make an election and you don’t have to be living in the property
The rational for CGT property tax is that it is a business tax intended for people in the property business Not a situation such as Ms Rayner |

In what world would you use an address for a newborn that isn't where you're living? The neighbours stated that they didn't see her for years.
This is just what happens to normal people. A relationship develops, they decide to move in together but they can't live in two places obviously. There's no evidence the family lived in her old house, so they lived in the new partner's house, ie they settled in together as a family. I'm assuming she could not let the property or sell it due to the restrictions on purchasing discounted social housing. So waited it out and sold it when it was no longer her domestic home. As stated, it seems overwhelmingly likely that was the broad sequence of events. I've not looked into it, I don't actually know what the process is if you've purchased via RTB and then need to move out before the set waiting time has expired. I assume it needs to be handed back to the LA in some way? Or any capital gain does? |
By:
Cider, what is wrong with putting the biological father's address on a birth certificate?
The neighbours testimony is hearsay. I live between my wife's apartment and my old house 400m down the road, It's not that unusual. |
By:
How many newborns live in a different address to the new mum? don't worry, that's rhetorical as we already know the answer. There's two chances with the neighbours, they are all rabid Tories and making it up, or they are telling the truth. So yes it's overwhelmingly likely she wasn't living there.
By:
What is the definition of "primary residence" for tax form purposes?
By:
There is a rule for politicians and a rule for joe public and harriet. I still remember a Tory MP (loaded) who helped a friend to buy his council house in return for a percentage of the profit post selling after the lock-in period of purchase. This was not illegal, but not in the spirit of house ownership which was synonymous in the privatisation era of Mrs Thatcher.
Then again, a quick profit is never to be forgone or sneezed at. |
By:

The father or one of his family might have registered the birth. Other option with the neighbours... they were asked leading questions by someone from the right-wing press. As per normal. |

This is a very desperate and poor attempt by the Tories to try and dig some some dirt. If they want dirt they really should look closer to home and the donations they gladly receive.
