Local reporter estimates 70% turnout with 20% of electorate applied for postal vote (16113)
|
|
By:
Far too high a guesstimate at 70% turnout. 50% will be nearer.
|
|
By:
That old Postal Vote magic might well see Labour home here, particularly given the latest market moves.
It's amazing how many elderly immobile and invalided voters, unable to get out, are seemingly desperate to vote for a Free Palestine, and for their grand-daughters to have their changing rooms and toilet facilities full of Pretendy Women showing off their wedding tackle. |

Another POSTAL vote fiddle. What a disgrace.
One person, one vote... in person, in English |

Because nobody on the left has a job, they have ridiculous amounts of time on their hands to fix elections and preach their toxic bile
They should be made to get a real job ffs |

Polls wrong again ?

Is this what is generally known as a hollow victory
![]() Pretty sus number for Galloway. |
|
By:
Yes, the only poll pre count you can really rely on is the post voting exit poll, which do come in fairly bang on. When I went to bed, it was all 70% turn out as well. Barely 48%.

‘ The bit that convinces me tories will win is to ask who is likely to turn up at the polls to vote ?
White elderly leavers ‘ |

Labour price on the drift today again . It’s almost impossible to make a case as to why they might hold this seat ‘

What clueless numpty posted that?

By:
Tory vote apathetic, pretty sure the lockdown extension and Hancock's shenanigans cost them turning the seat over. Doesn't sound like the Tory machine was too bothered about it either.

Is this what is generally known as a hollow victory Grin
Labour will be very pleased - they'd have had a big majority were it not for the presence of their stalker |

ah good old cognitive dissonance |
|
By:
Opposition majority evaporated in a mid term by election. In a by election characterised by the left eating itself. If they are very pleased by that, just wait for how they feel when a great outcome comes along!

By:
ah good old cognitive dissonance
If you feel that the lockdown extension, and Hancock laughing in our faces had no impact on the Tory vote whatsoever, well, you're entitled to your opinion. Unlike you I posted my opinions on this before the result. |
|
By:
Such a small margin, I'd be in pretty much no doubt, the Hancock debacle has won this for Labour. Galloway nearly did the damage and got more votes than I thought he would.
|
|
By:
I didn't think the cat could get
that many votes and Labour win the seat. Some real odd goings on here Big inquest into how it happened. Obviously huge labour effort last 36 hours has pulled it off, but there's a few tories stayed home Shirley. |
|
By:
Must be Donny. It was a crazy last 24 hours on the campaign trail. Everyone thought the tories would win and Labour only had an outside chance but a huge on the day Labour effort turned things around. If it was known beforehand what Galloways total was going to be, I wouldn't have given Labour a hope. Hancock must surely have impacted the tory vote, probably leading to apathy rather than anything else. The extreme right wing parties also took more votes than the tories would have required to win.

Meanwhile in Raabshire
Cobham and Downside (Elmbridge) result: LDEM: 49.8% (+18.4) CON: 43.5% (-3.9) GRN: 3.0% (+3.0) LAB: 2.6% (-6.1) REFUK: 1.1% (+1.1) Liberal Democrat GAIN Conservative No UKIP (-12.5) as prev. I'm even thinking some daft tories must have voted for galloway to ensure Labour finished 3rd. |
|
By:
It's about a 3% swing lab to con
in batley. But huge churn, got to be. |
|
By:
No doubt at all about it Donny, tories voted for Galloway.
|
|
By:
Tories, or new tories who voted
Labour all their lives who couldnt vote for a gay candidate imposed by the kneeler? |
|
By:
Who knows their motivation but if they had turned up for the tories, they would have won.
|
|
By:
at the last general election there was an independent who got 6,400 votes and ukip got over 1600, its a very complicated picture in batley and spen.
|
|
By:
Great result for the Tories.
It means a challenge to Starmer's leadership is less likely. The Tories will be happy with that. |

the heavy industry man not standing should have benefited the tories. He was approached by yorkshire party and re **** to stand for them. |

A constituency that includes a significant community that doesn't share the values of the country they live in, and an incredibly toxic by election in that constituency. Purely a coincidence I'm sure.
|
|
By:
As well as the minority right wing parties total exceeding 323 the absence of the Green Party could also have helped Labour. Green Party supporters tend to be active voters and invariably previous Labour supporters. Without a candidate they would probably hold their noses and vote Labour rather than Galloway who they despise. They have been steadily increasing their share and probably would have got close to the Lib Dem figure, certainly more than 323.
