"The Kingdom of Ireland, which had existed as a personal union with England since 1541, was unrepresented in the original versions of the Union Jack.[50] However, the flag of the Protectorate from 1658 to 1660 was inescutcheoned with the arms of Ireland. These were removed at the Restoration, because Charles II disliked them.[51] "
Pity that ! Thats where it all went wrong ....hatred for the flag probably started then |

the flag is hated
it represents imperialism ...and the facists right wing mindset highly apparent in this thread |

Contrary to the authorised history propounded in English history books, of democracy and steam travel brought to the undeveloped world, the British empire brought little benefit to its subject nations. Instead they were relentlessly exploited and disrespected. It is estimated, for example, that 97% of the wealth generated in India during the imperial regime flowed to Britain, 3% to India.
In other cases their population was enslaved, their independence movements violently crushed; this is why the flag of the nation that oppressed them is hated around the globe. What of the nations that were not part of the British Empire? What reason have they to hate this flag? China, for example, was weakened and impoverished by British initiation of the ‘Opium Wars’, which disproportionately benefitted British trade. Britain used ‘soft power’ in addition to its usual military conquest model, to control world trade and influence. Why is the Union Jack hated more around the world than, say, The Stars and Stripes, even though the US controls a large proportion of the world for its commercial and strategic benefit now? Partly because the US is more cunning, diplomatic in how it exerts its power. Americans have learnt from the British Empire, partly too because of its associations in the world’s eyes: rightly or wrongly America is seen as the land of the free, opportunity for anyone around the world who can get there, and, ironically, a symbol of anti-imperialism. |

and they won’t be taking the Union Jack unless they want trouble |

However it has been hijacked by dark forces |

I must say I prefer the sparse and minimalist English flag myself.

|
By:
Of course some such as the French and Germans and the south of Ireland etc may not like the Union Jack , granted
But that’s because they behaved badly in the past and they want us to pay for beating them in past wars But that’s hardly our fault now is it |

I do think there is something very, very wrong that the 3 most contentious flags seem to be USA, UK and Israel. The 3 flags that seem to generate the most ill-will.
