Recent studies by N Zealand researchers however based on aerial photos and satellite images
seemed to show that most pacific islands over the last four decades are increasing in size ,
not sinking into the sea

This seems to go back to a single article in the Canberra Times, which in total read:

Threat to
islands
MALE, Maldives: A
gradual rise in average
sea level is threatening
to completely cover this
Indian Ocean nation of
1196 small islands with-
in the next 30 years, ac-
cording to authorities.
The Environmental
Affairs Director, Mr
Hussein Shihab, said an
estimated rise of 20 to 30
centimetres in the next
20 to 40 years could be
"catastrophic" for most
of the islands, which
were no more than a me-
tre above sea level.
The United Nations
Environment Project
was planning a study of
the problem.
But the end of the
Maldives and its
200,000 people could
come sooner if drinking
water supplies dry up by
1992, as predicted.

Obviously a 20 to 30 centimetre rise is not exactly 20 feet and furthermore the authorities in this case is some Maldives dude. If you've ever at least skipped through a climate report or study in your life, you will know that there are always multiple scenarios taken into account. Still the estimate given by that Maldives guy sounds a bit high and it would be interesting to know where he sourced it from. If you look at the very first IPCC90/92 report

https://www.ipcc.ch/site/assets/uploads/2018/05/ipcc_90_92_assessments_far_full_report.pdf

it shows a sea level rise of about 10 to 15 cm for the various scenarios from 1990 to 2020. We actually got that in satellite measurements.

Would it not be the case that islands such as the Maldives , at an average ht of about 4ft above sea level
and the highest points only 8 ft are so precarious it is a miracle that they haven’t fallen into the sea ?
Not so far anyway

Some of the latest predictions seem to suggest 2050 as the new timeline
( 80% ) of the islands under water - Why don’t we wait and see , a natural experiment
in the natural real world . It’s not too long to wait .
By:
lfc1971
When: 19 Jul 22 15:23
If something happens to the Maldives between now and 2050 so be it
Then at least we will know -  don’t change our current fossil fuel consumption etc
In fact ramp it up possibly and then we can see the results perhaps with ten or fifteen years ?

When: 19 Jul 22 15:24
I'd expect them to ship in some sand and increase the height of the islands instead of them just allowing them to sink. No big magic about it, but I can understand that the Maldives and its people would be a bit angry at all the extra costs and work that go along with that, thrust upon them because others emit greenhouse gases.

Some of the islands already had some artificial
protection with cages full of stones protecting
some parts.

Of course the reefs that protect many of the islands
will need help too.... Big job.
