Im asking you about Ghani

And the chart on the other thread clearly shows civilian and Afghan army deaths increase significantly as the American handed over responsibility of fighting the Taliban.
America faught and pretty much extinquished the Taliban. Had America continued to control the place the Taliban wouldnt have been as much as a threat as they became.

Most of the Afghan army simply got picked off as did the civilians.
The fighting which you refer to being undertaken was by a select 'Special forces' division of the army that were flown around the country, they are still in the mountains along with the PM

"The fighting which you refer to being undertaken was by a select 'Special forces' division of the army"

70,000 Afghans have died fighting the Talibs

45,000 casualties since 2014

it is an outrageous slur for Biden to blame them "giving up" for this debacle

Britain has lost 500 dead and virtually nobody since 2014

who do you think the Taliban are by the way?

do you think they are just an internal Afghan faction with little assistance from abroad?

How much air support did the Taliban have?
How many apaches, cruis missles etc, fighter jets and the like?

America can and di keep them in their hole, the weakness came when the regular Afghan army were given the responsibility of upholding the democracy which many took bribes to not bother....or Guiseppe do you know different?

the Afghans weren't ready to face the Talibs on their own

Biden seems to be the only person who didn't realise this

"the weakness came when the regular Afghan army were given the responsibility of upholding the democracy which many took bribes to not bother."

the weakness came when Biden withdrew all support, virtually overnight
By:
Giuseppe
When: 01 Sep 21 15:39
Biden didn't expect the Talibs to take over

it was a colossal misjudgement

he **** up

so why did Trump sign a deal promising the Taliban that the US would completely withdraw?
By:
dustybin
When: 01 Sep 21 15:42
Im not denying that the error came by Trump dismissing the Afghan government in doing a deal with terrorist Taliban
Nor that Biden didnt take the opportunity to rectify the withdrawal in a more improved manner.

But these are side issue that come with foriegn policy and history is littered with betrayal in one form or another.
What I ask the hand wringers is whether they see Ghani as upstanding and responsible and the epitome of the bravery of allied troops who fought a war that had little interest to them?
By:
Giuseppe
When: 01 Sep 21 15:49
Trump made that deal 18 months ago in the expectation that there would be peace talks

I don't think he would have completed the withdrawal if it looked like the Talibs were going to take over

Ahhh so Trump started the fuse but you think he would have stopped it before it exploded you mean?
Because Trump has never done anything wrong
By:

When: 01 Sep 21 15:52
Trump didn't include the Afghan government in his talks with the Taliban  - a week after the deal the Taliban resumed attacking the Afghans. Trump new perfectly well what would happen - he just didn't care - he only wanted a deal which got the Americans out without the Taliban attacking them.
By:
Giuseppe
When: 01 Sep 21 15:55
there are very few people who would have done what Biden did: continuing the withdrawal even when it became obvious Afghanistan was going to collapse within days
By:
Giuseppe
When: 01 Sep 21 15:56
"Trump new perfectly well what would happen"

Trump expected peace talks

he did not expect the Taliban to take over

he would have changed tack once it became obvious that was what would happen

nobody in NATO agreed with what Biden did

this was Biden's personal crusade

What about Ghani?
Was he right to cut and run and leave his country population to work it out after?

LMAO at you if you think Trump would have sat back and suffered this humiliation, and taken hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees to America

By:

When: 01 Sep 21 16:05
I dont think he would have taken the refugees, thats true.

What about Ghani?
And what about the allegations of rank and file army taking bribes, does that not undermine the whole basis of the democracy either?
By:

taken hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees to America

you're probably right on that point - would not have gone down well with the MAGA crazies
By:
Giuseppe
When: 01 Sep 21 16:08
the refugee issue alone would have been enough for him to send back the airforce
By:

When: 01 Sep 21 16:09
dusty as falwed as teh Afghan state is, there would be no civil war in Afghanistan without Pakistan support for the Talibs
By:
dustybin
When: 01 Sep 21 16:12
You could list a whole load of reasons why there wouldnt be a civil war, religion being so ingrained would likely be top.
But you wont address my questions will you?
By:
Giuseppe
When: 01 Sep 21 16:12
most Afghans just want a moderate decentralised government, with representatives from the various groups and factions

they weren't a million miles away from getting that

pakistan support for the taliban + support from opium growers + anger at drone strikes + anger at presence of foreign soldiers is what put wind in the Taliban sails

few Afghans would pick the taliban as their number one choice
By:
Giuseppe
When: 01 Sep 21 16:13
half the Taliban soldiers in the 1990s weren't even Afghans, they were Pakistanis and Arabs
By:
Giuseppe
When: 01 Sep 21 16:14
there is a certain absurdity to the Taliban now talking about the end of foreign power in Afganistan
By:
Giuseppe
When: 01 Sep 21 16:15
ironically Obama's policy of increased drone strikes played a role in their resurgence

If they werent fighting to destabalise democracy...they'd have ended up fighting arguing whos interpretation of nonsense religion was best....just like most of the middle east and what we used to do before the thirty years war

Im not asking you to take him out to dinner ffs
Im asking whether you feel his actions undermined the democractic ideals or not, as well as the intrinsic nature of those who took bribes or pretended to fight for better wages
