Like many on the extreme left Meacher lived a lifestyle that was far from what he preached.
It will be an interesting by election,Labour know they have the religion of peace vote as they block vote ( probably why the Labour Party want to import more of them ) but surely the working class will see that Labour don't represent them. UKIP are the party of the working class now,I think they will get upwards of 30% of the vote but that will still leave them short. |
By:
@ dotchiniteLabour will hold this seat easily |
By:
Labour 1/7 UKIP 4/1, can't see any value there at the moment

its a shame its not a by election in a tight tory seat, what with all this tax credit stuff going on at present

A Guardian article from 2001 about this fine Socialist Meacher, a true and proud example of Mrs Thatcher's 'property-owning democracy'.
Let's hope that in true Socialist Tony Benn style, his last will and testament ensures his assets and proceeds won't be passed on to the poor and homeless. . http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2001/jan/20/politics.labour |

UKIP will never win in Oldham West , if you had visited and seen the demographic you would why pretty sharply.

Market is up on the exchange.

I wonder is his family have to repay his tax credits payments next April after dying mid year ?

Labour selection on November 5th.
By:
The politics of the last few months will almost certainly mean an increase in Labour votes in Labour seats and an increase in Tory votes in Tory ones so even if Lab. win this easily, it won't mean much.
By:
the tory vote will collapse in oldham and deservedly so
By:
By:
knowledge is billy i live about 10 miles away and the tories will probably come third or fourth
By:
in the election micheal meacher increased his majority by about 6 thousand
By:
ukip could do well if tory vote collapses but Labour will hold the seat, BNP in recent years have done well
By:
By:
Tories have as much chance in Oldham as Labour have in my constituency of Wells. Zero chance of winning in both. At least the Tories got 8187 votes in Oldham West in May. Labour got 3780 here.
By:
it seems a bit unfair how it goes off seats in each area, all labour have to do is flood places with enough immigrants to ensure ukip never get in or the tories keep enough rich people happy and theyll keep all there seats as well
it should go off total votes not seperated for each area |
By:
Not just about wealth, more about tradition in many areas. Almost nobody votes Labour in the west country but they did elect a lot of Lib Dems, including Wells in 2009. Incomes are below the national average in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. Equally very few seem to vote Lib Dem in Yorkshire or Lancashire apart from a couple of exceptions.

Apart from the south west being a Liberal heartland, it's a different kind of poverty you see in the south west to areas where Labour are strong.
What I find in Labour areas is that there is always blame, resentment and a lack of responsibility you don't get that attitude in the south west. Whether that's because Labour have never been particularly strong in the area, or it's a trait I don't know. You can transplant a village from the south west to where I am in Wales, nearly identical in history, geography and make up yet the attitudes are far different when it comes down to politics. Which I find rather interesting. Any hope for Labour in the south west outside of the inner-city slums of Bristol has been removed by the rise of UKIP. Bradshaw in Exeter is surprisingly holding his own, although I expect him to be deselected and Labour to lose the seat if Corbyn makes it to the next election. |
By:
Labour in the north east constantly promotes the mantra of self pity. Any conversation locally then repeats the politicial mantra, often using the same cliches trotted out by the political and journalistic commentators.
By:
It won't matter. Given the demographic you will all be bowing to the east eventually.
